Fly over the Rotorua lake region and also Mt Tarawera before heading 52kms east off the Bay of Plenty coastline to White Island, New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. The full Maori name for the island is 'Te Puia o Whakaari' meaning literally: 'The Dramatic Volcano’ and was named 'White Island' by Captain Cook on October 1, 1769 because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam. Words cannot express the experience of walking on the active crater floor of this unique lunar landscape. Active volcanic vents, a steaming Crater Lake, bubbling hot streams and desolate mining ruins combine to create a surreal experience. Following this unique geothermal adventure, we land at a local Marae where you will experience a traditional Powhiri (welcoming ceremony). This ancient style of welcoming will be explained by your guide on arrival to the village. Once the welcoming ritual has been completed you will be considered “Tangata Whenua” or people of the land. After the ceremony you are welcome to explore the Marae and beautiful river surroundings at leisure. Enjoy a traditional Hangi Lunch on the shores of Lake Rotoiti and take part in arts and crafts with local friends and Whanau, or simply listen to stories and learn about the rich history of this tribe and the area.
