Upon arrival in Yogyakarta you are picked up from the airport by a private driver and guide and transferred to your hotel.

Following breakfast, you will set out for the drive to Prambanan. This ancient Hindu temple compound is one of the biggest in South-East Asia and was built in the 9th century. It is characterized by its tall and pointed architecture, typical of Hindu temple architecture and is dedicated to the trinity, the expression of god as creator, preserver and destroyer. Your specialist tour guide will explain the history and symbolism of the temples as you walk around.

Continue the drive to the nearby traditional village of Bugisan where you’ll be greeted by friendly local hosts. Begin your ox cart ride, enjoying this very unique and laid back form of transportation, and undisturbed views of the Plaosan temples. You’ll pass rice paddies and chili plantations along the way where locals are busy going about their daily routines.

Upon entering in the village, continue on foot to the house of the jamu maker. Jamu is used in daily life by the Javanese and you will often see the ‘Jamu Lady’ wandering around the streets with colorful bottles of herbal medicines that treat a variety of ailments. The host will show you how to make this “beras kencur” jamu and, of course, offer you a glass.

Walk to a neighbors’ home nearby where they make a traditional Javanese snack called emping (if not in season you will visit tofu making home industry). On the next stop, see the ladies from the village playing gamelan, traditional ensemble music of Indonesia. The friendly and talented ladies will be happy to let you try your hand and join in the ensemble!

Return to your hotel.

After breakfast and check out, set out to explore the famous Buddhist Temple of Borobudur, listed as one of the 7 wonders of the world, and comprised of thousands of volcanic and river stone blocks. The temple was built in the 8th and 9th centuries entirely by human labor and took more than 75 years to complete. The walls and balustrades are decorated with fine low reliefs and the circular platforms are covered with 72 stupas, each containing a statue of Buddha.

After visiting Borobudur continue to the nearby Pawon & Mendut temples, smaller but equally beautiful. Mendut, Borobudur and Pawon, all of which are Buddhist temples, are located in one straight line. There is a mutual religious relationship between the three temples, although the exact ritual process is unknown.

From here drive to Magelang for check in to the MesaStila resort where the remainder of your day is free at leisure. The resort is located on a working coffee plantation and is a destination on itself. Many activities can be done which you can arrange with the reception at your preferred time.

After breakfast and check out, depart for Semarang for your flight to Pangkalanbun, the entry point to central Kalimantan.Upon arrival at Pangkalanbun Airport you will be greeted by your local guide and transferred to Kumai port to board a local Klotok boat for a scenic journey along the Kumai and Sekonyer River. Start the cruise first on the wide Kumai River and after 20 minutes enter the much smaller Sekonyer river that marks the border of the Tanjung Puting National Park. The lush vegetation along the river bank first consists of Nipa palm (a palm tree only found near estuaries as they grow in salty water), slowly replaced by Pandans trees. While cruising through Tanjung Puting National Park, you can spot many wild animals as this area is known for its ecological and biological diversity with mangrove swamps and dense jungles filled with primates such as orang-utans, proboscis monkeys, macaques, leopards, lizards and more than 250 bird species.Lunch and dinner will be served onboard the boat Overnight on riverboatNote: the boats we use are the best available. They are comfortable with hot water showers and AC in the cabin with plenty of seating area on the upper deck with daybeds and comfortable chairs available. On most parts of the river there is no internet connection available. Food and snacks are included as well as water, coffee & tea. Alcoholic beverages if required should be ordered up front and only a small selection is available in most parts of Kalimantan.

Day 6

Begin cruising upstream on the Sekonyer river towards Camp Leaky. After a while the boat will turn off the main Sekonyer River and enter a small narrow branch of the river where suddenly the water changes from its brown color to a natural black color. Along the way your guide will point out the various birds that live in the jungles around the river, including kingfishers, broadbill, and hornbills.Continue cruising until you reach Camp Leakey, the most famous place for orangutan research in the world. Over the years as many as 200 orangutans have been gradually reintroduced to the wild since the camp was founded in 1971.

Lunch is served on board just before arriving at Camp Leakey.After lunch disembark at Camp Leakey for a 30 minute walk along a wooden pontoon then following a jungle path with a chance to observe more wild animals along the way: gibbons, long tail macaque as well as wild pigs. Feedings at Camp Leakey take place daily with rangers bringing bananas or other fruits to wooden platforms inside the jungle. Slowly several orangutans start coming down: Watching them going from branch to branch sometimes high up in the trees with agility and grace really is an unforgettable experience. You will sit on fallen trunks only about 10 meters away from the platform and will have rangers with you. The orangutans may come to the platform from anywhere in the jungle with the dominant male always coming first and followed by females coming one after the other with their offspring.Return to the boat and start cruising again. At this time of the day many proboscis monkeys, an endemic species of Kalimantan and easily recognizable by their long red nose, are coming close to the river banks to spend the night in large groups hanging in the trees Dinner is served onboard the boatOvernight on the riverboat

Following breakfast you will be picked up by your guide and driver to begin a pleasant walk with a specialist 'farmer' guide for an insider's view into rural Balinese life. Travel to Pejeng village, which is situated on the outskirts of Ubud. Located between two rivers, this small village is surrounded by rice paddies that cascade down the hillside in lush green terraces. On arrival meet Nyoman, a local farmer who will be your expert guide during your walk. He will take you through his traditional village and show you the different types of houses and temples. As you walk through the tiered rice fields hear all about the subak system, an ancient irrigation system that has been in use since the 9th century. Pass by farmers tending to their crops, women washing their clothes in the river, and children playing games with homemade toys. Stop for a cooling drink of fresh young coconut straight off the tree before enjoying a simple picnic lunch in Nyoman's traditional bale. All the while Nyoman will regale you with stories and interesting anecdotes about village life giving you an in-depth insight into Balinese culture and traditions.Return to your resort afterwards and have remainder of the day free at leisure.Overnight in Ubud

After breakfast and check out your driver and guide will pick you up together with your luggage.Spend a full day discovering the natural beauty and ancient relics of the Balinese midlands. Start the day with a visit to Pura Taman Ayun, the 17th century temple of Mengwi, set in a beautiful park with trees and ponds full of lotus blossoms. The large spacious temples and multi-tiered shrines are surrounded by a wide, elegant moat. Continue to Bedugul, a village in the central highlands famous for its stunning beauty and three lakes. Stroll around the traditional market where a myriad of fruits, vegetables, orchids, exotic spices and souvenirs are for sale. At the nearby Lake Bratan, have the opportunity to photograph the Ulun Danu temple, built on small islands in the serene lake. From here drive southwards to the famous UNESCO- listed rice terraces of Jatiluwih. Trek through this area of green stepped rice fields and hear about the Subak irrigation system that has been preserved by the Balinese farmers for centuries. Today you are free at leisure until your afternoon/evening program. In the late afternoon you will be taken to the location of the famous cliff-hanging temple at Uluwatu. Perched on the edge of a steep cliff, the temple sits 70 metres above the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean. The temple is inhabited by a large number of monkeys, many of whom can be found roaming the pathways. As the sun sets over the glittering ocean, watch a dramatic Kecak Dance or Ramayana Monkey Chant performance at the temple. Wearing traditional checked cloth around their waists, the male dancers chant in unison while depicting a battle from the Ramayana. After the performance drive to one of the beautiful beaches in Jimbaran for a barbeque seafood dinner in a beach restaurant. The restaurant offers a good selection of International and Indonesian dishes. We have not included a set meal for the evening, so you may select whatever you desire.
