Luther – 500 years of cultural history (4 days)

Day 1
Erfurt, Germany
None None

Guided city walk through Erfurt on the footsteps of Martin Luther – A tour through the life of the great reformer including a visit of the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived as a monk and of the cathedral St. Mary.

There are important roots of Martin Luther’s theology and the reformation in Erfurt, from where he studied from 1501 until his entrance to the Augustinian Monastery in 1505. The complete transformation from student to monk, which took place in Erfurt, did indeed mark the beginning of one of the greatest and momentous conversions in the history of the church.

Guided city tour includes the almost completely preserved Old Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in central Europe, the old town hall and the Petersberg Citadel.

Day 2
Eisleben, Germany
None None

Guided city walk in Eisleben to the Luther memorials (UNESCO World Heritage Site) such as Luther's birthplace and the Museum "House of Luther's Death”

Eisleben is not only one of the oldest towns between the Harz Mountains and the river Elbe but is the place where Martin Luther came into this world and also left it. The house where he was born and the house where he died, two of the sites most closely associated with the life and works of Martin Luther, have been announced UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1996. Other places with connections to Luther can also be found in the town

Day 3
Wittenberg, Germany
None None

Guided visit of the Luther House, former Augustinian monastery and later residence of Martin Luther.

The Luther House was originally in 1504 an Augustinian monastery. Later it became the home of the reformer Martin Luther. Today, the Luther House is the largest Reformation Museum in the world and is also on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Guided visit of the Melanchthon House

The Melanchthon House was built in 1536 in the Renaissance style and is an architectural gem. The humanist Philipp Melanchthon lived and worked here until his death. Today, the Melanchthon House is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Excellent guide and driver

The guide was a former West Berlin native and spoke perfect English (well, the Queen's English anyway). He was knowledgeable, informative, and interesting. Our driver also spoke English and had grown up in East Berlin. He told us a bit of his story growing up. They were an excellent team and we really enjoyed our tours with them.

Alpine FIS Event and Garmisch

The Obermuhle in Garmisch was the best service I've ever had at a small village hotel. These folks even picked us up at the train station when the taxi wait was too long. I'd go back just to stay at this hotel and ski Garmisch.
