Florence (restricted mobility travellers) (5 days)

Day 1
Florence, Italy
Hotel Balestri None

Upon arrival into Florence airport you will be met by your local Guardian Angel and privately transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is yours at leisure.

Private transfers by luxury minivan with platform lift are included for all transport in this itinerary

Your hotel is fully accessible. There is a small step at the entrance but the hotel is able to mount a ramp which provides full accessibility.

Your river view room is fully accessible and has a walk-in shower

Day 2
Florence, Italy
Hotel Balestri Breakfast

Meet your guide this morning for a tour of Florence. Stroll through the city admiring some of the lovely piazzas, churches and palaces with your expert guide. Stop for a visit to the Galleria dell'Accademia to see the most famous of Michelangelo's work: David, a colossal 5.2m (17ft) nude of the biblical hero.

The Galleria dell'Accademia is wheelchair accessible. The Colosso Hall, Department of Musical Instruments, Prison Gallery, Tribune (which houses the David), Gipsoteca, Thirteenth Centuries and the bookshops are all fully accessible.

An equipped bathroom is located on the ground floor, next to the elevator. The visit to the upper floor is made possible by two wheelchair elevators: the first is about 70 x 80 cm, with a maximum capacity of 250 kg; the other measures instead about 65 x 75 cm - max 225kg.

You’ll also visit the Duomo, the famous landmark of Florence.

The Duomo features a wheelchair-accessible entrance on the right-hand side of the cathedral. Please note there is no elevator to the dome or the bell tower.

For visually impaired individuals, there is a tactile route which provides a deep and exciting experience – a different multisensory approach in accordance with new rules on the conservation of sculptural works, which do not allow tactile exploration of original works. Organised theme tours are available with a selection of works, organised as guided tactile visits for visually impaired individuals and those with other disabilities.

Finish your tour with a visit of the Church of San Lorenzo and the Medici chapels, where you see the colourful Chapel of Princes and the New Sacristy with Michelangelo's statues Dawn and Dusk and Night and Day.

The church is wheelchair accessible: access to the crypt is possible by ramp. Access to the upper floor is provided by elevator and from here there is access to the 'Chapel of the Princes' (housing works by Michelangelo) by a lifting platform. There is no easy access to the bathrooms

Day 3
Florence, Italy
Hotel Balestri Breakfast

Continue with your guide today to the world-famous Uffizi Gallery. The Medici family decided to house their art collection here and, in 1591, created Europe’s first modern museum. Its celebrated assembly of works includes paintings from the late Middle Ages through the early 18th century. Here you can admire such striking works as Botticelli’s 'Birth of Venus' and Leonardo da Vinci’s 'Annunciation'.

Entrance to the Uffizi Gallery is provided by access ramp. Inside, the elevators allow you to reach all gallery rooms, which are fully accessible. Restrooms are located on all floors and equipped for visitors with disabilities

Afterwards, continue on to the Church of Santa Croce, where many famous Florentines such as Michelangelo and Galileo are buried.

Wheelchair users will find two ramps next to the Church of Santa Croce: one is located next to the northern side of the building and the entrance to the church (Largo Bargellini), the other is in front of the exit of the Monumental Complex (Piazza Santa Croce)

Nearly all sections of Santa Croce are accessible to wheelchair users and those with moblilty difficulties have priority entrance without queuing

The church aisles are easily accessible but the transept, sacristy and Novices Chapel are separated from the rest of the church by steps, and therefore it is not possible to access these areas in wheelchairs

To reach the first cloister wheelchair users must exit the church from the main door, go through the first ramp located next to the porch, go around the building passing in front of the façade and re-enter using the exit door where there is the second ramp. From here it is possible to reach and visit the Parigi museum, Pazzi chapel, Museum of the Opera di Santa Croce and the second cloister. In front of the entrance to the gallery of 19th-century funeral monuments, there are no ramps and only steps

Toilets with facilities for wheelchair users are situated behind the desk in the first cloister

Day 4
Florence, Italy
San Gimignano, Italy
Hotel Balestri Breakfast

Today enjoy a full-day excursion with private vehicle and guide to explore the medieval town of San Gimignano and the surrounding Chianti countryside.

The town of San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and 14 of the original 72 towers still remain. Inside the town, you’ll visit the fortress where the Siena soldiers peered down on possible enemies from Florence and other towns.

There is a lovely view of the surrounding countryside that is accessible to disabled visitors. You’ll also visit the beautiful La Collegiata cathedral and its 12th-century frescoes, representing the Old and New Testaments. Along the narrow cobbled streets your guide will know where to go for the best local wild boar salami and Vernaccia white wine! Lunch is yours at leisure. Your guide can suggest the best local places to grab a bite.

The fortress and the Collegiata are accessible to visitors with limited mobility

Continue this afternoon into the heart of the Tuscan countryside for a panoramic tour with your guide and driver. Renowned for its art, wine, history and evocative landscapes, Tuscany is a region where the past and present merge in pleasant harmony. Hill-towns gaze across the countryside from high, many encircled by Etruscan walls and slender cypress trees. As you travel along winding roads, soak up the rich panorama comprising beautiful rolling hills, vineyards and olive groves. Admire the charming hamlets and farmhouses, as well as fortified villas and castles that symbolise the violence and inter-communal strife that tore Tuscany apart in the Middle Ages. Your tour includes a visit to a local vineyard with wine tasting.

Local wineries are selected according to accessibility and availability
