Private Walking Tour of Colonial Yangon & Shwedagon Pagoda

This morning we have a Private Walking Tour of the Colonial Architectural Buildings.

Yangon retains one of the most complete ensembles of colonial architecture in the world. This walking tour in Yangon reveals some of the heritage buildings and the rich history of their functions up to the present day. During your walk you will be brought back to a different time and memories from the past will come alive

We transfer from your hotel to Yangon City Hall, located at the heart of the colonial-era city. Built in 1936 by Myanmar architect U Tin, it is a massive building with traditional tiered roofs, a combination of European design and engineering technology with traditional Myanmar flourishes. Nearby is the former Immigration Department. This building was designed in 1910 to be the country’s most upmarket department store, Rowe & Company. With its corner tower and top-floor balconettes, the structure retains an air of its former opulence. Proceed to the High Court, a 1911 brick building designed by the architect John Ransome, and another example of the grand Imperial style.

Continue to Strand Road, home of the former New Law Courts, built in 1931 with an imposing colonnade of Ionic columns. Next stop is the 1916 Custom House, a large building with an elegant white tower and double-faced clock above the entrance. The Art Deco period MPA is noted for its imposing square corner tower, wave-inspired stuccowork, and bas-relief sculptures of sailing vessels. The former Irrawaddy Flotilla Company’s graceful white building and colonnaded façade is another landmark.

Walk past the red brick General Post Office and back to the luxurious Strand Hotel, built in 1901 by the Sarkies brothers. Here you’ll enjoy well-earned refreshments (non-alcoholic) in the Bar.

After Lunch at the Hotel, this Afternoon we visit Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake to take photographs over the lake towards Karaweik Hall and Shwedagon. Then, continue visit Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the world’s most spectacular religious monuments.

The golden dome of the Shwedagon Pagoda rises 98 metres above its base and is covered with 60 tons of pure gold and is the very heart and soul of Buddhist Myanmar.

Make sure to spend time here watching the Burmese come to pray and make offerings; it is an unforgettable experience. After that return back to Hotel.

Day 3
Yangon, Myanmar
The Strand Hotel, Yangon Breakfast, Lunch

Yangon as a Local.

This morning we can visit some of the different types of markets. (to your interest) You will be able to experience the locals bargaining and trading their products in sometimes hectic atmosphere.

While Scott’s Market is a must for almost all tourists, some of the other markets like the Indian Market or the Vegetable & Fruit Market still kept their original vibe and a your visit will be a great opportunity to enlarge your impressions of an original Myanmar – Also the famous Bogyoke (Scott) Market (closed on Public Holidays) gives you the opportunity to see Myanmar's wide range of handicrafts.

After Lunch, at a local restaurant, we transfer to Yangon’s Central Station take a 30-45 minute train ride on the Circle Line. Opened in 1961, this slow moving, wooden seated and always crowded train carries an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people a day around the city.

This is life the way the locals live it, and it’s a great way to participate very naturally, be prepared to be thrown into the midst of local life, chat to curious travelers and stand for some of the journey with priority given to roof high sacks of vegetables heading to local markets.

On completion, we visit Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda to see a huge reclining Buddha image. Later we drive to the jetty along Strand Road and walk along Yangon River to see the busy harbor area, from where ferries leave for Pathein in the Delta and for upcountry towns along the Ayeyarwady River. Visit Botathaung Pagoda, located close to Yangon River and said to contain Buddha relics, before we return to hotel

Wonderful Trip to Southeast Asia!

By: smiller

Reviewed on: 29 Jun 2015

We just returned from an amazing 2 week long trip to Southeast Asia to include Thailand and Cambodia. Monika at Sixth Star travel helped with every step of the way--from air fare and schedules to hotels to events. If I had questions or changes, Monika was quick to respond and made sure the trip was as I wanted it. All of the details were covered, and we had a stress free phenomenal vacation that was memorable for everyone! I would highly recommend Monika and sixth star to my friends and family-- I felt like I was in good hands all the way, and knew that if I had an issue, Monika would be there to help!

Unfortunate Experience

By: Jeanne

Reviewed on: 10 Dec 2017

Unfortunately, our guide, while a lovely person, seemed totally out of his depth in Bangkok. His normal territory is Chiang Mai and Chiang Rei. I believe there must have been some issue with the normal Bangkok guide(s) and our guide was sent by the company to Bangkok to stand in for another who was unable to guide our group. The owner should probably have been the stand-in!

Nice tour of Thailand but average golf

By: David

Reviewed on: 03 Mar 2019

Had a very nice tour of Thailand with Wanna tours. My only complaint would be the selection of golf courses. We were in Thailand for golf primarily and sightseeing secondarily. The courses picked in my opinion were pretty average to below average. I am not sure if there are better courses but the ones chosen were not what would be considered the top courses to play in Thailand. The last course we played allowed sixsomes which meant a pretty slow round of golf. I don't think the company has done many golf trips in the past. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. The drivers did a nice job and things ran very smoothly.
