Sit back and enjoy a panoramic outing along the beautiful northern coast of Elounda with spectacular views of the Aegean Sea and Spinalonga Island as you head towards the picturesque Cretan village of Plaka nestled on the coast of Mirabello Bay. From here, you will set off in a traditional wooden fishing boat to the uninhabited island of Spinalonga. Once part of the island of Crete, it was later separated from the mainland and became a Venetian fortress before becoming a leper colony in 1903.
On reaching the famous island, you will explore the ruined 17th century fortress and the ancient buildings where lepers were relegated, before returning to Plaka to drive to the coastal town of Agios Nikolaos perched on top of a small mountain boasting stunning views all the way to the eastern tip of Crete.
Next, you will move on to the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera, renowned for its colorful frescoes dating back to the 14th century and then enter Kritsa, one of the most beautiful villages on Crete. Situated on the slopes of Kastellos and surrounded by olive groves, it boasts panoramic views over the gulf of Mirabello Bay and the surrounding villages, as well as having a long tradition of weaving, which you can see in local stores.
Crete is Greece’s largest island so pay special attention to the location of the tours you choose.
