Lombok: 4-Day Mount Rinjani Hike, Indonesia (4 days)

Day 1
Sembalun, Indonesia
None Dinner

To begin your four-day journey, you’ll be picked up at your hotel in Mataram or at Lombok Airport and be transferred to Sembalun Village. Here, you will camp for the night or enjoy a homestay with one of the local families. Sembalun Village is a picturesque rural outpost in the fertile foothills of Rinjani Mountain, located 5,600 feet above sea level. The valley comprises lush green rice terraces and a patchwork of crops, and it is the perfect launch point for treks to the peak of Mount Rinjani. The traditional village here has been restored, offering travelers a glimpse into local history.

Day 2
Plawangan Sembalun, Indonesia
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You’ll start early today and set off straight after breakfast, trekking to the Plawangan Sembalun campsite. You’ll first pass through flat grasslands of grazing cattle, with the landscape growing more hilly and challenging as the day progresses. It’s a picturesque journey that holds the peak of Mount Rinjani constantly in view - a motivating sight, considering the day’s hike will take from eight to ten hours. The Plawangan Sembalun campsite is located on a ridge that offers a spectacular view of Rinjani peak when the clouds dissipate. You’ll camp here overnight.

Day 3
Segara Anak Lake, Indonesia
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

You’ll get up in the predawn hours today in order to reach Mount Rinjani peak by sunrise. At your destination, you’ll relax with hot tea and snacks as you watch the sun rise over Segara Anak crater lake and Gunung Baru peak in its center. After relazing with this remarkable view, you’ll hike to the base camp for brunch then make your way to the Segara Anak Lake campsite, located inside the caldera. Mount Rinjani crater is more than six kilometers in diameter, a landscape of steep scrub-covered slopes and lush vegetation. The campsite is located right next to the lake, a tranquil spot where you can swim, explore caves or take a therapeutic dip in hot springs.

Day 4
Mataram, Indonesia
None Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, you’ll depart the campsite and hike to the west rim of Mount Rinjani, where you can take a final glimpse of the crater lake. From here, you’ll descend to Senaru Village. Senaru is a beautiful town with thick rainforest and waterfalls - well worth exploring for travelers who wish to extend their stay. From Senaru, you’ll be transferred to the airport or back to your hotel in Mataram.

The Remote Lands Guides were excellent. The cars used for transportation were roomy and clean. The hotels were 5 star and their attention to detail was over the top. There was only perfection from the people we met and it was also comforting to know that our trip was being carefully monitored by Remote Lands supervisors every step of the way. We would recommend Remote Lands to anyone needing exceptional service in Asia.

We had 4 different guides (one in each city) and they were all wonderful. We appreciated that they let us be flexible and make game time decisions. We skipped a lot of the "touristy" sites and felt we had a more authentic experience.

Excellent. Guides at each location were friendly, personable and knowledgeable. Want to share a special thank you to Nadia Thakul (Bangkok) & Mr. Buntheun (Siem Reap). After missing my connecting flight from Shanghai to Siem Reap, I called Mr. Buntheun to let him know I was not able tomake it to Siem Reap as planned and for him to notify the hotel. I was flying instead to Phnom Phen and would notify him later of my flight to Siem Reap. Upon arrival in Phnom Phen as I was filling out my visa on arrival form, a Remote Land guide greeted me and told me that Mr. Buntheun had notified the Bangkok office of my predicament and sent him to greet me. As you can imagine being in a foreign land in an unplanned location he was a sight for sore eyes. He got me in contact with Nadia who then took care of the rest of the accommodations (hotel, transportation to/from airport and flight from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap the next day). Assistance provided by Remote Lands got us to Siem Reap on time.
