Meet your guide and driver for a full day tour of the Ohrid Lake, the deepest lake of the Balkans. Your first destination will be the St. Naum Monastery, built on a rock above the Lake that offers spectacular views of the Lake Ohrid and the Black Drim River. You will also visit the springs of the Black Drim River. The water feeds forty-five springs from Lake Prespa making a huge lake-like spring, which flows into Ohrid Lake. The water is cold and clear like nowhere else and the area is inhabited by wild ducks and other birds. Enjoy a private traditional rowboat “kajc” tour of the springs and get closer to this miniature paradise.
Then you will continue to the town of Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a highlight of every trip in Macedonia. It is believed that a city known as Lychnidos existed on this location during the reign of Philip II – the father of Alexander the Great. In the second half of the 9th Century, the Bulgarians conquered Macedonia and under Tsar Samuil Ohrid became the capital of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. As a religious capital, Ohrid was also an important cultural and educational center. Its bishop St. Kliment (Clement) of Ohrid, who was a disciple of the inventors of the Glagolic alphabet – the brothers Cyril and Methodius, is credited with creating the Slavic alphabet and founding in Ohrid the first Slavic university. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Ohrid changed hands between Bulgaria, Byzantium, and Serbia until it fell to the Ottomans and remained under their control until the early 20th century. Your guide will take you for stroll through this jewel box of medieval architecture and historical monuments. You will walk through the Old Bazaar with its small square, a 1000-year old tree and the clock tower. You will visit the most famous church of Ohrid – the Church of St. Sophia with the biggest composition of 11th century frescoes preserved in the world. It is the cathedral of Ohrid’s Archbishops that have always flirted with Roman Catholicism, so it would keep its important position with the Orthodox Church. You will continue to the Kaneo Settlement, the most scenic sport of Ohrid with the St. John Kaneo church from the 13th century that stands on a cliff over Lake Ohrid. Among other exciting sites, you will visit the Tsar Samuel's Fortress from 11th century. The three kilometers of towers and high walls were originally built to protect the town on the three sides not facing the lake. The fortress now dominates the town and provides splendid views of the lake and the mountains.
Later this afternoon, your guide and driver will take you back to Skopje.
