Itinerary

DAY LOCATION(S) HOTEL MEALS DESCRIPTION
Day 1
Prague, Czech Republic
Mandarin Oriental, Prague None

Midday arrival into Prague, where you will be met by your driver for your transfer to the deluxe hotel in the center of the city and in the heart of the historic district.

Perhaps more than any other city in Europe, Prague has kept its pre-modern charm.  Spared the destruction of the Second World War, the ancient structures of the city still exist in their original state.  Prague is a walking city as it was designed over many centuries for the pedestrian and the horse.  The inner city lacks major avenues as found in Paris or Rome, giving the city its unique character.

Day 2
Prague, Czech Republic
Mandarin Oriental, Prague Breakfast

This morning your guide will meet you for a full day of touring the extraordinary museums of the Castle District and Hradčany.  The original castle (called Hradčany, pronounced Hra-tcha-nee) was founded in the early 14th Century, but it was rebuilt many times over the ages.  As it is much easier to walk down the steep Castle Hill, you will want to start at the top of the hill and the extraordinary Strahov Monastery.  When you first arrive at the monastery you will almost certainly be taken by the sweeping views it has to offer over all of Prague and the Vltava River.  The monastery was founded in 1140 and was one of the wealthiest and most prestigious of its time.  This wealth enabled the monks to create the greatest and most ornate library of the Middle Ages and it remains completely intact today.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience

VIP visit to the Strahov Monastery.  Here, you will be invited into the two main halls of the library (the Philosophical Hall and the Theological Hall).  These two halls are always viewed by the public through the narrow doorways at the end of each room, but you will be allowed to enter the rooms to walk alone among the ancient books and artifacts.

Your next stop going down Castle Hill will be at the Loretto, a 17th century religious ensemble of buildings and courtyards, including a baptistery, church and treasury.  It is here in the treasury that you can see the diamond-encrusted monstrances that demonstrate so vividly the wealth of the Lobkowics family that commissioned the complex.

Included today will also be a visit to the Prague Castle complex.  Here Maria Theresa commissioned the famous architect of the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Nicholas Pacassi, to design the interior of the complex.  This castle, designed with courtyards inside of courtyards, is a fascinating view into the lives of the Czech monarchy.  You will almost certainly want to step into the towering and wonderfully Neo-Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral inside the complex.

Later, your guide will take you into the Sternberg Palace to view the National Gallery’s collection of European art, including its important collection of Old Masters.  Here you will see the great names from Rembrandt to El Goya.

Your day will end in the Malá Strana or Little Quarter, which is best known for the Wallenstein Palace and Church of St. Nicholas.  Also, it is here in the Malá Strana that you will find many charming restaurants and unique shops full of Bohemian glass and the marionettes that are so famous in Prague.

Day 3
Prague, Czech Republic
Mandarin Oriental, Prague Breakfast

Today your guide will meet you in your hotel lobby at 10:00AM will and take you through Prague’s famous Jewish Quarter and the Old Town.  You will tour the historic synagogues, including the stunning Spanish Synagogue and the ancient Old-New Synagogue, which was built in the late 13th Century, making it the oldest synagogue still in use in Europe. Legend has it that the Golem created by the Prague’s most famous rabbi, Rabbi Loew, is hidden in its attic. While in the Jewish Quarter, you may decide to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, founded in the late 15th Century and still corresponding to its original medieval size. Over the centuries, more than 100,000 people are believed to have been buried here, the oldest tomb known being of the writer Rabbi Kara.

After your tour of the Jewish Quarter, your guide will take you into the famous Old Town Square, where you can see the Astrological Clock that has become the symbol of Prague.  Be sure not to miss the fairytale-like Old Town Hall Tower (1364) that stands above Old Town Square- you can even go to the top of the tower for a splendid view over the district.

Finally, you will enter New Town- which is new because it was only founded in 1348!  Here you can visit Wenceslas Square, were over the many centuries demonstrations of civil discontent have taken place. At the top of the square you will see the imposing building of the National Museum and the Monument to St Wenceslas, the patron of the Czech lands, by sculptor Josef Myslbek. Next you may want to walk the coronation route of Czech kings, the Royal Way, now a bustling pedestrian street lined with buildings from many different architectural periods.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience

This afternoon the famous Estates Theater will be opened only for you for an exclusive backstage tour of the theater where Mozart premiered Don Giovanni!  This is one of the true gems of European theaters, from the royal box to the wonderful ceiling frescos.  This tour is by appointment only and cannot be rescheduled to another time once confirmed.

Day 4
Prague, Czech Republic
Mandarin Oriental, Prague Breakfast

This morning, your guide and driver will meet you in the hotel lobby at 10:00AM and will transfer you to the Lobkowicz family castle in the village of Nelahozeves, picturesquely located on left bank of the Vltava river, about 30 miles north of Prague.

The village of Nelahozeves was purchased in 1544 by Florian Griespek, who at that time was the secretary and private counselor of the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech King Ferdinand I. The castle, which dates from the 1550s and was meant to be Griespek’s main residence, was built in a grand style to reflect his important position at the court.

The castle has and its interiors have since then been painstakingly restored and today it is used for large conventions and events, most notably the Dvořák Nelahozeves Music Festival, established in 1994. The entire second floor nowadays houses the permanent exhibition "Private Spaces, A Noble Family at Home” which will take you inside the former living quarters of the Lobkowicz Family. The Grand Drawing Room includes paintings by Brueghel, Rubens and Veronese, just to name a few.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience

You will be VIP guests at the Castle as you tour privately its extraordinary art exhibit - one of the largest and most significant private collections in Europe.

As time allows, you may also wish to stop at the Dvořák House Museum located nearby.

Afternoon at leisure for shopping and personal exploration in Prague.

Day 5
Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
Prague, Czech Republic
Carlsbad Plaza Breakfast

Morning departure to Karlovy Vary, located west of Prague, about 2 hours away.  Karlovy Vary is a city famous for its therapeutic hot springs and spas.  Since the Middle Ages, it became one of the most fashionable and popular spa towns in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, and royalty from all over came here in search of treatment.  Today your guide will take you through the town, visiting the Baroque St. Mary Magdalene Church in the center of town.  You will have the chance to see the 6th century fortress, the Mill Colonnade, the Market Colonnade and the Imperial Bath.

There are a number of excellent therapeutic spas – if you are interested in spending the afternoon visiting and actually experiencing one or two recommended spas, Exeter International will make the appropriate arrangements for your enjoyment.  Perhaps you may want to also experience one of the many hot water springs in the area, such as the Mariánské Lázně, which contains over 50 small springs.

In the afternoon, your driver and guide will take you out to the wonderful Teplá valley, which has one of the most fascinating monasteries in the Czech Republic. The picturesque valley houses the Monastic Library, Park, and the Hospice. The valley is also famous for the Abbey Church, which is one of the oldest churches in the Czech Republic.

Overnight in the Carlsbad Plaza, a luxurious five-star hotel, perfectly suited to cater to your every need.

Day 6
Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic
Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
Hotel Růže Breakfast

Today you will experience more of the Bohemian countryside as you travel to Český Krumlov.  Along the picturesque journey, you’ll see ancient castles and prominent monuments – your guide and driver will stop at Hluboká Castle en route.  This present-day Chateau was an early Gothic castle built around 1250.  In the 16th century, the Lord of Hradec, who bought the castle from King Ferdinand I, converted it into a Renaissance stately home.  The castle endured many changes throughout the century, but eventually became one of the most beautiful castles in Bohemia.  Today, in the former castle riding school, is a gallery that holds an impressive exhibition of Gothic paintings and statues as well as Dutch and Flemish art of the 17th and 18th centuries.

From the Hluboká Castle you will continue heading south before arriving at the charming town of České Budějovice.  Stop into an historic pub for a pint of the original Budweiser beer!  (Please note that all castles are closed in the Czech Republic on Mondays.)

Arrival into Český Krumlov and check into the historic and lovely Hotel Růže, set along the winding Vltava River.  Originally built as a Jesuit Monastery in the 16th century, the Hotel Růže, has been completely renovated into a deluxe hotel, yet retains all the original charm and spirit of the Renaissance.

We also highly recommend a visit to the very unique space that is the Egon Schiele art center.  They have a collection of works by Schiele, of course, but each year they have a special exhibition based on a changing theme.  2010 is the 120th anniversary of Schiele’s birth, so the center is planning exhibitions of contemporary Czech, Austrian and German artists.

Day 7
Prague, Czech Republic
Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic
Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague Breakfast

This morning you can explore Český Krumlov and the Český Krumlov Castle.  The center of this South Bohemian town offers stately Gothic and Renaissance houses, a wonderful square where the life of the town thrives – narrow, winding cobbled-stoned streets, dignified monasteries and churches and of course, the 13th century Rožmberk Castle – rich in history as well as arts and crafts that have been preserved throughout the centuries.  Don’t miss the splendid view in the castle garden of a large Baroque theater with period furnishings.

Afternoon departure by private car to Prague, an approximately 2.5 hour drive.  Overnight in Prague.

Day 8
Terezín, Czech Republic
Prague, Czech Republic
Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Prague Breakfast

To begin this morning, you’ll depart with your driver and guide to Terezín, approximately 30 miles north of Prague.

On the way from Prague, you can visit the New Jewish Cemetery. This Cemetery was established in 1891 when the Old Cemetery no longer had the space for the needs of the community. The cemetery is remarkable for its art nouveau tombstones with beautiful decorations. It is also here where the famous writer Franz Kafka was buried.

Just south of Terezín, you will visit the former Nazi concentration camp Theresienstadt.  The buildings of the camp originally served as barracks for Austrian soldiers during the 18th and 19th centuries, before being used by the Nazis as a concentration camp.

Exeter International Extraordinary Experience

A holocaust survivor will join you for your tour of Theresienstadt.  This amazing survivor will give you insight into life in the camp and the struggle for survival.

The Nazis used the town in an attempt to influence international opinion; they tried to create the image of a “spa town” – renaming the streets, painting buildings, establishing stores and parks.  The Ghetto Museum tells the tragic story of this town.  Spend time here as long as you feel necessary.

If you are interested, you may also wish to visit the town of Lidice, where your guide will show you around the museum, and the rose garden that was built as a memorial to the victims of the war. Lidice is the memorial site of a small Czech mining-town, where in June of 1942, all the men and boys over the age of 16 were shot (172 people in all), while the women and children were deported to Ravensbrück and Gneisenau concentration camps. The liquidation of Lidice was Hitler’s reprisal for the death of SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, the Deputy Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, who was assassinated in Prague on May 27th, 1942. The Nazis falsely accused the town’s residents for having aided the assassins.

Day 9
Prague, Czech Republic
None Breakfast

This morning, you will be privately transferred to the airport for your onward flight home.  Alternativly, spend a few more days in the Czech Republic to take in some of the other extrodinary castles and charming towns throughout the country.

We had basically positive experiences both days we toured with Exeter guides. The first day there was a little too much emphasis placed on taking us to "gift shops" and expecting us to buy tourist trinkets. The heat and the crowds may have been easier to bare if we had gone to the Hermitage in the early morning instead of wasting 45-50 minutes in a trinket shop. The second guide was very professional and led us seamlessly through Catherine's palace and the palaces on the canal in St. Petersburg.
