DAY LOCATION(S) HOTEL MEALS DESCRIPTION
Day 1
Copenhagen, Denmark
Gilleleje Badehotel Breakfast

Bike to Østerport station and take line E S-train to Hillerød (35 min ride).

Bike to Frederiksborg Castle

The impressive Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød was built in the Renaissance style by King Christian IV in 1625. The Palace is surrounded by the Castle Lake, a Baroque Garden and romantic landscaped garden where we will start with a stroll. Frederiksborg Castle is the largest Renaissance Castle in Scandinavia and incorporates the finest Renaissance architecture and craftsmanship. The visit to the castle includes the very fine national historical museum, the Chapel, and the Knights´Hall.

Then Continue to Esrum Kloster (possible to have coffee break):

Esrum Abbey was founded by the Cistercian Order in 1151 and was greatly influential as the spiritual center of the Cistercians in Denmark. At present Esrum Abbey is an open attraction with changing exhibitions and a varied program with events, lectures, family activities, food experiences etc.

Then carry on to Gilleleje:

The town has preserved many of the idyllic cosy streets and thatched houses built when it was a fishing village. Gilleleje is a lively tourist, commercial and fishing town. Its heart is the fishing port, Sealand's largest.

Overnight at Gilleleje Badehotel

Double room, a magnificent ocean view from the highest point of Northern Zealand.

Gilleleje Badehotel stands atop a 30 m high cliff at Zealand’s most northern point “Gilbjerghoved”.

The white main building with its blue balconies was built in 1908 on the site, where there has been a guest house since 1895. The distinctive atmosphere from the early 1900s has been preserved thanks to the gentle renovations which have been carried out throughout the hotel’s history.

All over the hotel you will experience a light and cosy atmosphere, Swedish-inspired furniture, wickerwork and patterned wall-paper in blue and white.

Day 2
Gilleleje, Denmark
Marienlyst Spa & Casino Breakfast

After breakfast we start our biking to Tegners Museum and visit the sculpture park.

Rudolph Tegners Museum is a unique monument to a single artist conceived and realized by himself as a synthesis of sculpture, architecture and nature.

The sculptor Rudolph Tegner (1873-1950) strove in his artistic production toward a new monumental style and some of Tegners sculptures were a provocation to his contemporaries both on account of their scale and content. He was undisputed a groundbreaking figure as an opposition to the classicism of Thorvaldsen. Tegner raised his enormous Museum in the wild, uncultivated part of North Zealand called Russia, where it is possible to view his lifetime work.

In the park you can see 14 sculptures.

Then you continue to Hornbæk Habour. And old fishing habour with charming old houses

Hornbæk is the place to find peace of mind and enjoy the unique environment with the beach, the plantation, the fresh air, and strolls around the town. Soon you will understand why the famous artists chose Hornbæk for their inspiration.

After a stop in Hornbæk you continue through the plantation and following the coastline to Helsingør. Here you visit he impressive Kronborg Castle, which was the scene of “Hamlet”, one of the most famous and frequently performed stage plays in the world.

Kronborg is now known all over the world as Hamlet’s castle, and Elsinore is known as the Town of Hamlet.

The castle was built between 1574 and 1585 to protect Danish interests and also to protect the Danish treasury by levying tolls on the shipping which passed through the narrow straits.

Overnight at Hotel Marienlyst room with seaview.

From a major part of the hotel - and naturally from the big terrace and lawn - there is an unimpeded view of the Swedish coastline, Kronborg Castle and Elsinore marina - a beautiful and breathtaking view at any time of the year.

Included in stay is free access to the pool area with water slide, sauna and Jacuzzi, and entrance to the casino.

Day 3
Helsingor, Denmark
None None

Bike to Humlebæk and visit Louisiana, Museum of Modern art.

Louisiana is an international museum with a considerable collection of modern art. The museum’s permanent collection includes more than 3000 works and is one of the largest in Scandinavia. It takes its point of departure in the period after 1945 including artists like Picasso, Giacometti, Dubuffet, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Rauschenberg, Henry Moore, Louise Bourgeois, Philip Guston, Morris Louis, Jorn, Baselitz, Polke, Kiefer, and Per Kirkeby.

Louisiana’s exhibition program has always covered a wide range primarily focusing on the interaction between the different art forms. Louisiana therefore has a long standing tradition of culture-historical exhibitions and of presenting large, international photo, design and architecture shows. The exhibition activities and the development of the collection are closely linked, and thus the exhibitions often leave their mark on the collection thanks to acquisitions and donations.

After Lousiana you continue to Rungsted for a visit at Karen Blixen Museum:

Rungstedlund is the house in which the author Karen Blixen was born, and to which she returned after 17 years as a farmer in Africa. She lived here until her death in 1962, and it was here that she wrote all her internationally renowned stories.

Rungstedlund is situated on the shores of the Øresund Strait, and behind the house itself there are 40 acres of land - garden, meadow and grove. In accordance with Karen Blixen's wishes, the area has been set aside as a bird sanctuary, which is open to the public. Karen Blixen,s grave can also be found here.

pastels.

After visiting Rungstedlund, continue back to Copenhagen.

great walking tour! We loved our guide and learned quite a bit. She was flexible and ended switching gears a bit to talk to us about the Beer Culture in Copenhagen. I never hesitate to trust Cassandra and her suggestions.
