Encircled within its Renaissance-era fortifications, Lucca has wall-to-wall Tuscan treasures. Join your guide to discover the city’s historical highlights, people-watching piazzas and charming churches… Lucca is one of the only cities in Italy with its old walls completely intact, wrapping this elegant city an almost enchanted, sleeping beauty-like flair. Join your guide to wander the cobbled lanes and pretty piazzas of Tuscany’s best-kept secret and learn about the fascinating history from its Roman roots through Napoleon’s reign and into the heady days of the Risorgimento. A walk through Lucca is like a lesson in architectural history, from the ruins of the Roman amphitheater to Romanesque jewels like the cathedral of San Martino with its columns and rich decoration and monumental Renaissance buildings like the Palazzo Ducale. No trip to Lucca would be complete without learning about the city’s favorite son, renowned composer Giacomo Puccini. Puccini, whose birthplace and statue are along our route, started in the boys’ choir of the San Martino cathedral and went on to compose such international sensations as La Boheme, Tosca and Madame Butterfly. And it wouldn’t be Tuscany without great food and wine – your guide will be delighted to recommend a quaint trattoria where you can dine on local favorites like tortelli lucchese and zuppa di farro. Or better yet, nip into one of the many delicatessens and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the pretty park atop the city’s ancient walls.
