Tortilis Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Early breakfast at the hotel, meet your representative at the hotel reception and transfer to Wilson Airport.

07:30 – Depart for Amboseli on a scheduled flight

08:05 – On arrival, you are met by camp staff and transferred to Tortilis Camp

Named after the trees from which it takes shade (acacia tortilas), Tortilis Camp lies on the boundary of Amboseli National Park. The omnipresent snow-domed Mount Kilimanjaro sets the stage for excellent game viewing and magnificent sunrises. The 15 accommodation tents are spacious and thoughtfully spaced at some distance from each other offering total privacy and breathtaking views across the plains to Africa's highest mountain. Perched on a look out hill, the main house offers relaxation, attentive service and delightful home-cooked Italian food.

Day 3
Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Tortilis Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You have the day to explore the park on scheduled morning and afternoon game viewing drives.

Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Africa's highest mountain 5895m (19,340ft) Kilimanjaro is one of the most popular of all Kenya's national parks. It lies some 240 kms (145 miles) south-east of Nairobi. The snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above a saucer of clouds dominates every aspect of Amboseli National Park which covers 392 sq. kms (151 square miles). The Tanzania border runs along its base and also forms the boundary of the Park. Years ago this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the African wilds.

The snows of Kilimanjaro, white and crystalline, also form a backdrop to one of Kenya's most spectacular displays of wildlife - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, cheetah, buffalo and hosts of plains game and the combination makes the park a photographer's paradise. Part of the Park is composed of a dried-up lake bed which in the shimmering heat produces mirages. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro's melting snows, form permanent watering places for the wildlife in times of drought. Many attractive birds can be easily seen and equally easily photographed around the lodges. This is one of the few places where the rare and beautiful Taveta Golden Weaver is found.

Day 4
Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Tortilis Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You have another day to explore the park.

As well as game drives, guests at Tortilis can enjoy bush walks with a Maasai guide - an experience which brings the sights, sounds and smells of the bush to life. In between game viewing, guests can relax by the swimming pool or sit on their verandah and watch a dazzling array of bird life.

Day 5
Amboseli National Park, Kenya
Samburu National Reserve, Kenya
Larsens Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Early breakfast and transfer to the airstrip.

08:15 – Depart for Nairobi on a scheduled flight

08:50 – Arrive in Nairobi, met and assisted to connect flights

09:15 – Depart for Samburu on a scheduled flight

11:10 – You are met on arrival by camp staff and transferred to Larsen’s Camp

Larsen’s Camp is a small, luxurious tented camp set in lush lawns on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu National Reserve. Named in honor of safari pioneer Eric Larsen, the camp offers a rustic step back in time to the days of the earliest safaris, with all the public 'rooms' under green canvas. The 17 en suite tents are simply but elegantly furnished, with private wooden decks overlooking the rushing river, where elephant, buffalo and a multitude of antelope species come regularly to drink. Larsen’s offers a surprising degree of comfort, with hot showers, complimentary aperitifs, and first-class dining. In the bar, Eric's old cabin trunks and pith helmets help you to imagine yourself back to the earliest days of safari - while you play backgammon or chess on one of his original boards.

Day 6
Samburu National Reserve, Kenya
Larsens Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Samburu National Reserve (225 sq. km) offers what is arguably Kenya's greatest - and least changed - encounter with the wild Africa of yesteryear. This harsh, savagely beautiful wilderness depends on the steady flow of the Uaso Nyiro River for its existence; the river waters a wide variety of animal species not found south of the Equator, including the majestic Beisa Oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the thin-striped Grevy's zebra, and the 'Giraffe-necked' gerenuk antelope, which stands on its hind legs to feed. Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard can all be seen along the river, and the 400-plus species of birds are positively spectacular.

Day 7
Samburu National Reserve, Kenya
Larsens Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You have another day to explore the reserve on scheduled morning and afternoon game viewing drives.

Together with neighboring Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves, this area comprises 844 sq. km of protected semi-desert land. This is the home of the Samburu tribe, cousins of the Maasai, who share the same nomadic, cattle-herding existence, and an even stricter adherence to their age-old rites and custom.

All meals and overnight at Larsen’s Camp.

Day 8
Samburu National Reserve, Kenya
Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Sanctuary Olonana Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After an early morning game viewing drive and breakfast you will transfer to the airstrip.

10:05 – Depart in a scheduled flight for Maasai Mara

12:35 – You are met on arrival by camp staff and transferred to Sanctuary Olonana Lodge.

Sanctuary Olonana's 14 exceptional new suites, at least 130 square meters (1399 square feet) in size, flaunt clean lines and organic materials. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors fold open to reveal magnificent Mara River views and the interiors have been finished with elegant nature-inspired furnishings to create an ever-present sense of being connected to the great outdoors. Sumptuous king-sized beds, with overhead fans and a daybed on the deck invite you to relax inside or out, while the sprawling lower lounge area offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Three of the new suites feature an extra bedroom located off the open plan bathroom, perfect for families with young children. The unfaltering attention to detail extends to fully stocked mini-fridges, specially commissioned African art and glamorous en suites. Refined open plan marble- and slate-accented bathrooms feature a generous tub, double vanity and a rain shower with wall to ceiling glass windows ensuring you can enjoy the view wherever you are in the suite.

The soothing interiors of the main lodge are an extension of the surrounding wilderness as a Kenyan Greenheart tree extends through the centre. Dramatic glass doors open out from the lounge to the terrace. Here, faded indigo rugs and elegant Edison-bulb pendant lights gently illuminate the decking without competing with the natural ambiance. The inviting new fire pit is encircled by deckchairs, with each seat promising river views. Dine on the deck of the main lodge and overlook the river's resident hippos.

Day 9
Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Sanctuary Olonana Camp Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You have the day to explore the reserve on scheduled game drives

The jewel in Africa's crown, Maasai Mara is host to the most spectacular array of wildlife. Her 1,510 square kilometers of open savannah, woodlands and tree-lined rivers creates an eco-system which supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. The western border of the park is the spectacular Siria Escarpment, and together with the acacia dotted plains, creates scenery of stunning beauty. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park as are elephant, giraffe, a variety of gazelle species and zebra. Cheetah and leopard are also regularly seen and, if lucky, you may also find rhino. Game viewing is never dull in the Mara, and patience is often rewarded with unique sightings: a pride of lion stalking their prey; a solitary leopard retrieving its kill from the high branches of an acacia tree; male wildebeest sparring to attract females into their harem; or even a herd of elephant protecting their young from opportunistic predators. The annual wildebeest migration traditionally is present in the Mara from July-September and at this time nature's dramas unfold before your very eyes at every turn.

All meals and overnight at Sanctuary Olonana.

Abercrombie & Kent Kenya, especially Fiona and Benton, ensured that our trip to Kenya was an unforgettable experience.  My sister and I went to Kenya to visit animal orphanages. Abercrombie & Kent Kenya met us at the Nairobi airport and made the entire trip a seamless experience.   Abercrombie & Kent Kenya staff drove us to our destinations, took us on game drives and delivered us to our flights. Abercrombie & Kent Kenya's staff brought a wealth of information including knowledge about the animals, history and culture.  I would not hesitate to recommend Abercrombie & Kent Kenya.  The company and staff ensured that our trip was amazing.

Africa trip 2017

A&K put together, along with my Travel Advisor, a custom 8 week long tour of Africa for me involving 8 countries. It was a great trip. It covered everything I had wanted to see and more, providing great variety. The travel arrangements all worked smoothly, The accommodations, guides, excursions provided were all first rate. I've used A&K on many trips before. This was probably the most complicated one they have organized for me and I am delighted with how smoothly it went.
