Conservancy. Check in for lunch & enjoy an afternoon game drive.

Lewa Downs is a family owned 60,000 acre game reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the foothills of Mt. Kenya, this premier wildlife haven has been the home of the Craig family since 1924. Although just 30 miles north of the equator, it is home to animal species not seen in the southern hemisphere, including reticulated giraffe, the endangered Grevy zebra and blue-skinned Somali ostrich. Black and white rhino, introduced here in the early eighties in a bid to provide sanctuary, thrive here and are relocated to other parks in Kenya - guests can witness this extraordinary endeavour in species support and spend time with orphan rhinos being hand-raised.

All three of the big cats, up to 200 elephant, Greater Kudu and the graceful Gerenuk antelope with its elegant neck which stands on its long hind legs to browse on shrubs and trees, are part of the unique experience that is Lewa. As a trailblazer in conservation, it presents as an award-winning catalyst, Lewa has pioneered community based initiatives.

Day 4
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Sirikoi Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Go for an early morning game drive and come back for a late breakfast. Relax during the afternoon before heading out on a nature walk.

As an activity based reserve, it lends unique bush experiences that are restricted in national parks: you can ride horseback alongside herds of giraffe, zebra and antelope, take a night game drive, walk with armed rangers, or enjoy a camel ride to a bush breakfast. Several springs bubble up and feed the reserve's perennial water supply which supports the game and ensures wildlife sightings year round - including rare Sitatunga antelope which, with their splayed hooves, are swamp residents.

Day 5
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya
Sirikoi Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Visit the Lewa Wildlife headquarters and meet the rangers that protect the rhinos. In the afternoon head out on a game drive finishing with a magical sundowner.

Day 6
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Angama Mara Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to the Masai Mara. After lunch head out on a game drive.

The Masai Mara plays host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. 1,500 square kilometers of broad, biscuit coloured savannah sprawls as home to huge numbers of birds (almost 600 species including many raptors) and animals and is contiguous with the enormous expanse of the Serenegeti; the two combine as the most diverse ecosystem on the continent.

The word 'mara' comes from the local dialect, Maa, as spoken by the Masai and means mottled; certainly the vast grasslands here are spotted by the shadows of small clouds which scud across a huge sky stretched taut-blue above. Every year this place witnesses the most incredible animal phenomenon on the planet - the wildebeest migration moves north from the Serengeti in search of fresh pasture, and returns south around October, a heaving line of grunting, snorting life that stretches for miles. At the Mara River they mass together nervously on the banks before plunging frantically onwards; their quest for food overwhelming their fear of the crocodiles that lie in wait of an annual feast. This incredible spectacle involves the movement of over a million wildebeest and their groupies, half a million Thomson's gazelle, half a million zebra as well as smaller herds of Topi and eland. They operate on a principle of safety in numbers, supported for the symbiotic relationships that have evolved between them. They are followed, inevitably, by predators, primarily lions - Big Cat Diary was filmed here, the cat population is large - and hyena.

Day 7
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Angama Mara Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your lunch today will be on the Out of Africa rock where the picnic scene was filmed. This is a totally private encounter and you can spend as long as you like up there. In the afternoon visit one of the local Masai villages.

Day 8
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Angama Mara Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning awake early to head out on a balloon safari at first light. Enjoy a bush breakfast out in the savannah with sparling wine before heading back for lunch. In the afternoon adventure out on a drive culminating in sundowners.

Day 9
Nairobi, Kenya
None Breakfast

Fly back to Nairobi & connect onto your international flight home.

Abercrombie & Kent Kenya, especially Fiona and Benton, ensured that our trip to Kenya was an unforgettable experience.  My sister and I went to Kenya to visit animal orphanages. Abercrombie & Kent Kenya met us at the Nairobi airport and made the entire trip a seamless experience.   Abercrombie & Kent Kenya staff drove us to our destinations, took us on game drives and delivered us to our flights. Abercrombie & Kent Kenya's staff brought a wealth of information including knowledge about the animals, history and culture.  I would not hesitate to recommend Abercrombie & Kent Kenya.  The company and staff ensured that our trip was amazing.

A&K put together, along with my Travel Advisor, a custom 8 week long tour of Africa for me involving 8 countries. It was a great trip. It covered everything I had wanted to see and more, providing great variety. The travel arrangements all worked smoothly, The accommodations, guides, excursions provided were all first rate. I've used A&K on many trips before. This was probably the most complicated one they have organized for me and I am delighted with how smoothly it went.
