About Kandy - Kandy – the Sinhala word meaning hill, was an impenetrable fortress for the Sinhala monarchs buried deep in jungle with torrential rivers, rock faces all rigged by nature to keep this Cockpit of Lanka in rarefied isolation. It withstood the onslaught of three colonial powers long after the rest of the island had been ransacked for cinnamon, sapphires and other spoils. The Kandyans are a proud race, possessive about culinary finesse; incredible hosts, which is why many hotels are still family owned. Travelling up along hairpin bends you soon realize why the Brits needed to build trains to ease the strain!

About The Tea Country - The eponymous English cuppa might have been somewhat stronger if not for the 1865 coffee blight. Old Ceylon’s up-country plantations were devastated – but not so the spirits of the pioneering planters. They threw in a crop of tea and never looked back. Hatton literally screams with the successes of these quick-witted Brits who made Ceylon Tea a household name. Enigmatically surrounded by a tapestry of tea fields, reservoirs and sloping hills, Hatton is living proof that this major industry not only stood the test of time, but also made the countryside a stunning place in the process.

The air is clean, fresh and ripe for peddling or stepping out in style. Admire workers in the tea fields and sample the fruits of their labours on an informative tea factory tour. Punt on a reservoir, have a dip in an ice-cold pool or savour High Tea atop manicured lawns before a languid game of croquet. At night, slumber under plush duvets and be awakened by a morning cup of bed tea or even earlier by the thought of an adrenaline-fuelled hike up nearby Adam’s Peak.

General description:

The history of the iconic Galle Fort dates back many centuries and was a well-known natural harbor used by Persian, Arab, Greek and Roman traders, among others long before it was discovered by the Portuguese in the 1500s. Through historic trading, European colonization, the tsunami in 2004 and the tourism boom in the island in more recent times, the landscape of Galle Fort has changed significantly. Commonly referred to as the Dutch Fort, after those who fortified it after it was built by the Portuguese, the fort has 14 bastions and granite and coral ramparts, fitted with cannons to protect Galle from seafarers. At present, Galle Fort is a melting pot of cultures and communities and a favored destination of many.

Experience description:

Go on a guided walk with your host as he explains the history of the fort that has attracted traders and travelers from around the world. Walk through the cobblestoned pathways flanked by antique shops, heritage houses and restaurants offering everything from Moroccan to crepes, while your host engages you in historical tales of the evolution of these ramparts and the battles that took place in the name of the fort. Take a look at the architectural and archaeological sites that have given Galle Fort its UNESCO World Heritage status. Your host is from Galle and is certain to amuse you with stories and tales from the area.
