Klondike Gold; An Aurora Adventure (5 days)

Day 1
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Canada
Sundog Retreat Dinner

Upon your arrival in Whitehorse you’ll be met with a warm Yukon welcome from your private guide. After a short drive (with the option to stop for snacks!) you’ll arrive at Sundog Retreat, your home for the next few days. Nestled on over 160 acres of Yukon land, there’s endless room to explore. After a hearty supper, grab your camera and head outside! You’ll meet with a professional photographer experienced in capturing the magnificent northern lights. Once your lesson is complete, snap impressive shots of your own or simply marvel at the lights as they dance across the sky. Accommodations are at Sundog Retreat in a Cabin.

Day 2
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Canada
Sundog Retreat Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

This morning you’ll enjoy a jaw-dropping flightseeing tour high above the Chilkoot Pass and nearby Icefields. Travel back in time as you learn about the historic gold rush, which propelled this region into the spotlight. In the afternoon, visit the Takhini Hot Springs. These mineral pools offer both a hot and cold pool, and contain zero sulphurous odor common in most hot springs. After your relaxing soak you’ll head back to Sundog Retreat for dinner and another evening of aurora viewing. Accommodations are at Sundog Retreat in a Cabin.

Day 3
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Canada
Sundog Retreat Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

This morning you’ll venture ‘downtown’ to the city of Whitehorse for a tour like no other. Spot the historical Sternwheeler SS Klondike, log skyscraper and wander down the quaint main street dotted with remnants of the past. In the afternoon, meet the locals at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. Fierce, furry and friendly, the animals living in Canada’s far north are downright fascinating. Get up close and personal with Canada’s wildlife as you observe elk, muskox, caribou, mountain goats, lynx, arctic fox and more. Accommodations are at Sundog Retreat in a Cabin.

Day 4
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Canada
Sundog Retreat Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Snack

Enjoy a peaceful morning exploring Sundog’s ample property, or relaxing in the hot tub. Come afternoon you’ll try your hand at a quintessential northern activity: dogsledding! What was once a primary method of transportation in Canada has now become a popular winter sport. Mush your very own team of sled dogs across the snowy tundra. After an exciting afternoon and hearty supper, enjoy your final evening under the aurora and take in the northern lights. Accommodations are at Sundog Retreat in a Cabin.

Day 5
Whitehorse, Yukon Territory Canada
None Breakfast

After breakfast it’s time to say goodbye. A short transfer will deliver you back to Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport, where you’ll catch your flight(s) home. Safe travels!

The Klondike Gold Rush saw over 100,000 prospectors rush to the small Yukon region, hoping to strike it rich deep in the mines or along the riverbeds. The aurora borealis lit up the sky nightly and provided a much-needed distraction to the men after a hard day’s work. The frenzy of the gold rush eventually died down and most prospectors left the Yukon. Left behind was a rich and exciting history, some flecks of gold (if you can find them!) and the ever-present northern lights.

Trip to Canada

Our experience with Entree Canada was excellent. All of the drivers and cars were very good and the recommended guides were knowledgeable and helpful. They scheduled us on Via Rail Canada from Montreal to Quebec City and the attendants were extremely nice and helpful as were the lady porters. One of our traveling companions lost a hearing aid while on the train and didn't discover it until we reached the hotel, Auberge St. Antoine, who called immediately. The train had departed. Miraculously, the next day Via Rail brought the hearing aid to the hotel. That is really good service. Use Entree Canada if you travel to Canada.
