Bear viewing on the Katmai Coast

Today you’ll experience a unique trip to the Katmai Coast in pursuit of Alaska’s brown bears.

Enjoy a scenic 1-hour wheel plane flight across Cook Inlet past Mount Augustine Volcano. Follow the lush green coastline of the Alaska Peninsula, which is capped with active volcanoes and massive glaciers terminating in iceberg filled lakes. This is the habitat of one of the largest natural concentrations of brown bears in the world. In the course of the bear viewing trip, it is reasonable to assume you may walk a total distance of one to one and one-half miles. The walking is at a relatively slow pace so as not to disturb the bears. The grassy terrain is natural and fairly level with only wildlife trails.

With your guide you’ll walk along the same trails as the bears do, sit on the same river banks as they do and observe them as they go about their day to day Life. There are no barriers, fences or platforms separating you from the bears and other wildlife. During August, you can expect to see bears fishing and feeding on spawning salmon.

After about 3-hours of bear-viewing & exploring, you’ll fly back to Homer on a slightly different route for different sights, arriving at the lodge at 3:30pm-4:00pm. In the late afternoon you can pursue lodge based guided activities and or just relax with a book in hand enjoying the captivating views.

See black and brown bears fishing for salmon or cavorting with their cubs. Enjoy a casual lunch at Redoubt Bay Lodge before flying back to Tutka Bay Lodge.

Arrive back at Tutka Bay Lodge with time in the mid-afternoon to pursue an activity and or settle in for the day.

Excellent service

Upon arriving in Klamath Falls, our daughter became pretty ill and was not able to whitewater raft on the first day of our vacation. I called the customer service number and explained the situation and asked if it would be possible to change to another day. The young woman I spoke with was SO kind and helpful. She took all the information, called the tour company and called me back in a very short period of time. She was able to schedule the tour for later in the week and by that day, we were ALL able to go on the whitewater rafting excursion. Crater Lake National park was spectacular and I would highly recommend this service and location!

Mindy organized a wonderful vacation for our family. We enjoyed spending two full days with an absolutely outstanding tour guide at Yellowstone followed by two more half days with the same guide at the Grand Tetons. He gave us an appreciation for the spectacular surroundings and led us to see over 25 species of wildlife. We also had a wonderful time attending a rodeo and biking. Mindy even was able to add a white water rafting trip down the Snake River at the last minute. We are so looking forward to planning our next trip at other national parks with this very knowledgeable and committed organization. Thank you so much!

Grand Canyon, Bryce, and Zion National Parks

By: Jim

The trip exceeded my expectations. The private tours of the parks were interesting and the tour guides were very kid-friendly. We had a free morning in Page, Arizona and added a trip to Lower Antelope Canyon. This is a "must see" and was the favorite part of our trip for my three children. This slot canyon is 9 miles from Page and is the most visited slot canyon in America. We used Ken's tours and were accommodated within an hour without reservations. One day tours are adequate for the South rim of the Grand Canyon and Bryce. However, my family could have spent several days in Zion. The beauty of all three parks cannot be captured on film. The daily hikes were beautiful and totaled 15 miles spread out over 4 days.

It was a delightful experience! We especially enjoyed our guide, Slim Woodruff. She not only enabled us to experience the Canyon but also shared well the history of the Kolb brothers and others in the development of “tourism” so that others could visit and explore the Canyon. When questioned, Slim was knowledgeable of all the support services available to those who live in the park and to those who visit. Our helicopter ride was exciting and definitely memorable also!
