With an early departure from Quito, your two-hour journey to the Otavalo Valley will take you through green rolling hills with snow-covered mountains in the background. You will visit charming artisan villages, such as Calderon, a small town where bread dough figurines are made in many shapes and sizes. Continue along the valleys of Guayllabamba and Cayame, with their dairy farms and rose plantations. Arrive for lunch at your selected hacienda where you will spend the night. In the afternoon visit the town of San Antonio de Ibarra, famous for woodcarvings; Cotacachi, known for fine leather products; and Peguche, where textiles are woven on old-fashioned shuttle looms. HOSTERIAS/HACIENDAS. Your overnight in Otavalo can be at any of the following: Hacienda Cusin is a fully renovated colonial hacienda 10 minutes south of Otavalo, at San Pablo del Lago. It has attractive rooms, most with fireplaces, and is furnished with colonial antiques. Dinners are served by candlelight Hacienda Pinsaqui dates back to the 1700's and has always been in the same family. It has 16 large comfortable rooms with a fireplace, furnished with antiques, including heavy ornate beds. Hosteria La Mirage is located next to the town of Cotacachi. It has elegant suites (each different), a full-service spa with pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, masseuse, and aromatherapy, plus five acres of landscaped gardens.

After breakfast, visit the Otavalo market, a kaleidoscope of colors. Famous for its textiles woven on back-strap and shuttle looms, you can buy tapestries, woven ponchos, brightly colored alpaca scarves, and hand-knit sweaters, as well as woodcarvings and paintings by local artists. The market is held daily, but it is largest on Saturdays.
