AFTERNOON - PRIVATE EXCURSION

SAN CRISTOBAL HILL, BELLAVISTA & LA CHASCONA MUSEUM

Begin this city tour crossing the Mapocho River - Mapocho mean water penetrating land in Mapundugun, the native language of the Mapuches - over to the Bellavista area, right below the San Cristobal Hill. The interesting and lively Bellavista area is home to many pubs, cultural centers and gastronomical mixes, creating a famous bohemian neighborhood, highly contrasting with the traditional and modern architrecture of the city.

Walking about Bellavista, you discover a peculiar shaped household, totally out of the ordinary. Its over-elaborated architecture invites you to learn more about it. It's the "La Chascona" Museum, the house that Pablo Neruda built for his lover and third wife, Dona Matilde Urrutia. The name "La Chascona" was given by Neruda in reference to the hair of his then secret lover until 1955. "Chascona" is used as a synonym for the word "unkempt", and the truth is that this is far from being a place where hairdos matter. The house shows the unique world where the remarkable Nobel Prize in Literature recipient used to live.

From here ascend the San Cristobal Hill to view the famous statue of Virgin Mary with a panoramic view of the city and the majestic Andes in the background.

MAGIC & ROMANTIC BUENOS AIRES: SAN TELMO, ZANJON DE GRANADOS & LA BOCA WITH CAMINITO & VISIT TO MUSEO EVITA

Begin the day with San Telmo, one of the most ancient & traditional districts in Buenos Aires. Part of the old town, it has maintained much of its architectural heritage. Its cobblestone streets, low buildings & courtyards, convey the image of a place stopped-in-time. Also noteworthy are the cafes, restaurants, tanguerias (tango bars) and the wide range of antique shops. At the heart of San Telmo lies Plaza Dorrego, the 2nd oldest square in Buenos Aires. On Sundays it is the setting of the most important open-air antique fair in the city.

Once in San Telmo the path will take us to Zanjon de Granados, a fascinating walk through the corridors and tunnels from the first foundation of the city, five centuries ago, & Casa Minima - the miniumum house. Only 2.5 meters wide & 13 feet deep, it has the distinction of being the narrowest in the city. Built in 1880, it was the residence of a typical Creole family named Ezeiza..

Continue with a visit to the Church and Cloister of St Ignacio & Manzana de Las Luces, a Jesuit church from 1675, today a National Historical Monument. Below the "manzana" runs a network of tunnels from the 17th & 18th centuries which joined buildings & churches from the city with the fort of Buenos Aires.

Continue on to La Boca, a neighborhood unique in it's architecture & culture. Historians explain the origins of an area filled with immigrants, tenement houses and football. Bohemians, painters, scuptures, musicians and singers were also attracted by this lively neighborhood immortalized by Benito Quinquela Martins' palette. Inside La Boca, & covered with paintings & sculptures, Caminito Street is one of the favorite walks of tourists & "portenos". It is surrounded by typical La Boca houses, painted sheet metal walls of different colors. Its winding route is because it follows a stream that flowed until the beginning of the 20th century.

En route you will visit the Evita Museum which houses the Eva Peron Historical Research Institute and is presided over by Evita's grand-niece, Cristina Alvarez Rodriguez. It tells of the life & work of one of the most important women in Argentine history.

We have traveled to South America on several occasions and have used Ladatco (Michelle) to set up our tours/itineraries.  We have always felt like we saw the MOST interesting things that were especially geared for the interests of our group members.  We also think our schedules have made the most use of our time, money and logistics.  I highly recommend Ladatco to plan a South American vacation.

Very good trip and service. Was where they needed to be at all times. Provided very good drivers and guides, spoke English well, wee flexible with our desires, and gave us consistent guides that got to know our family. Coordinated well with our overall trip planner. Trip was great and the guide provided a lot of local color with our trip -- as sometimes we like to go off the beaten track and experience more local places. Perfect fit for our family.

Ladatco did a great job putting together our trip. Our local guides were really great. The Gourmet Food tour in Lima was a wonderful way to start our trip! One of the owners, Samantha, was our guide and gave us a culinary experience to remember. Our guide, Ramiro, with Metropolitan Tours, was so knowledgeable and so passionate about Peruvian history and the time of the Incas! we really enjoyed our time with him and learned so much from him. The visit to the Quillot village was an experience we will never forget. And, of course, Macchu Picchu and the other Incan ruins were awe-inspiring. The second Ramiro, in Quito, was another wonderful guide. We loved our hotels and wished we had more time to enjoy the amenities of Hotel B in Lima, the Sol y Luna in the Sacred Valley and Casa Gangotena in Quito. The Petrel is a beautiful small ship with an excellent crew. Our naturalist, Nico Andrade, was just great. He was knowledgeable, funny and kept us busy! The food was just OK.
