Selva Negra Breakfast

Today you will head northward towards the cool central highlands of the country, passing clay-tiled adobe houses and small farms. This area is the "bread-basket" of the country, producing a wide variety of vegetables, corn, beans, flowers and of course "black gold" - coffee! Arrive at Selva Negra; Nicaragua's answer to Germany's Black Forest situated some 4000 ft. above sea level. The area was settled by German immigrants who developed the country's first coffee plantations. Originally called "La Harmonia," today Selva Negra is still owned by the third and fourth generation of the Kuhl and Hayn families. The farm also raises livestock, has numerous nature trails, and boasts 200+ species of birds.

Day 3

This morning you will enjoy a coffee tour at Selva Negra, an excellent opportunity to learn all about the most popular morning drink in the world. You will be surprised how much goes into delivering that fresh cup of coffee. The tour will introduce you to the entire coffee cycle from seed to cup. This afternoon is at leisure to explore the trails. There’s a trail for everyone at Selva Negra, from seniors to intrepid adventurers. Regardless of the path you chose, prepare to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of pure nature.

Day 4
Matagalpa, Nicaragua
León, Nicaragua
El Conventro Hotel Breakfast, Lunch

Today you will leave this tranquil setting and head to the “cultural” heart of the country, Leon. Visit the highlights of this colonial city including the main churches and the Cathedral, the largest in Central America, located at the main square. Visit the Ruben Dario Museum (Nicaragua's famed poet) and the Ortiz Gurdian art center, with art objects dating from the 16th century to contemporary times with works from the Austrian, Peruvian, and Ecuadorian schools. (Museum is closed on Mondays.) Lunch will be at a local restaurant today. Settle in for a two night stay at the El Convento Hotel.

Day 5
León, Nicaragua

Morning visit to Isla Juan Venado Nature Reserve, an important protected area forming part of the country's national park system and a vital coastal wetland region. On arrival at Las Peñitas beach, your guide will lead you to where you will board your motor boat for an exciting two hour ride. Juan Venado is considered a barrier island separating the coast from the island and is an ecologically important mangrove forest or swamp. This marvelous biological zone provides the ideal home for an abundance of animal life, particularly marine creatures. The edge of the Juan Venado island which faces the Pacific Ocean possesses a fine estuary and is also a vital nesting site for Olive Ridley sea turtles (from May to November). The estuary of Isla Juan Venado is itself home to a diversity of animals including water birds, the cayman, crocodiles, iguanas, crustaceans and more. Lunch is included, then return to your hotel in Leon.

Today you will travel to the charming colonial city of Granada on Lake Nicaragua. En route you will stop at the Masaya National Park and the volcano of the same name. As you enter the park stop at the Environmental Interpretation Center, where you learn about the tectonic plates and various world volcanic regions plus the flora and fauna of this refuge. Continue right up to the crater of the volcano and stare into it. Just about 15 minutes from the park, stop at the Masaya arts and craft market. Here you find some of the country’s best handicrafts, ceramics, wood, leather goods, wicker furniture and what some say are the best hammocks in the world. Lunch will be included en route today. Continue on to Granada and the Plaza Colon for a two night stay.

Day 7

Full day excursion beginning with a visit to the Mombacho Volcano, situated in a beautiful cloud forest and home to a variety of vegetation and wildlife. After a drive to the top, you will explore this impressive volcano on a guided walk. The well kept Crater Trail leads you around the crater through dense cloud forest to enjoy spectacular views overlooking Granada, Las Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and the Masaya Volcano. Spend the rest of the day exploring Granada city, founded in 1524. Today the city retains its colonial charm by maintaining its architecture from the Spanish period and is in the process of being cited as a UNESCO “Heritage of Mankind", Highlights include La Merced Church, the quaint Main Plaza and San Francisco Convent. Lunch will be included in the city during the day’s excursion.

Day 8
Granada, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge, Nicaragua
Jicaro Island Ecolodge Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Transfer to the Asese port to board the lodge’s boat for a short ride to the Jicaro Island Ecolodge, for a two night stay. Jicaro is located on a private island on Lake Nicaragua, a secluded island getaway and a high-end nature resort. It is ideal for a perfect combination of relaxing, revitalizing and exploring the flora and fauna that this tropical paradise offers. Nine private casitas serve as the setting for a relaxing escape filled with peace and tranquility.

Day 9

Day at leisure to relax on the island or lodge staff can assist you in arranging an optional activity such as bird watching, kayaking, zip lining or hiking.

Day 10

Ometepe Island, Nicaragua
Totoco Lodge Breakfast

This morning the lodge’s boat will take you back to the Asese port where your local host will meet you and transfer you to the San Jorge Port for ferry crossing to the port of Moyogalpa, Ometepe Island. Meeting on arrival and transfer to the Totoco Lodge for a two night stay. This afternoon you can enjoy one of the island’s most popular activities, kayaking at the Istiam River. Paddle by the lake shore and its beach to the mouth of the river. Here you can appreciate the variety of birds, monkeys, turtles, “cujipal”, a type of caiman native to the islands, as well as the plant life typical of this wetland ecosystem.

Day 11
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua
Totoco Lodge Breakfast

Morning tour of Ometepe Island known for its beautiful landscapes, two volcanoes, a rich archeological background, relaxing beaches and its numerous natural reserves and forests. Visit the Numismatic & Pre-Columbine Museum, the natural reserve Charco Verde and the Ojo de Agua crystalline spring waters. Also visit the city of Altagracia, the second largest village on Ometepe Island. Afternoon at leisure to explore on your own.

Day 12

San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua
Morgan's Rock Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Morning transfer to the Moyogalpa Port for ferry crossing to the San Jorge Port. From here your local guide will transfer you to the area of San Juan del Sur for a relaxing three night stay at a quiet beach area and your hotel Morgan’s Rock.

This morning your local host will drive you back (3-4 hours) to your hotel in Managua. Afternoon tour of this historic capital. Founded in 1852, the old city center lies to the north and was destroyed in the 1972 earthquake. The southern part of the city is the future downtown of Managua where most of the investments are made. Highlights include the National Historic Park Loma Tiscapa, the ruins of the old presidential palace, Park of Peace (with remnants of the 1980’s civil war), Palace of Culture, New Presidential House, “El Malecon” bordering Lake Managua, and the National Theater Ruben Dario (the country’s famed poet). Overnight at the Elements Hotel Boutique.

We have traveled to South America on several occasions and have used Ladatco (Michelle) to set up our tours/itineraries.  We have always felt like we saw the MOST interesting things that were especially geared for the interests of our group members.  We also think our schedules have made the most use of our time, money and logistics.  I highly recommend Ladatco to plan a South American vacation.

Hotels and airline arrangements worked well. Two flight delays. Guide on Easter Island was excellent and we received an extra tour the day we arrived that was not on the plan but was very welcome.

Sports Tours of Santiago provided a great guide, Alvaro Gonzalez, and the hotels and resorts were wonderful. I appreciated them negotiating reasonable single supplements for the accommodations.

Very good trip and service. Was where they needed to be at all times. Provided very good drivers and guides, spoke English well, wee flexible with our desires, and gave us consistent guides that got to know our family. Coordinated well with our overall trip planner. Trip was great and the guide provided a lot of local color with our trip -- as sometimes we like to go off the beaten track and experience more local places. Perfect fit for our family.

Ladatco did a great job putting together our trip. Our local guides were really great. The Gourmet Food tour in Lima was a wonderful way to start our trip! One of the owners, Samantha, was our guide and gave us a culinary experience to remember. Our guide, Ramiro, with Metropolitan Tours, was so knowledgeable and so passionate about Peruvian history and the time of the Incas! we really enjoyed our time with him and learned so much from him. The visit to the Quillot village was an experience we will never forget. And, of course, Macchu Picchu and the other Incan ruins were awe-inspiring. The second Ramiro, in Quito, was another wonderful guide. We loved our hotels and wished we had more time to enjoy the amenities of Hotel B in Lima, the Sol y Luna in the Sacred Valley and Casa Gangotena in Quito. The Petrel is a beautiful small ship with an excellent crew. Our naturalist, Nico Andrade, was just great. He was knowledgeable, funny and kept us busy! The food was just OK.
