Founded in the 9th century, Fez reached its height in the 13th–14th centuries under the Marinids, when it replaced Marrakesh as the capital of the kingdom. The urban fabric and the principal monuments in the medina – madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains - date from this period. The Fez medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is believed to be the world's largest contiguous car-free urban area. Amongst the many monuments it cherishes is Al-Qarawiyyin, which was founded in AD 859 by a woman, and is the oldest continuously functioning university in the world.
