Barranco Through the Eyes of an Artist

Barranco is Lima´s smallest yet most lively district, with its bohemian charm and air of inspiration. It is an eclectic mesh of past and present, of grand colonial mansions and stylish, trendy restaurants, boutique shops and equally inviting bars. The district is home to many of Peru´s artists, writers, and musicians, and is the hub of creativity in Lima. Home to MATE, Mario Testino´s gallery, Museum of Contemporary Art MAC, and Pedro de Osma Museum. Let Barranco romance you!

Day 3
Puerto Maldonado, Peru
Reserva Amazonica Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Fly to Puerto Maldonado and travel to your lodge

In the morning you will fly to Puerto Maldonado where you will be collected and taken to the pier for your boat journey to the Reserva Amazonica Lodge.

After gathering with your Interpreter, choose from the different excursions available at the Lodge. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the Trail System, within the lodge’s natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. (Alternatives available: Native farm, Canopy and Anaconda Walk, and Ese'Eja Experience .)

We also recommend on the first night our Twilight River excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios River from the Inkaterra lodge. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and up to three different caiman species.

Day 4
Puerto Maldonado, Peru
Reserva Amazonica Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Amazon Rainforest Excursions

Rest in bed or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

This morning you may visit the Lake Sandoval excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. Return to the Inkaterra lodge for lunch.

After lunch, consider visit the remarkable Inkaterra Canopy Walkway. Ascending the first tower, 29 meters above the forest ground, you begin your encounter with the treetop realm. For more than a quarter of a mile, you will literally walk through the rainforest canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. During this hour-and-a-half expedition, be on the lookout for bright toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys and the three-toed sloth. If you wish you may extend your excursion and appreciate the sunset from one of the towers. The excursion finishes by returning to the lodge. Gather at The Eco Centre where the staff will make presentations of the excursions for the next day.

Overnight at the Reserva Amazonica Lodge.

Day 5
Urubamba, Peru
Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba Breakfast, Lunch

Arrive to Cusco and transfer to the Sacred Valley

Today you will fly to Cusco. On arrival to Cusco you will be welcomed by your host and taken to the Sacred Valley.

Visit Pisac Market

In the shadows of the mountains east of the Sacred Valley lies the traditional Andean town of Pisac. The town center is a thriving hub of commerce that still operates as it has since Incan times; with stalls filling the plaza selling everything under the Peruvian sun, and locals coming down from the highlands to exchange their produce for necessities as well as luxuries in a trade called “trueque”.

Hacienda Huayoccari, a beautiful ranch built in the Fifties by one of the most prestigious families in Cusco:landowners and art collectors. It is located 1.5 miles uphill from the main Sacred Valley road.

Huayoccari is a private home. It provides beautiful surroundings, amazing garden and views, antiques and folk art throughout and delicious food. The house is lived-in by its owners and receives guests to private luncheons by appointment only.

Overnight at the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba

Day 6
Urubamba, Peru
Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba Breakfast

Visit Chinchero, Maras & Moray

Start your experience in Chinchero, a small colonial town built upon Inca ruins high in the windswept plains of the Sacred Valley (12,430 ft.). It would be easy to spend your entire visit lost in the breathtaking views and architecture that hasn´t changed in centuries, but the real star of the show here is the market, which is the most authentic Andean market experience you will find, with locals making the long journey to exchange their handicrafts, food, and textiles for other necessities.

Next, descend to the fascinating salt mines of Maras, where seeing the locals mining the salt by hand is truly a unique experience. You will have the option to buy some salt of your own, supporting the local economy and making an excellent souvenir, before continuing on to the ruins at Moray. It has been suggested that these huge circular terraces have a cosmological meaning, however the Incas are thought to have used them as a kind of “crop laboratory”.

Overnight at the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba

Day 7
Aguas Calientes, Peru
Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel Breakfast, Dinner

Explore Machu Picchu

Meet your guide in the lobby of your hotel for a short walk to the bus station and a 30-minute bus ride up to Machu Picchu Citadel (elevation: 8,000 ft. – 2,432 m.a.s.l.)

Scratching the surface of the heavens from its place atop the grandest of mountaintop pedestals, it is easy to lose yourself in the mystique and grandeur of this enigmatic citadel. Soak in the energy and atmosphere of one of the most significant archeological sites on the planet while your guide helps you uncover the secrets behind key areas of interest such as the Intihuatana (the sun dial), Inti Punku (the sun gate), the Sacred Plaza, and the Temple of the Sun.

Allow approximately three hours for guided exploration, but feel free to stay and explore on your own as your schedule allows.

Overnight at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel.

Day 8
Cusco, Peru
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Breakfast

Hike Wayna Picchu

Take a short walk from your hotel, followed by a 30-minute bus ride to Machu Picchu citadel (8,000 ft. – 2,432 m above sea level).

This ascent is an absolute must-do for the adventurous! Trek for approximately 2 hours from the archeological site, reaching the summit of Wayna Picchu. There are two entrance opportunities dependent on availability: 7am or 10am. We will choose the 7am time for you unless requested otherwise.

Your switchback ascent brings you to the spectacular summit for an extremely privileged panoramic view of Machu Picchu Citadel and the jagged, larger-than-life Andes. This hike is as rewarding as it is demanding. Allow about two hours for the hike, and be prepared for a short section of narrow mountain-side stairs that are not for the faint of heart.

In the afternoon you will have your return train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy from where you will be taken back to Cusco and your hotel.

Overnight in the Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Hotel.

Day 9
Cusco, Peru
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Breakfast

Highlights of Cusco and San Blas

Explore the city that has gained world-wide fame and UNESCO World Heritage protection for its enthralling architecture and vibrant local culture. Spanish walls and roofs fuse harmoniously with Inca walls and foundations, suggesting a peaceful balance between the two cultures that starkly contrasts the true, conflict-ridden history of Cusco. Your guide will provide insight and anecdotes about the plazas, churches, and points of interest around the Main Square before continuing onto San Blas, the arts district of Cusco since Inca times and the nucleus for religious art and propaganda for the entire continent of South America during the Spanish Conquest.

Overnight in the Belmond Palacio Nazarenas Hotel

Day 10
Puno, Peru
Titilaka - Relais & Chateaux Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Travel to Lake Titicaca

Today you will have your flight to Juliaca, the airport closest to the majestic Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. On arrival at the airport you will be welcomed and taken to the hotel. Depending on your arrival flight you may enjoy one of the many activities a la carte that the hotel offers. One of these can be the Aymara Route Excursion

The Aymara Route excursion, spanning a whole day, entails growing acquainted with the geography, neighboring communities, nature, and privileged views of the Chucuito peninsula and Acora.

Delve into pre-Incan times in the legends and stories your guide will offer and learn about Lake Titicaca’s importance in the local worldview and means of subsistence. Grow closely acquainted with the unique interconnectedness of man and nature surviving to this day.

Be it by car, on a bike, or by foot, make your way through the paths meandering through open fields and pastures. Reaching the privileged views of natural lookouts, enjoy the lake’s extensive reach. As part of the excursion, guests will see the lodge’s neighboring communities and locals engaging in daily labors, birds in their varying ecosystems, archeological remains, and astonishing landscapes.

Along the way, stop and enjoy your specially prepared lunch in the company of the lake’s calm and majestic views.

Overnight at the Titilaka Hotel.

Day 11
Puno, Peru
Titilaka - Relais & Chateaux Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Island of Lake Titikaka Excursions

Explore the Uros floating islands and the Island of Taquile on this full-day trip, one of our most popular excursions.

Neither land, sky, or water, but rather at the intersection of the three, Totora, or junco reed roots, serve as unique building material for the floating islands of the Uros Titino communities of Lake Titicaca.

The Islands of Lake Titicaca excursion brings our guests close to the islands’ Uro-Aymara communities, providing a unique opportunity to grow personally acquainted with the men –skilled reed raftsmen–, and women, - expert weavers famous for their craft–, as well as the ancestral techniques used to keep their islands afloat, among other aspects of their remarkable heritage.

In Taquile, for example, guests will experience the Quechua imagination in the textile weavings unique to the area and recently included in UNESCO’s Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Enjoy lunch outdoors as you treat yourself to the grandeur of Puno’s deep blue skies mirrored across Lake Titicaca with views of Bolivia’s Cordillera Real, or Royal Mountain Range, in the background.

Overnight at the Titilaka Hotel.

Day 12
Puno, Peru
None Breakfast

Travel from Lake Titicaca to Lima

Today you will be taken to the airport in Juliaca for your flight to Lima. Depending on the flight times you may be able to enjoy another excursion en route to the airport. The en route excursion involves a visit to the mysterious, ancient site of Sillustani, home to the area’s best preserved chullpas, or funerary towers. Once a burial ground for the Pucara, Tiahuanaco, and Ccolla pre-Inca cultures, and then the Incas themselves, Sillustani’s chullpas offer an ideal opportunity to compare the contrasting pre-Columbian architectonic styles.

Symbolizing life and birth, these ancient tombs were used for chiefs and other dignitaries. Made of stones weighing up to six tons, the biggest tower took around 50 years to complete. Offering archaeology and history, in a stunning natural setting, Sillustani is an impressive site we strongly recommend you see.

From Juliaca Airport you will fly to Lima.

We loved our guide Gonzalo! We had private tours and he definitely took us on the path less traveled. The lodging at the Belmond properties was exceptional. Of Course the highlight was Machu Picchu and hiking the Sacred Valley. I would recommend checking itinerary closely before leaving the US because we wanted a change and there was no refund. All in all great trip!

Laurence was great! She even tried to catch us in a few of our stops to make sure everything was alright, although we were always out and about. We had 1 small hiccup which was no ones fault and ended up working out since some other things got moved around and it was very easy to contact Laurence and get it all worked out. If we go back to Peru I am sure PEC would be apart of the trip again!
