Break away from the crowds of Skagway for some kayaking in a true naturalist’s paradise—Haines, Alaska. The trip begins with a 45-minute shared fast ferry ride along the steep-walled fjords that connect Skagway to Haines. Your guide will acquaint you with the history of Lynn Canal as you look for humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles.
Upon arrival in Haines, you’ll drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park, which boasts important Tlingit cultural sites, a salmon-filled river, and a turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Keep an eye out for wildlife; bald eagles, brown bear, and migratory birds are often seen here.
Once you arrive at the lake, take in the scenery and board your sea kayak. Sea kayaking is easy to learn and your expert guide will show you the basics of paddling. Outfitted with the proper gear, you’ll soon be gliding silently along the shores of the lake. This pristine lake is uncrowded and the scenery is spectacular. Huge waterfalls spill off the cliffs surrounding the lake, lush green forests crowd the shoreline, and wildlife abounds. Depending on the season, sockeye salmon may be spawning, eagles may be nesting, wildflowers may be at their peak, and brown bears may be feeding. Your guide will do their best to give you the wildlife-viewing opportunity of a lifetime, all from your kayak.
Afterwards, relax and enjoy lunch at the Pilot Light Restaurant, where owner, Cambria Goodwin, featured on “Cupcake Wars”, serves a tasty meal featuring her signature salmon bisque soup, Caesar salad, home-baked bread, and of course, dessert.
Return to town and board the shared fast ferry for your journey back to Skagway with memories and photographs from an unforgettable adventure.
