Day 1

Äkäslompolo Cabins Dinner

Day 1: Welcome to Lapland, transfer to Äkäslompolo village and build your first snowman

Transfer from Kittilä airport to Äkäslompolo village. In the late afternoon go for a walk to the supermarket where you will be able to purchase breakfast supplies for your cabin (choose your own supplies and pay for these locally). You will then be able to enjoy a relaxing breakfast in the comfort of your own each morning with your family before the day's activities.

Free time for relaxing in your cabin: light the fire, make a cup of tea and watch the kids make their first snowman. You have kick sledges, snowshoes and cross-country skis at your disposal, too which you get when you pick up your winter clothing. Cross country skiing tracks crisscross the village and can be used even during the early evening as some are lit up.

In the evening dinner at a local restaurant.

Enjoy your first evening in Lapland. With no light pollution and no noise you can truly feel the beauty of the Arctic night, admire the night sky and hopefully see the Northern Lights. Hear the silence of the wilderness and breathe in the cleanest air in Europe.

Day 2

Day 2: Day at a Reindeer Farm

After breakfast, bus transfer to a local reindeer farm. On our visit we will get close to these beautiful creatures. Your guide will tell you about reindeers, their indigenous Sami culture and life in the Arctic.

We will then have a short reindeer sleigh ride along a track through the forest. Afterwards, enjoy a warming soup lunch at the farm before heading back to Äkäslompolo.

In the evening dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3
Äkäslompolo, Finland

Day 3: Visiting Santa in Elämänluukku

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and spend the morning in relaxing in your cabin or outside.

In the early evening, transfer to Elämänluukku and be greeted by an old shaman who will introduce us to the Arctic Circle Crossing Ceremony. Outside there is plenty of fun snow activities - tandem skiing, snowshoe walking, kick sledging, tobogganing and children's snowmobiling. Decorate gingerbread cookies and make Christmas decorations in Elämänluukku, where we will also enjoy a late lunch.

Each family will receive an invite from Santa with your scheduled time for a visit. Visit to Santa's cabin starts with short snowmobile sleigh ride, followed by a short reindeer ride. Santa's cabin is in the forest and secluded and each family has a guaranteed private visit. Santa reads children's letters and each child receives a small gift from Santa.

Day 4
Äkäslompolo, Finland
Äkäslompolo Cabins Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Dogsledding and lunch at Snow Village

Today we will meet our doggy friends, the huskies. Bus transfer to a nearby husky farm where we are greeted by a bunch of friendly barking and yapping dogs, eager to get going! After a very important safety briefing, children will be placed in the guides’ sleighs and the parents will share a dog team. And off we go mushing through the snowy forest!

Later we will visit the Snow Village, a real master piece of ice & snow art with hotel rooms, snow bar and snow sculptures. After a soup, we will return to the Husky Farm and then continue back to our cabins in Äkäslompolo.

Day 5
Äkäslompolo, Finland

Day 5: Ice Fishing Safari & Snowmobiling

Today we will have a go at ice fishing and snowmobiling. After a snowmobile drive to a frozen lake you get to experience the traditional way of winter fishing – through a hole in the ice. We will enjoy wilderness lunch, and hopefully you'll be lucky enough to catch your own fish.

Rest of the afternoon free: curl up by the fire with your favourite book and enjoy the view of the winter paradise outside, or take a toboggan or snowshoes and head outside.

It is our last night in Lapland. Enjoy a farewell dinner, share stories and say goodbye to our new friends.

Unfamiliar

Given that 59 Deveees North is in Norway, they had no presence in Greenland whatsoever. While they were able to arrange the activities we requested, we had no single point person in Greenland. We felt on our own on a daily basis. This may have been due to a lack of personal experience with Greenland and more specifically the town where we visited. Since this is a national heritage site, I would have expected greater familiarity. However, we were able to fend for ourselves when neededttt

Ours was a complex itinerary and they came through. There were a few minor stumbles and one change initiated by us...but all were handled quickly and professionally. Overall a fantastic experience!

Did not get what we had hoped for overall on our trip to Iceland. The only part of our trip that was planned for us and we loved was at The Blue Lagoon. Did not get "guided" tours, got pick up and drop off at destinations. Planning done on own and helped put together by our agent was better than what 50 Degrees North did for us.

My travel agent worked directly with 50 North in planning our trip. I can say that all of our tours were professional and fun. Also, when the weather caused restrictions on some of the planned activities, the company was quick to find a suitable alternative. Everything was exactly as described to us and we had a fantastic trip!

Well planned, learned a lot

Hotels were very nice, tour operators were good, private guides were stellar and informative, particularly those with Mountain Guides. Would definitely use 50 Degrees North again. Only complaint was one tour operator (Artic Adventures) had buses that were so compact we all had to turn and leave our legs in the aisle, and I'm not tall. While the sites were beautiful and the tour guide knowledgeable, the long sardine-can bus ride was very difficult. Perhaps they were the only operators sending trips to our desired locations, unsure of that detail.

I would definitely use 50 Degrees North again. They planned our trip, which was perfect. There were 4 people in our group and they had something for all of us, and we all enjoyed everything we did. Leena our tour guide was absolutely wonderful. She made the walking tour a lot fun and we learned a lot. Hotels they choose were great and I couldn't have asked for anything more.
