Paris is far older than one might think: at least twice as old as Notre Dame. Before 1000 A.D. it was, variously, a Gallic settlement, a Roman town, and a Frankish royal capital, visited by such figures as Julius Caesar, Julian the Apostate, and Clovis the Frank. Many of the remains of this early history lie buried under the streets of the modern city, some of which we will discover on this exploration of the founding of Paris.
Our walk begins where Paris (or better, the Roman city Lutetia) itself did, on the Île de la Cité. Following these introductions, we may observe the surviving Roman roads and consider the impact that ancient urban planning has had on Paris to this day. By following the main road of the Roman city toward the south we will arrive at the superb remains of the Roman Baths at the Musée de Cluny. Here our visit will concentrate on the structure, function, and history of this huge edifice. We will examine the display of Roman statues and sculpted monuments with their Latin and Celtic inscriptions, which allow us a glimpse into the religious and civic life of the city's inhabitants. One highlight is the statue of the last Pagan emperor, Julian the Apostate, a lover of the city, who was proclaimed emperor here by Roman legions.
From the Baths we will take a short bus ride to Les Arènes de Lutèce (Lutetia), the Roman amphitheater, before climbing the Mountain of St Geneviève to acquaint ourselves with the legend of this fifth-century saint and the first abbey, built in her honor by Clovis. We'll descend from the Mountain through the Latin Quarter, walk past a fragment of the twelfth-century fortifications of Philippe Auguste and the site of another abbey to finish where we started on the Île de la Cité. The walk ends with an overview of the city around 1200 A.D., and tips as to where to see further remains from this early period.
