Day 1
Arrive Tokyo
Centrally Located Hotel In Tokyo None
On arrival at Narita Airport, you will be met in the arrival hall by your driver who will assist you with the included shared transfer to your hotel (60 – 90 minutes).Tokyo
One of the World’s most cutting-edge capitals, Tokyo is a city of contrasts. Famous for its cutting edge modernity, neon-lit landscape and towering skyscrapers, it is also home to sprawling parkland, peaceful shrines and temples and lovingly tended gardens. Despite its love affair with manga pop culture, fashion, high-tech trends and conspicuous consumption, below the surface is a city that has its roots in an ancient heritage. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples stand close to skyscrapers as a reminder of a more contemplative time and at the heart of the hyperactive centre lies the serene Imperial Palace, the home of the ruling emperor that provides a tangible link to the city’s historical past. Behind the shopping, entertainment and commercial emporia can be found quaint wooden houses, private gardens with meticulously clipped bonsai trees and the Zen-like calm of the Hamarikyu Gardens. The city’s reputation as a mega-expensive metropolis is ill conceived and visitors can take advantage of inexpensive izakaya bars and neighborhood cafes that serve delicious noodles and rice dishes.
The remainder of your day is at leisure.
Day 2

Head across town to Asakusa, Tokyo's old town where you can soak in the atmosphere of the Tokyo of old. Visit Sensoji, Tokyo's oldest temple and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Take a boat cruise on the Sumida River passing under 12 bridges. Disembark in Hamarikyu garden, an Edo Period Japanese garden surrounded by the Shiodome district's futuristic skyscrapers, a great example of how Japan is the land of contrasts, where you will stop for a cup of steaming matcha and Japanese sweets in a tea house on a small island in the park's lake.

Today leave Tokyo behind as you make the 90 minute journey to Hakone, the gateway to Mt Fuji and surrounding national park. Your local guide for the day will accompany you on the “Romance Car” express train from Tokyo’s Shinjuku station.
Hakone is a natural nature wonderland and is famous for its hot springs, outdoor pursuits and the view of the nearby Mount Fuji. It is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and is less than 100-km from Tokyo, thereby providing a popular weekend destination for city residents keen to escape the frenzy of the capital. Beautiful Hakone has about everything a vacationer could wish for. Besides the towering mountains, lakes and views of Mount Fuji, it is also blessed with interesting historical sites.

To explore the National Park, you can take advantage of the numerous forms of transport on offer. With its plethora of temples, shrines, festivals, rivers and bridges the mountain town of Takayama has been called a “little Kyoto”. The region is an agricultural one, and every day the freshest of vegetables and fruit are brought by local farmers to Takayama's lively morning market. Many unique traditions have evolved here, and due to the town's previously inaccessible location high in the Hida alpine region, a remarkable number of them have been preserved. The district called San-machi Suji, the traditional home of Takayama merchants and sake brewers, has been preserved in almost exactly the same state as 200 or 300 years ago. Here, are inns, shops and taverns which trace their history back many generations.

Here are inns, shops and taverns which trace their history back many generations. Visit the Takayama Jinya. Because of its valuable timber resources, the Hida Region around Takayama was put under direct control of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1692. The Takayama Jinya served as the local government office, headed by the officials dispatched from Edo. The present building complex includes various rooms for administrative purposes, offices, kitchens, toilets, bath rooms, residential space, a court room and storehouses. It was in official use until 1969, and is now open to the public as a museum. End the morning by stopping at a sake brewery and enjoy a tasting on Japan’s national tipple. Day 7
Takayama, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Kanazawa Breakfast
Travel by coach (1 hour) to Shirakawago.
Shirakawago Tour
Shirakawa-go is located in the Shogawa River Valley in the remote mountains that span from Gifu to Toyama Prefectures. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, they are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old. Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter. The roofs, made without nails, provided a large attic space used for cultivating silkworms. In the afternoon, you will contine on by coach to Kanazawa.
Day 8
Kanazawa, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Kanazawa Breakfast
A full day to explore Kanazawa, by public transport with a local guide.
Kanazawa Tour + Kenrokuen Garden VisitDuring the Edo Period, Kanazawa served as the seat of the Maeda Clan, the second most powerful feudal clan after the Tokugawa in terms of rice production and fief size. Accordingly, Kanazawa grew to become a town of great cultural achievements, rivaling Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). The highlight of any visit to Kanazawa is Kenroku-en garden. Ranked one of the top three in Japan, its breathtaking beauty shines through in any season. You will also visiting imposing Kanazawa castle, located next to the garden. Nearby Kagayuzen Kaikan is also of interest, offering demonstrations of the centuries-old Yuzen silk painting technique. During World War Two, Kanazawa was Japan's second largest city (after Kyoto) to escape destruction by air raids. Consequently, parts of the old castle town, such as the Nagamachi samurai district and chaya entertainment districts, have survived. Today, the city boasts many historical attractions such as restored residences and districts, as well as modern museums. But Kanazawa's unchallenged main attraction is Kenrokuen, one of Japan's "three best landscape gardens" and by many considered the most beautiful of them all.
Nagamachi Samurai District Visit
After lunch, Visit the Nagamachi Samurai district, where you can enter the the Nomura Samurai House, a traditional Japanese home with tea-ceremony room, an interior courtyard garden and artifacts from the Edo period. The Higashi Chaya District is the largest and by far the most interesting of Kanazawa's Geisha Districts. Many of the buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a tea ceremony room which is completely covered in gold leaf; you will also have a chance to visit the Kaikaro Chaya, which is still an operating tea house, but opens its doors to the public. You can enjoy a cup of green tea here to finish the day.
Day 9
Kanazawa, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Hiroshima Breakfast
Travel by train to Hiroshima (4 hours with one change in Shin Osaka).
Hiroshima is notorious for its destruction when the first atomic bomb was dropped over the city during the Second World War in August 1945. The destructive power of the bomb obliterated nearly everything within a two kilometre radius. From this absolute annihilation, Hiroshima has emerged phoenix-like, and become a beacon of hope and peace for the rest of mankind. Destroyed monuments of the city's historical heritage, such as the Shukkeien Garden and the Hiroshima Castle, have been rebuilt. The city centre boasts a large recreational area named Peace Memorial Park that reflects the aspirations of this re-born city. It is ironic that the city's past tragedy has become its biggest tourism attraction and visitors from around the world now come to see the Peace Memorial Park and its haunting museum. It is now the principal city of the Chugoku region and is home to over a million inhabitants who live in a municipality that boasts wide tree-lined boulevards and rivers. Besides excellent museums, Hiroshima is also the most popular gateway for trips to nearby Miyajima, an island considered to be one of Japan's most scenic spots. Your afternoon is at leisure.
Day 10
Hiroshima, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Hiroshima Breakfast
Hiroshima Tour
Today you will take a day tour of Hiroshima with a local guide, starting with a visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. The area where the park now lies was ground zero for the Atomic Bomb on 6th August 1945. After the bombing the Memorial Park was created and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the attack. Stroll through the park and discover the many memorials, monuments and statues in the park before heading into the Museum itself.
Miyajima Island Tour
From Hiroshima, a short ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island. A small sacred island located in the Inland Sea, it has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find perhaps the most photographed site in Japan - The Floating Torii Gate. Designated as one of Japan's '3 Most Beautiful Views', the shrine it belongs to dates back to the 6th century with the present structure dating back to the 12th century. The harmoniously arranged buildings reveal great artistic and technical skill, and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mere 'commoners' were not allowed to set foot on this holy place, and even now it is forbidden to give birth or die on the island! You will have time to explore the island and its many shrines and temples, sample local goodies like maple leaf shaped cakes before heading back to your hotel.
Day 11
Hiroshima, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Kyoto Breakfast, Dinner
Back on the Shinkansen as you travel to Kyoto (2 hours).
This is a must see destination in Japan. Kyoto is the nation's former capital and was the residence of the emperor from 794 until 1868. It is Japan's seventh largest metropolis with a population of around 1.4 million and a city of culture that offers a plethora of temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures that still survive today. With 2,000 religious buildings, including 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and associated architecture, it is one of the best preserved cities in Japan and has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status. Kyoto represents the “Japan of old” and beyond the high rise skyscrapers built as a monument to progress, the real monument to Japan's historical and cultural past can be found in the city's narrow alleyways where tea houses abound and kimono-clad geisha hurry from elegant function to function. This is a place to go back in time to Japan's mysterious past where echoes of the court nobility resonate at the Imperial Palace and the search for contemplation can be found in Ryoanji's Zen rock gardens.
Private Cooking in Machiya Experience
Japanese cuisine has such high reputation that it was declared UNESCO Intangible World Heritage. In this tour you will try your hand at making some of the dishes that made this cuisine so popular in the world and in particular learn about Kyoto's typical kappo cuisine. In Japanese, “kappo” means to cut ingredients with a knife and cook them over a fire. At a kappo style restaurant, fine seasonal cuisine is served over a counter where you sit face to face with a chef. In this class you will be the chef! (Transfers to and from the cooking school are not included)
Day 12
Kyoto, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Kyoto Breakfast
Kyoto City Tour
Today you explore the former imperial capital with a knowledgeable local guide, utilizing Kyoto's comprehensive bus system to visit some of Kyoto's World Heritage Sites. You will start your day with a visit to Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), which was originally built as a retirement villa for the Shogun. After his death it became a Buddhist Temple at his request, and is now one of Kyoto's most famous temples. Nijo Castle is an ornamental castle was built by the founder of the Edo Shogunate as his Kyoto residence and is surrounded by stunning surrounding gardens. The main building was completed in 1603, and is famous for its architecture, decorated sliding doors and ‘chirping' nightingale floors.
Nishiki Market Visit
Take a walk down Nishiki Market, a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Known as "Kyoto's Kitchen", this lively retail market specializes in all things food related, like fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware, and is a great place to find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood and sushi. Final stop today is Kiyomizu (Pure Water) Temple. From the 13m high veranda jutting out from the Main Hall you can enjoy amazing views of the whole of Kyoto, whilst pondering the fact that both the Main Hall and Veranda were built without the use of nails or any kind of joiners.
Day 13
Kyoto, Japan
Centrally Located Hotel In Kyoto Breakfast
Nara & Fushimi Inari Tour
Transfer from your hotel to Nara by train (45min) with a local guide. For 74 years during the 8th century Nara was Japan's capital and many of the temples and shrines built at that time still remain. Visit Todaiji temple, the world's largest wooden building and home to Japan's largest Buddha. Next stop is Nara's most celebrated shrine, Kasuga Taisha, established in 768 AD and famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns which have been donated by worshipers. Take a wander through Nara Park, called Deer park by locals due to the large population of more than 1,000 tame deer living there. On the way back from Nara, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, which was used in the movie “Memoirs of a Geisha”. It is home to over 10,000 red tori gates, which form a path up the mountain behind the temple.

Florence was amazing! Private cooking class & tours were marvelous, especially private tour of the Uffizi including rarely seen Vasari Corridor (built 1564 atop Ponte Vechio). Private tour to Siena & home winery with lunch was awesome. Can't rave enough about 8-day Florence stay including Hotel Bernini. Second week was totally different and not as memorable, but fascinating nonetheless: toured Bordeaux wine area on Viking River "cruise" which was more floating hotel than cruise (in comparison, 15-day cruise Amsterdam to Budapest on Viking Braggi last year was awesome!). Private tour of Hine Cognac house in Jarnac was outstanding as was trip to Saint Emilion to view top wineries. Final 3 days were in Paris (superb hotel: Grand Hotel du Palais Royal). Very private gourmet dinner cruise on Don Juan II (Yachts de Paris) was grand & pricey, but well worth it for scenic tour & luxury. Private guided driving tour of Normandy to pay our respects (14 hrs - top guide again) was excellent

We had several occasions when the transfers we had paid for did not materialize. We were double charged at one hotel. Was that because we never received the original vouchers. They were sent to the wrong address. The hotels were acceptable. The rail travel was substandard even though we supposedly had first class seats. The seating was open so that didn't help and the air conditioning was not working on two of the trains. The rental cars were in the wrong driver's name which caused problems and caused us to have to pay extra for another driver. We were not able to use one of our prepaid train tickets due to our flight being redirected to Rome rather than Milan. That was not Avanti's fault but none the less a problem.

Transfers from the port to hotel and hotel to airport were exceptional. Very well done. Tours in Rio were mixed. We weren't expecting full busloads of tourists and in one case the guide was trying to give the tour in four languages making it very difficult to align what we were seeing to his description. A problem with one bus lacking air conditioning was fixed quickly by getting a replacement bus. Seeing Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf were worth the trip.

We called our travel agent, Izumi Ogawa at Vision Travel, and even got her out of bed in the middle of the night! We were worried that the the transfer service, arranged by Izumi through Avanti, wouldn't be there when the delayed flight arrived. But we worried for nothing. Izumi assured us that Avanti keeps track of things like delayed flights and would be there for the pick up. She was absolutely right. The transfer service was there to meet the delayed flight and the last person in our group enjoyed an excellent ride in a luxurious van to our hotel. Many thanks to Izumi and Avanti.

Barcelona tour was great!

Our Avanti Barcelona Sightseeing Tour with Lunch was exciting. This tour was full of all things Barcelona! We definitely feel like we got the best highlights of this wonderful city. Our tour was actually divided into 2 tours with lunch in between the tours. Nothing on our voucher indicated this and it would have been nice to know so we would have known more how our day was structured. Our first tour guide Amalia, was very knowledgeable, bubbly and charasmatic! She was concerned about everyone on the tour and wanted us to have an enjoyable tour. We even went on a tram ride with a view overlooking Barcelona, an unexpected surprise. The afternoon tour guide was not as personable but was sufficient. Our tours consisted of bus transportation and walking tours. The main negative on this tour was that it ended in the middle of a busy street in Barcelona and we were not transported back to our Wamos tour location that we left from. We were all just left to find our way in a Foreign city!

The semi-private walking tour we booked in Florence was one of the best we've ever had. The package that was put together for us was wonderful. We experienced everything that we wanted to and definitely got every penny out of our trip. We stayed in 2 5-Star and 1 4-Star hotel/resort for much less than we would have expected and they were all in very beautiful and convenient locations. Our taxi/ferry/travel schedule was put together very well and easy to understand. The tours that we had were great experiences, really fun and helped us immerse ourselves more into the local culture and history. The only downside was that we were told that we would have a gift in the room included in the last hotel and that gift was not there - and the hotel did not know anything about it. Considering that was the only thing that was wrong with the trip though, it was pretty easy to overlook. It was still a very wonderful trip and we would definitely recommend Avanti Destinations to other travelers.

This is our second trip that our Advisor, Izumi Ogawa, used Avanti Destinations. And just like the last time, Avanti used top notch partners to execute their well thought out plans. And it doesn't seem to matter what part of the world they are focusing on. Our first experience with them was a trip to Europe and this time, on the opposite side of the globe, Indochina. From Italy, Switzerland, and France the first time to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos this time. It didn't faze them even a little bit. They only seem to have one speed...maximum performance! Even in a remote area like Luang Prabang, they provided a well spoken and knowledgeable guide to usher us for a full day on two wonderful tours...Tham Pak Ou Cave and Kuang Si Waterfalls. In the past we have been subjected to tour guides that were supposedly speaking English, but we weren't entirely sure. Not with the partners that work with Avanti. Not only very understandable but also personable and just plain nice. Great job Avanti.

As a whole the tours were fine. Well planned and very professional. I would however NEVER recommend the hop on/ hop off bus in London. London is so crowded we basically just sat in traffic 1/2 of our first of two days with a hop on/off pass. The narration of the "City Tours" bus left much to be desired. They just basically said "here is Buckingham Palace" no details or history etc. We finally decided to take the subway ourself and saw much more of London. People would be much better served by just buying an oyster pass and traveling on their own. The hop on/off tour in Edinbrugh was much better as that is not a crowded city and the tour was much more organized.

For the most part, we would recommend Avanti Destinations again for other travelers. We have used this company for travel before and by its reputation chose them for this trip. We had to work with them because our party consisted of two adults and a teen. Finding family accommodations was a bit more difficult. We suggest that this company secure more hotels that are geared toward travelling families. One hotel in Cordoba was particularly difficult to find as we were driving. The hotel, however, sent a young man to a location we could find, and directed my husband to the hotel. Outstanding!!!

I really do not know actually, never heard from or talked to anyone with them. There were a few issues with the train tickets etc. but we just figured it out. Would not pay for first class again on trains as we were unable to get our first class seats first because train was late and missed the second train and just had to jump on another and second because there was no indication of which train on the way to Pisa and apparently there were 2 within 15 mins, we got on first one which had no first class and stopped in every town - major pain - and did not know until too late. The second one apparently would have had our seats and been faster but it was very unclear. Also we LOVED the villa, but half way through our time there the Padrone showed up and was loud and rude and the wonderful caretaker disappeared when he was there and we had no recourse. ruined 2 days. had no way to get any assistance.

The hotels booked were as described. Ramon's Village was in need of renovations, with no TV in the rooms and noticeable wear. But the ability to book snorkeling and other tours made up for it. Roberts Grove in Placencia was our favorite, with the most friendly, accommodating staff. And the tour we took of the Monkey River was great. But mostly it was the people. The San Ignacio Hotel was the most luxurious, and was a beautiful setting. In addition, the tours from there were the best. They went off without a single hitch, and Fidelio, who was our guide on two tours was so very knowledgeable about the Mayans, and about the native plants and history.

Self Guided Tour In Scotland-"The Outlander Tour".

By: Ken B

We were very pleased with Avanti and the tour planned for us on the "Outlander" trip to Scotland. We started in Edinburgh and immediately began using the passes that were provided including the Bus Tour, Edinburgh Castle, the awesome Tea Room, and the Edinburgh Museum. I really thought both were great and the Heritage Pass was a great "bang for the buck" since we were able to use it in many places that were on the tour. The hotel accommodations were quite good for the most part. We were a bit let down with the hotel in Edinburgh but I believe that it would be very difficult to find an affordable hotel so close to the tourist sites there so I personally found the hotel OK especially with the nice breakfast. All the other places we visited and hotels were great and really put us in the mood to be in Scotland, seeing the amazing Scottish Highlands while also experiencing the remarkable history including the story of the Jacobites and the feeling of the Outlander movie. When we arrived at the Hotel Villajardin we were told that we had no reservation there and our luggage was not there. The man at the desk made a phone call and then said I know where your reservation and luggage are. They were at the Hotel Ferramentierro- across town! After a very long day of hiking, we were not happy to have to hike across the city to a different hotel. The hotel was fine as we were the accommodations and restaurant. Something shady was definitely going on their end with the reservation...The other was the cancellation of our trip home from Madrid due to "no crew", but we were eventually put on a different flight.

Avanti planned our recent trip’s hotels, transfers & tours in Paris, Venice & Rome. We were very happy with the folks who took care of our transfers from the airport, train, hotels & tours. They were all very professional & personable. The hotels were all very clean, the staff all very helpful & professional as well. The 1st 2 hotel rooms were a little on the small size but manageable. The 2nd 2 hotel room had a little more “elbow room” & felt a bit more comfortable. We enjoyed the breakfasts at the 2nd 2 hotels the most as they included eggs, sausage & bacon ...not just breads, cakes/cookies, yogurt, cold cereal & a little fruit. All our tours were small group tours with English speaking guides. In the case of the Louvre ended up being a personal tour for us...fabulous! All guides were very professional, well versed in their topics & cared to be sure you got your questions answered, photos taken & safely walked the tours together! Definitely recommend them!

The tours we took were ok. Paris had lots of driving in SUV's, and people in the middle seats do not see very much. One of the Paris driver had an accent that was just too difficult to follow. Also, on one of our excursions they tried to patch together participants from two different locations in a way that was impossible without making somebody sit and wait for a long time and then the entire tour was delayed so we wasted lots of time in rush hour traffic. The coach driver (don't try to find the buses - they are coached) in London had us walk down a long, complicated route at Windsor Castle and told us to be sure to keep track of the twists and turns so we could get back to the coach. Not easy, and we were in a big panic when we got lost. Hotel in Paris and event passes in London were great. It would be helpful if the subway material included more specifics about validating the passes and the nuances of getting through the entrance and exits of the turnstile in Paris, etc.

The itinerary was packed with a lot of experiences and we really enjoyed ourselves. The "Taste of Ireland" was truly that, a taste of almost everything the country had to offer. If it's your first time in country this is a good choice. On your second trip you can pinpoint where you want to spend more time. Most of the sites we visited were expecting us, as were the hotels. A couple of experiences you will need to call in advance, mainly the farms. And, don't travel too late into September as folks in Ireland are looking forward to the season ending and starting their holiday! The only thing I would change is the next to the last night (Galway). There was a longer road trip that day with 2 experiences. The hotel was on the other side of Galway making you have to navigate back through the city in the morning to get to your last 2 experiences. You also have to get to Dublin the same day making you feel rushed.

Disappointed in France

Our first tour was over 30 minutes late due to traffic that the driver was not made aware of in advance. This problem created another one for my sister traveling in a wheelchair. The driver had to park farther away due to a special event. Avanti was difficult to reach when our first hotel they arranged for us did not have air conditioning in all the rooms. I counted on my travel agent to help us and she did.
