Description

This morning you will meet your local guide at the lobby for a full day jeep safari of Hvar Island. Unique fusion of lush Mediterranean nature and rich heritage make it an undeniable gem of Adriatic.

You will start your day with a visit to Stari Grad (Old Town), the former Greek colony of PHAROS and the first settlement of the island. A thousand years of history have left many traces in the urban structure of the Town. The Town Walls of Pharos, built by the Greeks the 4th century BC, the Roman mosaics, the mediaeval streets and above all Tvrdalj – the Renaissance fortified castle – are all the signposts through a millennium long life of the town.

You will ride through the beautiful landscape of vineyards, olive-groves and lavender fields to Jelsa, a small town with a long winemaking tradition. For as early as the 4th century BC, the Ancient Greeks brought the grape vine to this sunny island and planted it in the fertile plain of Pharos. Throughout the centuries of rich and turbulent history, people on Hvar cultivated their vineyards with great skill and care, blessed with the lushness of Mediterranean.

Then you will discover a quirky forgotten village of Malo Grablje. Small village was deserted back in the 1960s and today is a wonderful open-air museum of a world gone by… However, you will not be totally alone! Your host Berti is a local that owns a small stone-built house in the abandoned village. Here he will make a traditional, tavern-style lunch for you. Enjoy local cuisine, touch of history and magnificent views before heading back to Hvar town.

Once in the town, you guide will take you for a walking tour of this historic town. At the largest square in Dalmatia, admire Hvar’s grand palaces and beautiful historic edifices. The most impressive is the Cathedral of St. Stephen, a harmonious synthesis of the Renaissance and early Baroque elements. Its graceful 17th century bell tower is the most beautiful element in the skyline of the town. A stroll through narrow streets of the town will reveal numerous other monuments, such as the Franciscan and Benedictine Monastery and the mighty Arsenal, a 13th century warehouse for the communal war galley that used to house Hvar theatre – the oldest theatre in Europe dating from 1612.

After the tour of the town, we suggest you to visit the Hvar Fortress for breathtaking views. A 16th century citadel, built in the time of the Venetian rule, is perched on a hill above the ramparts and it dominates the town.

Top Notch Tours and Hotels (Mostly)

Overall, we had a wonderful experience with this company, enjoying our hotels and tours immensely. The highlights were the Hotel Bellevue in Dubrovnik, Croatia; the private boat tour of the islands near Dubrovnik; the Hotel Monte Mulini in Rovinj, Croatia; and the Chef's Table dinner at Hotel Monte Mulini. Some lowlights were the Falkensteiner Hotel & Spa Iadera in Punta Skala. It is very isolated and too far from the town of Zadar. In order to go to Zadar, it is a quite expensive taxi ride away, so we were not motivated to eat dinner anywhere but at the resort, and both meals were mediocre. The Falkensteiner itself felt like a Disney World resort (not in a good way) with lots of families with small children and a massive hotel that felt like a giant cruise ship. Maid service was spotty, seemingly difficult to get good service with the large quantity of rooms they had to manage.

GREAT fun!

Our guide, Zrinka (sp?) was fantastic, a local professor with a great sense of humor - essential with our group of 9! We enjoyed the history of Croatia and Dubrovnik on our drive to a vineyard and wine tasting in a very nice, comfortable luxury Mercedes van. One at the vineyards we piled into trucks and drove up into the terraces with the winemaker, followed by a tasting...and purchasing..of some delicious Croatian wines. Following this we then headed to the oyster beds where we boarded a boat to a private island to enjoy fresh Croatian oysters followed by mussles, local wine and grapa. Z was very accommodating to changes to the schedule! We drove to the top of the cable car and then took the ride down, to be met by our driver. Z then accompanied us into the Old Town giving us the history and answering questions. We were so happy with our guide, she was accommodating of any changes from the original tour, she was insightful, very knowledgeable and charming. We would highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic, Lionel organised everything beautifully. The Hotels were great, small rooms but big enough. The Tours were excellent and you could enjoy all the tour or have shorter time if you wanted and change a tour if you were tired. I would certainly use Lionel again and will be passing on his name to our friends
