Fontainebleau started life as a fortified castle in the middle Ages, becoming a palace in the time of François I. It is the only chateau to have been continuously inhabited for eight centuries. The park dates from the time of Henri IV. The magnificent flowerbeds, the Diana’s garden and the English garden were designed by Le Nôtre. The English garden: François I had pine trees planted and a grotto built in the Italian style, which was popular at the time. Today there are no pines left, but plenty of plane and cypress trees. The place takes its name from the Bliaud (or Blaut) spring, which flows into a basin in the middle of the garden. There is a children’s area with games. The flowerbeds: These were created at the time of François I and completely redesigned by Le Nôtre. The fountains of Tiber and Romulus are found here.
