Your adventure in The Land of the Thunder Dragon begins almost immdeiatley after your arrival from Delhi. You will descend into the Paro valley. Located at an altitude of 7,000 feet, this beautiful valley is rich in culture, scenic beauty and legends. It is also one of the most fertile valleys in the Kingdom and produces a majority of the famous Bhutanese red rice. Connect further by road to Thimphu, with an en route stop at Buddha Point which affords spectacular views of the surrounding Thimphu valley. If you like, stop and offer prayers to the deity - the largest statue in the country - as you embark on the journey of a lifetime. Upon arrival in Thimphu, you will be escorted to your hotel - the luxurious Amankora.
Day 2
Delhi to Paro to Thimphu
Amankora Thimphu Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning you will visit the Bhutan Broadcasting Service from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Thimphu Valley. Next, we visit the Textile and Folk Heritage Museum to see the famous traditional Thangkha paintings, testimonies of the Bhutan's rich cultural heritage. Then, you will visit the beautiful Changangkha Lhakhang, an 12th century fortress-like temple and monastic school perched on a ridge above Thimphu. In the afternoon you will visit the Chorten Memorial built in memory of Bhutan's third king and the father of modern Bhutan, the Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck; it is popularly known as "the most visible religious landmark in Bhutan." Afterwards, visit Trashichhoedzong, the main secretariat building which houses all the ministers, The National Assembly Hall, the office of the King and the Throne Room.
Day 3
Punakha, Bhutan
Amankora Punakha Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
In the morning, you will drive to Punakha, a town that served as the capital of Bhutan until 1955 and is still the winter seat of Je Khnep (the chief abbot). The Punakha valley has splendid views of the distant Himalayas at Dochula Pass on the Thimphu Punakha road. En route you will visit Simtokha Dzong, a small, first of its kind, dzong that was built in 1629. Upon arrival in Paro, you will be escorted to the hotel where your base for exploration is the stunning Amankora Punakha luxury resort set in a sparking, verdant land. In the afternoon, visit the village of Talo, home of the Queen's and the valley's protective deity, lhakhang.
Day 4
Punakha, Bhutan
Amankora Punakha Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Embark on a visit to the Punakha Dzong. This dzong was built in 1637 to serve as the religious and administrative centre of the region and has played an important role in Bhutan's history. Damaged by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has been fully restored by the present King. Then, continue on to the regal Khamsum Yuelley Namgel Chorten, which was built to remove negative forces and promote peace, stability and harmony in the changing world. The Chorten dominates the upper Punakha Valley with views across the Mo Chhu River and up towards the mountainous peaks of Gasa and beyond. Next, on to the Chimi Lhakhang, a Buddhist monastery standing on a round hillock and was built in 1499. The site was blessed by the ‘Divine Madman', the maverick saint Drukpa Kinley (1455-1529) who built a chorten on the site. He was known as the "Mad Saint" or "Divine Madman" for his unorthodox ways of teaching Buddhism by his singing, humour and outrageous behaviour.
Day 5
Paro Valley
Amankora Paro Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning you will drive to Paro, which encapsulates within itself a rich culture, scenic beauty, and hundreds of myths and legends. It is home to many of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries, the National Museum, and the country's only airport. Upon arrival in Paro, proceed to your home for the next 3 nights - Amankora Paro, nestled amongst glistening conifers in a 24-suite pine forest retreat. Later in the afternoon, enjoy a stroll through the local village and get a glimpse of rural Bhutanese life.
Day 6
Paro Valley
Amankora Paro Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Our first stop for the day is Ta Dzong, the one-time watch tower built to defend Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valley wars of the 17th century. Since 1967, Ta Dzong is now serving as the country's National Museum. It holds a fascinating collection of art, relics, religious thangkha paintings and Bhutan's exquisite postage stamps. Next, you will visit the Kyichu temple, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of the Kingdom dating back to 7th century. From there, you will visit Kila Goemba, the serene home of Buddhist nuns who have dedicated their life for spiritual fulfillment and leading undisturbed life of religious studies, prayer and meditation. The goemba is nestled in a craggy patch on mountain side below the Chelela pass and perched precariously along the rock face. From Chelela pass, the lhakhang is about an hour walk amidst magnificent wooded area.
Day 7
Paro Valley
Amankora Paro Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning you will visit Taktsang Lhakhang also known as Tiger's Nest, one of Bhutan's most famous monasteries. It clings to a vertical granite cliff 2,000 ft above Paro valley's floor. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery and hence it is called ‘Tiger's Nest'. To get there, you must hike up where you will most likely be sharing the path with devout pilgrims coming to worship. Prayer flags flutter in the wind and there is a waterfall and hermit's house near the main temple. The monastery has suffered several fires over the years, but has been faithfully restored each time. Enjoy an unscheduled evening at leisure with an option to explore the local markets once again.
Day 8
Delhi, India
N/a None
Your trip to this mystical land comes to an end as you fly back to Delhi, India. Upon arrival in Delhi, we proceed to a hotel where a room has been reserved for us until departure. Later tonight, return to the airport for the flight home.

Tour Features

  • Wildlife & Nature

"When it comes to lovely countries," Micato's old friend Seamus O'Banion once wrote, "Bhutan is a country more unlike any other country than any other country." To wit: It has wisely and successfully avoided the mass tourism that would erode its unique, vibrantly intact culture.

About Us

The only nine-time #1 winner of Travel + Leisure's World's Best Safari Outfitter award, family-owned Micato Safaris has been offering luxurious and personalized safaris to sophisticated travelers since 1966, venturing to Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Victoria Falls. In addition, Conde Nast Traveler has honored Micato and its nonprofit, AmericaShare, an unprecedented five times with its prestigious World Savers Award, recognizing such programs as the Micato One for One Commitment, ensuring that for every safari sold, Micato sends an African child to school.

Insider Tip

Africa is not unusually hot and is actually perfect as a year-round destination. East Africa is on the equator and at altitude, and South Africa is on the Tropic of Capricorn, so it's even cooler.

We chose carefully to find the best African Tour company that we believed would provide the best, stand behind its product and not offer lame excuses. Micato proved its excellence in every way, including acknowledging an error and standing behind its well earned reputation to make it right. Not all would do that, as we all know from experience. M did a remarkable job and worth the money.. Best personnel and logistics around. So.......the best, and proud to tell the world.

Micto has a reputation for extraordinary service which is well deserved. We chose the Grand Safari and secretly thought that it really wouldn't fully justify the name or the price but were pleasantly proved wrong. We were greeted by Jane and Felix Pinto, company founders at the start and end of the trip who made us feel a part of their family. Every effort was made to make the experience comfortable, luxurious and magical and all of our needs were anticipated. They even showed up with a birthday gift for me when I had forgotten all about the date! The guides are charming and knowledgable about animals, history, culture, politics - you name it. The drivers were magicians at anticipating animal behavior and getting us to just the right spot to see just the right animals. We've since met other Micto travelers whom we were pleased to note have had similar experiences. Don't go to Africa with anyone but Micato.

Everything from the moment we were picked up in Capetown, to the end of our trip in Nairobi was top rate. The guides and drivers were exceptional, the hotels were fabulous. We really felt spoiled by the way we were treated. The only downside had to do with sending our bags home that we weren't going to use on the 18 day safari - one of the five bags never made it out of South Africa. DHL has no idea what happened to it.

We recently completed our Micato Safari. We spent 13 days in Kenya and Tanzania. In short, the trip was perfect. Starting with our Nairobi Airport greeting by Micato (Salma). She raced us through customs where we were picked up in a Micato Land Cruiser and delivered to our hotel where we were met by Micato Concierge Virginia. She seamlessly checked us into our Nairobi hotel. Then we met Phillip, our Safari Guide. Phillip was top notch and made sure we had a fantastic time including a delicious lunch at the home of the Pintos (founders and owners of Micato). there is an incredible amount of detail that goes into the planning and execution of a African Safari. Phillip made it look easy (although we know he was working hard to make our experience perfect). If we decide to go back to Africa (or visit India), there is only one Safari company we'd use and that's Micato.

This company is absolutely outstanding. They thought or and took care of every detail. Once we landed in Kenya they took over with a team of advisors, guides and helpers. Tour was well planned and the so-called camp sites (really hotel-like) were top of the line. The people that work for Micato are incredibly nice, friendly and helpful. The tours guides are very knowledgeable. All speak excellent English. One detail to remember is that you travel with other people and they can enhance or be a negative. We were lucky we had a good group, but I could see how it would be a downer to travel with other types of people.

Micato is a top notch tour operator. This was our second trip with them but the first where we took our family along with us. Managing seven people, three of whom were children, requires patience and perseverance. From the greeters at the various airports, to Sue who led us at Victoria Falls, and Hein who traveled with us throughout, our trip was wonderful. One suggestion would be to train the bartenders in the various camps how to make drinks and to have a more upgraded and better selection of wines and liquors. Other than that, not much to complain about. We were happy campers!

There are vacations that inform and open the mind and even those that give joy. But the Micato Safari that we experienced touched the soul. It was a unique and once in a life time experience to observe the wildlife of Africa and we shall probably never experience anything like it again. What raised the experience to a much higher level was first the attention given to us by the Micato staff. Never have we experience such dedicated individuals to providing an incredible experience. The staff expressed how much they enjoyed their jobs and this was reflected time and time again in the service they provided. There are no words to describe them. It was also the quality of lodging each night and the service provided that helped after a full day of bouncing on paths that were roads in name only. Mr. and Mrs. Pinto, owners of Micato, were such delightful people. Many more words of praise could be said but the word count is limited.
