Known as the ‘Duero’ to the Spanish, the Douro River flows westward from Spain into Portugal, where it has sculpted one of the most dramatically beautiful landscapes in all of Europe. Terraced vineyards tumble down to the water as it cuts its serpentine course to the Atlantic. Around every bend sits a graceful riverside village. High above, noble hilltop estates known as quintas produce one of the planet’s most celebrated beverages; the dessert wine known as Vinho do Porto, or simply ‘port’ to the English-speaking world. Far from the energetic bustle of the coastal cities, this is a region of ancient stone mills, communal baking ovens and peaceful bird sanctuaries. Long appreciated as a wine producer but overlooked as a destination, the Douro Valley, now graced with a sophisticated cuisine and fine hotels to complement its natural bounty, begs to be discovered.
