Nicaragua: Luxury, Nature & Adventure (9 days)

Rico Tours - Central & South America + Cuba

Managua, Nicaragua To San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua

Valid for Departures Now Through: 29 Mar 2018

Day 1
Managua, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge Lunch, Dinner

Arrive in Managua International Airport, Nicaragua. Please proceed through immigrations, collect your bags and continue through customs, then exit the international terminal. Our representative will meet you there. He will be holding a sign with your name on it. Your private driver will take you to Granada for the boat transfer to Jicaro Island.

Day 2
Granada, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is at your leisure. Here's some info about your Jicaro Lodge accommodations:

Jicaro Island Ecolodge:

Jicaro Island Ecolodge is Nicaragua's most upscale nature resort located on a private island in Lake Nicaragua and recently named one of National Geographic unique lodges of the world. The lodge is located just a short boat ride from the colonial town of Granada with spectacular views of the Mombacho Volcano across the lake. Nine private casitas serve as the perfect setting for romantic escapes, activities and active exploration and wellness retreats. Immerse yourself in a magical island experience filled with peace, tranquility and access to a wide variety of tours and activities. A stay at Jicaro is the perfect upscale alternative to hotels and resorts in downtown Granada.

Private Casita:

At Jicaro you stay in your own little house, a “casita”. The nine casitas on the island all have lake views and are within a short walk from the pool, restaurant, and wellness center. The casitas are two stories, with a private bedroom and a king size bed on the second floor; and on the first floor, a spacious living area that connects to an outside deck overlooking the lake. The casitas and the furniture are made locally from Rainforest Alliance certified wood. Each casita is equipped with mosquito netting and ceiling fans, and the large doors and windows can all be opened for cross ventilation. Most notably, the oversized hammock and comfy furniture of the deck will invite you to relax and feel the peace of this magical lake. Early morning coffee and late afternoon ¨sundowner¨ delivery service is available upon request.

Day 3
Granada, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is at your leisure. We definitely recommend that you experience some of the incredible tours in this region. For example, we recommend:

"Flor de Caña" Rum Tour - Nicaragua is known for their exquisite rum and this is a great tour that tells the story of rum production in Nicaragua and, yes, you get to do a tasting!

Masaya Volcano & Artisan Market - This is a wonderful experience that showcases two major highlights in this area. The Masaya Volcano is eerie, beautiful and like most things in Nicaragua, comes with an amazing story and interesting history. The artisan market is a great place to see local crafts and do some shopping.

Day 4
Granada, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Another free day in Granada! Here are some more tours we recommend in the area:

Granada City Tour by Horse Carriage - this is the perfect way to get familiar with Granada and its history. When you are experiencing everything by horse carriage, you really feel like you have been taken back in time. We highly recommend this tour.

Mombacho Volcano "Crater Trail" & Canopy Tour - Hike the unique landscape around the Mombacho Volcano and see plenty of the local flora and fauna. After that, you can get the blood pumping a bit on a canopy zip-lining adventure high in the treetops.

Day 5
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgans Rock Breakfast

This morning, you will be transferred to the beach! As you travel south, you will see the island of Ometepe on your left. This island is made of two volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua.

Here's some info on your hotel at the beach:

Morgan's Rock Hacienda & Ecolodge:

Natural luxury on a private white sand tropical beach, stunning ocean-view bungalows, all within a 4,000-acre jungle define the Morgan’s Rock experience. Morgan´s Rock is a 15-bungalow hideaway on a mile-long picturesque sandy beach, frequented year-round by nesting sea turtles. Nearly half of the vast property is a private reserve. The rest is low-impact agricultural land (a farm called El Aguacate) and sustainable tropical forestland.

Ocean View Bungalow with Plunge Pool:

These bungalows were designed to make guests feel at one with nature while creating minimal impact on the surrounding environment. Each three-sided Ocean View bungalow is perched on a cliff 30-100 feet over the private beach and cove, just across a 50 yard jungle suspension bridge. Set into the treetops, each bungalow accommodates up to five people. Outside on the balcony is a special feature – a queen size day bed suspended by thick marine rope, reminding guests of the casual luxury they’ve come to experience and setting an appropriately relaxed pace for duration of their stay at the hacienda.

Day 6
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgans Rock Breakfast

Today is at your leisure. We recommend that you check out some of the great on-site experiences at Morgan's Rock. Those include:

Surfing - take a surfing lesson and enjoy the great waves.

Sport Fishing - hook a big one and also learn about conservation efforts and enjoy the diverse species of fish available in these waters.

Monkey Quest - take a ride into the jungle on a 4x4 and try to catch a glimpse of all the different monkey species swinging around in the trees.

Horseback Riding - enjoy a ride through the forests surrounding the hacienda and of course, enjoy a beautiful ride along the beach.

Kayaking - explore the local mangrove and estuaries on a kayak. You can also see great birds and wildlife around sunrise and sunset.

Catch your own shrimp and/or help out on the local farm - there are plenty of ways to see how sustainable, farm to table food makes its way to your plate each day.

Day 7
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgans Rock Breakfast

Another free day at Morgan's Rock! Maybe today is the day that you take one of the off-site tours in the area. Tour options include:

Canopy Tour & Rappelling, Turtle Watching, or a tour to the famous Ometepe Island.

Day 8
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgans Rock Breakfast

Last free day of the trip! Anything goes today... you can take a tour, lay on the beach all day, get a spa treatment, hike the local area, the world is your oyster today. Soak it all in!

Day 9
San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgans Rock Breakfast

Today your driver will meet you for your private transfer to the Managua International Airport. Approximate duration of the transfer is about 3 hours.

I highly recommend Rico Tours-Custom Itineraries. We knew what we were going to be doing at all times, not a step was missed. Everything was set up and done exactly like the itinerary said. Never did I have to question what to do next or with whom I was suppose to be meeting. Great job, thank you.

Rico Tours is definitely the 'go-to' tour operator for travel to Costa Rica. We didn't realize this before we set out on our adventure with 3 kids ages 11, 9 & 6 for a month in CR, but while we were conversing with owners of hotels & other excursion operators they all said that Rico Tours has been in CR for a long time and has a great reputation. We would certainly recommend utilizing their expertise on future trips back to CR, or to anybody who is considering travel throughout the country. Pura Vida!

We worked with Rico Tours to plan a family trip to Belize. They are knowledgable about the area and helped coordinate everything with our hotel. We loved the travel itinerary package they sent to us before the trip. It was filled with a ton of insights about what to pack and what to expect when arriving in Belize. Our travel advisor (Courtney) and Rico Tours also helped get us quickly rebooked with local transport due to our outgoing flight delay. It was a HUGE headache that we didn't have to deal with - especially when internet service can be spotty in Belize. I'd highly recommend.

Poor Communicator when Issues Came Up

By: Andrew

Reviewed on: 01 Feb 2018

If we hadn't had the weather closure of one of our lodges during our trip I'd be fully satisfied with Rico Tours. The operators they scheduled were pros and good. However, due to large amounts of rain, one of our lodges closed kicking off a frustrating chain of events that wasted half a day in follow up questions that we shouldn't have had to ask. The communications were simply unacceptable and unprofessional. We would ask a question and get a 2 word answer with no details leaving us to guess what we needed to ask. The cancellation resulted in replacing a raft in/out wilderness lodge with miles of on site hiking for a luxury spa hotel that was NOT remotely in line with our preferences. We wanted on site hiking, off the beaten bath and instead got parked in overcrowded Manuel Antonio with no on site activities other than bars and pools. Because of the poor communications we cut our losses and took it, but missed the part of the trip we were most looking forward to.
