Day 1
Arrive Amritsar
Hyatt Amritsar - 2 Nights None
On arrival in Amritsar, you will be met and taken to your hotel.

This evening, proceed to the Golden Temple to see the Palki Sahib ceremony. To the accompaniment of drums and hymns that fill the air, a gold and silver gilded palanquin (palki), decorated with silk brocades, is prepared by the devotees to carry the Guru Granth Sahib (the Holy Book) from the main shrine in Hari Mandir to Darshani Deorhi (gateway leading to the inner sanctum). Performed every evening, several devout followers and visitors participate in the ceremony, which offers each individual at least a few seconds to help carry the palanquin.

The Holy Book rests for a few hours in the inner chambers until the commencement of the early morning Palki Sahib Ceremony for bringing the Guru Granth Sahib from the Akal Takht (inner chambers) to the main shrine in Hari Mandir.
Day 2
Hyatt Amritsar Breakfast
Today, you will visit the Golden Temple, Jallianwala Bagh and the market. Also known as the Hari Mandir, the Golden Temple is the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. A blend of Hindu and Muslim styles, the temple is topped with a golden dome, said to be gilded with 220 pounds of pure gold. Just a 5 minute walk from the temple is the park known as Jallianwala Bagh, which commemorates the 2,000 Indians who were killed or wounded here by the British in the 1919 massacre. This event is considered one of the most important in India's struggle for independence. From here you will be taken for a stroll through Amritsar's market. You will also visit the Ram Bagh Gardens and the summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Experience a sunset visit to Wagah. Every day at sunset the border guards of India and Pakistan assemble for the border closing ceremony. Each army parades in an immaculately turned out display of synchronized marching and bellowed military commands, each side doing its best to out-do the other with its shouting and marching. The ritual ends as the sun goes down, the flag of each country is lowered and the gates are slammed shut.
Day 3
To McLeod Ganj National Park
Pride Surya Resort - 1 Night Breakfast
Drive from Amritsar to McLeod Ganj (Dharamsala), a distance of 136 miles and journey time of approximately 7 hours.

This afternoon, enjoy a tour of McLeod Ganj. The main city center is a charming Tibetan settlement with bustling bazaars that sell carpets, handicrafts and delicious Tibetan food. The Dalai Lama resides in McLeod Ganj and this afternoon's tour begins by visiting His Holiness the Dalai Lama's monastery, Tsuglag Khang. From the outside, the monastery resembles a simple brick and mortar building but inside it is beautifully carved and contains paintings, murals and other artefacts that give a great insight into Buddhist life. Your tour also includes a visit to the Norbulingka Institute, which is dedicated to the preservation of Tibetan culture, particularly the traditional Tibetan arts of woodcarving, thangka painting, goldsmithing and embroidery. Proceed to the handicrafts center and a local family house to see the regional gaddi dress.
Day 4
To Palampur
Taragarh Palace - 1 Night Breakfast, Dinner
Drive from McLeod Ganj to Palampur, a distance of 28 miles and a journey time of approximately 1.5 hours (excluding stops).

En route, visit Sobha Singh Art Gallery (the master of modern Sikh art), Andretta Terracotta Museum and the rock-cut temples at Masroor, dated by art historians to the sixth to eighth centuries AD.
Day 5
To Pragpur
The Judge's Court - 2 Nights Breakfast, Dinner
Drive from Palampur to Baijnath, a distance of 11 miles and a journey time of approximately 35 minutes.

Enjoy a Kangra Mountain Railway from Baijnath to Nagrota. The Kangra Mountain Railway, also known as the Kangra Toy Train, covers a distance of 100 miles across beautiful sub-Himalayan terrain and Joginder Nagar, a valley known for its natural beauty and ancient Hindu shrines. First commissioned in 1929, this incredible feat of engineering passes many small stations, travels across 971 specially designed bridges and through two tunnels. At its highest point of 4,235 feet, the journey provides beautiful views of the Dhauladhar mountain range and the ruins of Kangra fort.

Drive from Nagrota to Pragpur, stopping en route at Kangra fort. The journey will take approximately 5.5 hours, excluding stops.

Located 12 miles from Dharamsala, Kangra fort holds significant historical importance to the Kangra district. Built by the royal Rajput family, which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, it is thought to be the oldest fort in India.
Day 6
The Judge's Court Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7
Bhimbetka caves - Shimla
The Oberoi Cecil - 2 Nights Breakfast
You will be driven from Pragpur to Shimla, a distance of about 150 miles and a journey time of approximately 6 to 7 hours. En-route stop at shops selling locally produced fruit wines.
Day 8
The Oberoi Cecil Breakfast
Today, proceed on a full day tour of Shimla. The tour includes Jakhu temple, the Viceregal Lodge, Himachal State Museum and the Gaiety Theatre. Dedicated to the monkey god Hanuman, Jakhu temple sits at an altitude of 8,055 feet and has excellent views over Shimla, the surrounding valleys and the snow-capped peaks to the north. The Viceregal Lodge, finished in 1888, was formerly the residence of the British viceroy Lord Dufferin and the summer seat of British government in India until the 1940s. It is home to magnificently kept lawns and botanical gardens. Proceed to the Himachal State Museum, which is housed in a Victorian mansion and contains an impressive collection of Himachali, Rajasthani and Punjabi miniatures, as well as colorful traditional costumes and jewellery, delicate stone and wood carvings, and interesting photographs of Himachal temples. The final visit is to the restored gothic Gaiety Theatre, which was once visited by Rudyard Kipling.

Later in the day, enjoy some free time to stroll along the Mall and the Ridge
Day 9
To Chandigarh via Toy Train
Taj Chandigarh - 2 Nights Breakfast
Today enjoy a Toy Train journey from Shimla to Solan. The narrow gauge railway from Kalka to Shimla, completed in 1903, is considered one of the finest engineering feats in India. A journey along this track on the 'toy train' is one of the best ways to experience the beautiful Himalayan scenery that the Shimla area is famous for.

Continue on the road to Chandigarh, a distance of 75 miles and journey time of approximately 3.5 hours.
Day 10
Taj Chandigarh Breakfast
Today, enjoy a full day tour of Chandigarh. the agency used too many different companies and out sourced the trips and guides to different areas that it was difficult to find who was responsible and who to contact in case of an issue. People will be better served if the same company was consistently used. Also if they have booked a room in a hotel, not to book the lowest category of the room in the hotel but give guests an option to book a room with a balcony or overlooking the water

Never again

I have a major issue with Cox and Kings as a “luxury supplier”.There is more to the term than booking expensive hotels and tours. A well planned, informative experience that ensures client satisfaction must occur. Communication with Cox and Kings was almost nil. There was virtually no information provided to us once they had payment. The final delivery of documents was nothing more than a copy of the original booking marked final. These documents (such as they were) came late. Cox and Kings excuse was they “were waiting on ‘final’ confirmation from suppliers”. Based on the start of our trip, it’s not clear that they were communicating with them any better than they were talking to us.  They failed to tell us that the in country flight could only accomodate 25lbs of luggage, great fun repacking. They screwed up the excursions planned at our first stop and we missed one. Another listed tour stop did not happen and several were not as described. GO ELSEWHERE!

Our travel agent used Cox and Kings for our group's three-day stay in Prague. The hotel, Hotel Paris, was wonderful and the tour guide was exceptional.  We had a wonderful time while we were there.  The only disappointment was the Hungarian folk dancing show/dinner.  The local singer and dancers did a very nice job, but the meal was not just bad, it was inedible.  Two slices of gristle in cold, gelatinous gravy, followed by cake so dry it was like sawdust.  Have a glorious time in Prague, but skip that dinner!

Incan Peru Done Perfectly

My wife and I just completed an ideal week in Peru arranged by Cox and Kings, America. The itinerary they planned was executed flawlessly. All the hotels, tours, meals and guides exceeded our high expectations. We stayed in Belmond hotels in Lima, Cusco, Urubamba & Machu Picchu. They are all exceptional; immaculate and well situated; large and well appointed rooms. The staffs are welcoming and couldn’t do enough to ensure we had a memorable stay. Our package included breakfast and lunch. Hotel breakfasts had many choices both North & South American dishes; all tastefully prepared. Lunches at upscale restaurants with a great selection of Peruvian dishes. You’ll love Peruvian cooking & you will get plenty of it. You won't need dinner. Our guide, Henry Coavoy Goongora (we called him Henry), was excellent; able comprehend the subtleties of our questions. He went above & beyond to personalize our experience, e.g. arranging for my wife to ride a Peruvian Paso horse. We had a fantastic time.

Cox & Kings - India 2017

By: K.Bueso

Reviewed on: 10 Feb 2017

As a tour operator, I would definitely recommend Cox & Kings but I would make mention of certain concerning items which I have not seen with other tour operators such as G Adventures. The Good Cox & Kings made us feel welcomed since the day we arrived in India. A very friendly representative met us at the airport in India with our names on a board. This made us feel welcomed and safe. Also the representative was very helpful in some inquiries we had such as ATM withdrawal and purchase of a SIM Card at the airport. He was very friendly and conversational on the trip to the airport. At every step of the way, Cox & Kings had a representative to meet us and explain the process. We visited four different cities in India and they had several representatives assisting us to make sure the trip was great. The drivers were very professional and on time. The Kind of Bad Not sure if it was Cox & Kings or individual guides, but they push their "trusted" stores on to us for purchasing souvenirs

Inconsistency in Trip Planning

By: Anonymous

Reviewed on: 22 Oct 2017

There were many inconsistencies in the planning and execution of this recent trip. Turns out we could have gotten our China Visas in the States and could have bypassed Nepal which was our preference. Receiving other pertainent documents was also done at the last minute. Some of the hotel accommodations (in the countryside in Tibet) were not up to the standards of a trip of this caliber. The service and food at the Taj Tashi in Thimphu was also not up to par. The room at the Uma Paro was tiny and cramped. There was a very long day driving to Gantey, fours hours each way that could have been handled differently, by having us sleep overnight at the Gantey Lodge and returning the next day. Had we known It was a National Holiday in China for 8 days, we would have bypassed the one day in Chendu to see the Pandas; the crowds were horrific and made it very unenjoyable and impossible to see the Pandas even though we got up very early that day.
