Meet your guide and driver at the hotel lobby for a private full day tour of Istria’s finest historic sites. First you will visit Poreč – the former Roman colony with exceptionally rich and diverse cultural heritage. Your guide will take you for a walk through the orthogonal sets of streets, completely preserved from the Roman times. With the sights of Romanesque architecture with beautiful Venetian gothic palaces you will reach the town’s most valuable monument – the Euphrasian Basilica. This early Christian cathedral from 6th century was made in the Byzantine style and called after Euphrasius, the Bishop of Poreč who commissioned it. The whole complex of was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Then you will continue with your guide and driver towards Pula, a town with 3000 years of history. It was the home of the Histrians, the Romans and the Venetians. Various layers of history took part in the making of this unique town in which Roman temples defy baroque palaces, early Christian churches stand face to face to Austrian villas and the remnants of mediaeval walls are cut through by antique town gates. First you will come across the Amphitheatre, revealing itself to you in all its beauty. One of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres, popularly called the Arena of Pula was built in the 1st century AD, at the same time as the magnificent Colosseum in Rome. It was once a site of gladiator fights, mediaeval knight tournaments and today it is the venue for summer performances. While strolling through Pula with your guide you will come across numerous monuments of Roman architecture such as the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi from the 1st century B.C., the Temple of Augustus and Small Roman Theatre in the town centre. You will complete your tour in Rovinj, one of the most “photogenic” towns in the Mediterranean. Once a fishing town, it now offers a warm Mediterranean setting to its visitors. Experience the sights of this magical town while strolling with your guide up narrow streets to the magnificent church of St. Euphemia, the town’s most important monument. This baroque building made in Venetian style was dedicated to the saint and martyr whose sarcophagus was miraculously washed ashore somewhere around the year 800. Later this afternoon your guide and driver will take you back to your hotel.
