On the outskirts of Bologna, you will get to see the Ducati motorcycle factory and to watch some of the most famous motorcycles in the world, rolling off the production lines. The tour will include the fascinating museum, containing some early bikes and outlining their history. From here, your tour will continue to the historic centre of Bologna, with its tangle of medieval streets leading to the majestic Piazza Maggiore and the adjacent Piazza del Nettuno, with its magnificent statue of Neptune, created by Gianbologna in the 16th century. Bologna is also famous for its 666 arcades, stretching 2 miles up the Colle della Guardia to the Sanctuary of the Madonna of St. Luke. Perfect as a sunshade in summer and to keep the rain off in winter, they were also designed to be high enough to incorporate people on horseback. One of the many nicknames for Bologna is ‘La Grassa’ – the fat in reference to its fame as a centre of gastronomy. You will immediately think spaghetti Bolognese, but here, it is made with tagliatelle and the sauce is called ‘ragu’. Tagliatelle was said to have been invented for a visit by Lucrezia Borgia and was meant to represent her golden tresses. Whatever you eat, this city will not disappoint!
