Could we seriously consider exploring Provence without going to Chateauneuf-du-Pape?
Known for being one of the best wine region in the world, Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a dream come true for wine lovers. The wine industry in Chateauneuf-du-Pape takes it roots back the XIVth century with Pope Jean the XII who lived in the Pope Palace in Avignon. Later on, a Pope vacation castle was built in the village, and Chateauneuf-du-Pape was born! Chateauneuf-du-Pape translates to the new Castle of the Pope! The so called “Chateauneuf” region has built its reputation on red wine, about 95% of the production is red. The tiny 5% remaining is made of white wines, a small and exclusive production very hard to find on the export market. Not an issue for us though, we know personally the top-rated winemakers in the village and you will have to opportunity to taste the very best Chateauneuf has to offer. The area of Chateauneuf-du-Pape covers 7,900 acres with just about 250 wineries. Our extensive network of partners among those wineries makes the impossible possible in Chateauneuf. Some of them are considered part of the world top 50, others among the top 30 wineries to visit in a lifetime. From small producers to the big ones, we have access to a whole range of wineries for you to visit. So let’s get going - you’ll drink, we will drive!
Your private guide will pick you up at your hotel for a full day touring and tasting in Chateauneuf du Pape.
We will start the day by visiting a winery considered as a rising star in the “appellation” (quality control label created over 90 years ago by local winemakers). You will be welcomed by the winemaker himself who will give you a tour of the estate. You will go behind the scene visiting the cellar where the wine maker will explain how the red and white wines are produced. Please keep in mind that rosé wine is not produced in Chateauneuf, at least it’s not acknowledged by the appellation. The visit will be followed by a wine tasting, you will sample some of their best “cuvées” in both red and white. If you would like we can even organize a tasting of the top wines produced in very small quantities… We will continue by going in the village, at the very heart of carefully restored 13th century cellar, to an authentic place with its atmosphere that invites you to a unique tasting experience. Peace and serenity reign in this warm and intimate place where subdued lighting along with Gregorian songs will enchant and accompany this rare moment. After a nice walk through the narrow street of the village, we will visit the remains of the castle that was built by the popes back to the XIVth century. For lunch, we will suggest a few places for fine foods in local bistros and cafés. An alternate option will be to enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch in a vineyard pairing food with Chateauneuf du Pape wines. Please let us know and we can make the arrangements. In the afternoon, time permitting, we will visit one or two wineries to deepen your knowledge of Chateauneuf wines.
