Tana / Andasibe-mantadia National Park

After a leisurely breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route and visit La Mandraka Nature Farm. This afternoon check in to the Vakona Forest Lodge, your base for three nights. Visit Lemur Island, located on the grounds of the lodge and join an exhilarating spotlighting excursion this evening to search for nocturnal species.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

Spend two full days exploring the park. Begin at dawn to await the morning call of the indri, the largest of all lemurs. Each animal sings in its own voice; the echoes tell each group where every indri is located on the hill. Other species you may find include brown lemurs, gray bamboo lemurs, diademed sifakas, short-horned chameleons, and iridescent Madagascar tree boas. Birding is equally spectacular with endemics such as the Madagascar paradise-flycatcher and the brilliant blue vanga.

One of the last stands of spiny forest in Madagascar, Mandrare is considered to be sacred by the local tribes. Gallery forest along the river gives way to an arid landscape where a variety of endemic, drought-adapted plants and trees can be found. During day and night excursions, in game drive vehicles, and on foot, search for four species of resident lemurs—ringtail, Verraux’s sifaka, white-footed sportive, and mouse. Birds that can be found here include scops owls, hook-billed vanga, and Verreaux’s coua. You will also have the opportunity to meet with the Tandroy people of Ifotaka Village to learn about their traditions and daily life.

Board our charter flight to Maroantsetra on the northeast coast, then board a local boat to Dounia Forest Lodge, your home for three nights. Nestled between soft, sandy beaches and pristine rainforest, your elevated “tree-house” offers fantastic views of the coastline and surrounding forest canopy.

Explore the forest on foot, or take a kayak through the clear waters of a mangrove swamp. Search for a variety of colorful chameleons, from the large panther chameleon to the tiny Brookesia vadoni. The rainforest also supports a number of frogs, most of which are endemic to Madagascar, as well as leaf-tailed geckos. Ten species of lemurs can be found here, including the beautiful red-ruffed lemur which is native to this peninsula. There will also be opportunities to snorkel, swim, and meet with the local Betsimisaraka people who live within the park boundaries.

Set on a beach surrounded by lush gardens, you are free to stroll the trails, perhaps spotting several species of lemurs and sifakas meandering through the property.
