Mexico & Guatemala: Footsteps of the Mayans (9 days)

Day 1
Hotel Bo
preferred: Hotel Guayaba Inn - 2 Nights
Upon arrival in Tuxtla, after lunch travel overland to Chiapa de Corzo and the Sumidero Canyon. Board a private boat and pass beneath the majestic rock walls, soaring thousands of feet into the sky. Scan the waters for the endangered American crocodile and the treetops for spider monkeys, while cormorants glide above. Continue to the highland cultural center of San Cristobal de las Casas.
Day 2
San Cristobal, Mexico
Hotel Bo
preferred: Hotel Guayaba Inn
After breakfast today, embark on a cultural walking journey through the Chiapan countryside, home to whispering pine forests, indigenous villages and lovely mountain vistas. In San Lorenzo Zinacantan, learn more about the Maya, visit some local homes and sample some homemade liquor. Return to San Cristobal de las Casas this afternoon.
Day 3
Palenque, Mexico
Quinta Chanabnal - 2 Nights Breakfast
Descend from the alpine forests of the Southern Sierra Madre to the steamy lowland jungles of Palenque. Home to incredible Mayan ruins, as well as labyrinthine tunnels and underground river systems, Palenque is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico.
Day 4
Palenque, Mexico
Quinta Chanabnal Breakfast, Lunch
Spend the day on a privately guided exploration of the stunning archaeological site of Palenque, including the Templo de las Inscripciones, one of the most renowned burial monuments in the Americas. Nestled deep in the jungles at the foot of the Sierra Madre del Sur, Palenque's setting is as memorable as the site is important for the light it sheds on Mayan traditions, rituals, ceremonies and spirituality.
Day 5
Tikal, Guatemala
Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel
preferred: La Lancha Resort - 2 Nights
Set out early to the Mayan site of Yaxchitlan, which is renowned for its ornamented building facades, roof combs and impressive stone lintels that depict battles and ceremonial events. This ancient city's unique position on the mighty Usumacinta River allowed it to control trade throughout the region, making it one of the most important sites in the Mayan world. On the way back to Palenque, stop at another well-guarded secret of the Lacandon forest, Bonampak, which is famous for its astonishing frescoes inside the modest looking Templo de las Pinturas. After some time to take in these astonishing illustrations, cross the river into Guatemala and travel onward to Tikal.
Day 6
Tikal, Guatemala
Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel
preferred: La Lancha Resort
After a leisurely morning spent enjoying the amenities of your jungle lodge, explore Lago Peten Itza and its lakeshore villages aboard a boat this afternoon. Make stops at the quaint village of El Remate, which is known for its wood carvers, as well as the island town of Flores. Sample Guatemalteca cuisine and shop for colourful textiles from local vendors.
Day 7
To Antigua
Meson Panza Verde
preferred: El Convento Boutique Hotel - 2 Nights
Buried deep within the rainforest, the ruins of Tikal include more than 3,000 moss-draped temples, houses and plazas. Perhaps the most visually stunning and impressive of all Mayan sites, Tikal's five monolithic temples pierce the jungle canopy, and its ancient plazas, stelae and ball courts tell of a rich and powerful history when Tikal's population reached almost 100,000. After your guided tour, soar above the jungle on a scenic flight to Guatemala City and onward to historic Antigua.
Day 8
Antigua, Guatemala
Meson Panza Verde
preferred: El Convento Boutique Hotel
The World Heritage Site of Antigua Guatemala was the colonial Spanish capital of Central America. Today, you will accompany your local guide for a walking tour of its cobbled streets, lovely gardens and welcoming cafes and shops. Your boutique hotel is located right in the heart of the city.
Day 9
Guatemala City, Guatemala
None Breakfast
Bid farewell to Guatemala as you transfer to the Guatemala City airport to catch your onward flight.

the agency used too many different companies and out sourced the trips and guides to different areas that it was difficult to find who was responsible and who to contact in case of an issue. People will be better served if the same company was consistently used. Also if they have booked a room in a hotel, not to book the lowest category of the room in the hotel but give guests an option to book a room with a balcony or overlooking the water

I have a major issue with Cox and Kings as a “luxury supplier”.There is more to the term than booking expensive hotels and tours. A well planned, informative experience that ensures client satisfaction must occur. Communication with Cox and Kings was almost nil. There was virtually no information provided to us once they had payment. The final delivery of documents was nothing more than a copy of the original booking marked final. These documents (such as they were) came late. Cox and Kings excuse was they “were waiting on ‘final’ confirmation from suppliers”. Based on the start of our trip, it’s not clear that they were communicating with them any better than they were talking to us.  They failed to tell us that the in country flight could only accomodate 25lbs of luggage, great fun repacking. They screwed up the excursions planned at our first stop and we missed one. Another listed tour stop did not happen and several were not as described. GO ELSEWHERE!

Our travel agent used Cox and Kings for our group's three-day stay in Prague. The hotel, Hotel Paris, was wonderful and the tour guide was exceptional.  We had a wonderful time while we were there.  The only disappointment was the Hungarian folk dancing show/dinner.  The local singer and dancers did a very nice job, but the meal was not just bad, it was inedible.  Two slices of gristle in cold, gelatinous gravy, followed by cake so dry it was like sawdust.  Have a glorious time in Prague, but skip that dinner!

Incan Peru Done Perfectly

My wife and I just completed an ideal week in Peru arranged by Cox and Kings, America. The itinerary they planned was executed flawlessly. All the hotels, tours, meals and guides exceeded our high expectations. We stayed in Belmond hotels in Lima, Cusco, Urubamba & Machu Picchu. They are all exceptional; immaculate and well situated; large and well appointed rooms. The staffs are welcoming and couldn’t do enough to ensure we had a memorable stay. Our package included breakfast and lunch. Hotel breakfasts had many choices both North & South American dishes; all tastefully prepared. Lunches at upscale restaurants with a great selection of Peruvian dishes. You’ll love Peruvian cooking & you will get plenty of it. You won't need dinner. Our guide, Henry Coavoy Goongora (we called him Henry), was excellent; able comprehend the subtleties of our questions. He went above & beyond to personalize our experience, e.g. arranging for my wife to ride a Peruvian Paso horse. We had a fantastic time.

Cox & Kings - India 2017

By: K.Bueso

Reviewed on: 10 Feb 2017

As a tour operator, I would definitely recommend Cox & Kings but I would make mention of certain concerning items which I have not seen with other tour operators such as G Adventures. The Good Cox & Kings made us feel welcomed since the day we arrived in India. A very friendly representative met us at the airport in India with our names on a board. This made us feel welcomed and safe. Also the representative was very helpful in some inquiries we had such as ATM withdrawal and purchase of a SIM Card at the airport. He was very friendly and conversational on the trip to the airport. At every step of the way, Cox & Kings had a representative to meet us and explain the process. We visited four different cities in India and they had several representatives assisting us to make sure the trip was great. The drivers were very professional and on time. The Kind of Bad Not sure if it was Cox & Kings or individual guides, but they push their "trusted" stores on to us for purchasing souvenirs

The entertainment at all venues ,including on board the ship, was top quality. Accommodations for inclement weather ( not too warm and or sunny) were thoughtful and efficient.

Inconsistency in Trip Planning

By: Anonymous

Reviewed on: 22 Oct 2017

There were many inconsistencies in the planning and execution of this recent trip. Turns out we could have gotten our China Visas in the States and could have bypassed Nepal which was our preference. Receiving other pertainent documents was also done at the last minute. Some of the hotel accommodations (in the countryside in Tibet) were not up to the standards of a trip of this caliber. The service and food at the Taj Tashi in Thimphu was also not up to par. The room at the Uma Paro was tiny and cramped. There was a very long day driving to Gantey, fours hours each way that could have been handled differently, by having us sleep overnight at the Gantey Lodge and returning the next day. Had we known It was a National Holiday in China for 8 days, we would have bypassed the one day in Chendu to see the Pandas; the crowds were horrific and made it very unenjoyable and impossible to see the Pandas even though we got up very early that day.

Our guide, John was great. He was so knowledgeable about the animals and the parks, and he knew where to look for the animals. We really enjoyed having him as our guide.
