Board our short flight to Apia and lose a day as you cross the International Date Line. Upon arrival, set out for a full-day tour of Samoa’s capital and largest city. Begin at Mulinu’u, the old ceremonial capital, which includes the sacred burial grounds of the chiefly families of Samoa, Parliament House, and a historic observatory. Continue to Moamoa Theological College to view a beautiful old church with exquisite stained-glass windows. Your last stop is Robert Louis Stevenson’s former home, now a museum filled with memorabilia and artifacts from the author’s life in Samoa. Take a stroll through the surrounding Vailima Botanical Garden, keeping an eye out for Samoan whistlers, Samoan fantails, red-vented bulbuls, cardinal honeyeaters, and buff-banded rails. Check in to the Sheraton Samoa Aggie Grey’s Hotel & Bungalows for dinner and overnight.

This morning, board a local ferry to the nearby island of Savai’i. Visit the Salelologa Market where locals shop for everything from fresh produce to household goods. After a chance to browse, head to the Alofaaga Blowholes, where powerful waves propel seawater hundreds of feet into the air. Then try your hand making traditional siapo, or tapa–a cloth made from paper mulberry bark and decorated with natural dyes. After a busy morning, take a refreshing dip in the deep freshwater pool below the spectacular Afu Aau Waterfall. Enjoy lunch at Savaiian Hotel with the afternoon at leisure to wander the lovely grounds and cool off in the oceanfront swimming pool. This evening, check in to Le Lagoto Resort & Spa for dinner and overnight.

Today, visit the Saleaula Lava Fields, where two major eruptions between 1905 – 1911 engulfed several villages in molten lava. Continue to the Satoalepai Wetland, where you will have a chance to swim with green turtles that are being raised for eventual release into the wild. Return to the Savaiian Hotel for lunch, with the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

Enjoy a morning tour of Suva before transferring to the airport for your flight to Tonga. Upon arrival, check in to the Scenic Hotel Tonga. Ideally set on a stretch of white-sand beach and surrounded by lush gardens of native flora, enjoy lunch in this natural paradise while you’re welcomed with traditional Tongan music and dance. This afternoon, take a tour of the island including the elegant Royal Palace; the Talamahu Market, filled with fresh produce and local handicrafts; Anahulu Cave; and the terraced tombs of the Tongan kings.

After breakfast, take one of the world’s shortest commercial flights—a quick seven minutes—to the island of Eua. A hike takes you to a viewpoint looking over the island’s spectacular cliffs, caves, and sinkholes. Seabirds are abundant along the coast and, in the forested interior, keep an eye out for the rare red-breasted musk parrot.

Board our morning flight to Vava’u and, upon arrival, transfer to the ‘Ene’io Botanical Gardens. Take a stroll with the director and learn about local folklore and the uses of various plants. Your tour concludes with a demonstration of mat weaving, tapa cloth production, and a kava ceremony. Enjoy lunch in these beautiful surroundings while you are treated to a performance of song and dance by local school children. Check in to the Tongan Beach Resort for dinner and overnight.
