The Precious Stones Institute or “Opificio delle Pietre Dure” was born at the behest of Ferdinand I de 'Medici as a manufactory for processing furniture semi-precious stones. The Museum is today a modern center that specializes in the restoration, is a direct subsidiary of artistic craftsmanship characterized the treatment of stones, which was officially founded in 1588 by Ferdinand I de 'Medici. You will have the chance to feel the art of the stones thanks to an expert and professional Curator and Restorer that will show you all the processing techniques to immerse yourself completely in the world of precious stones. After the Opificio visit you will continue your way through Florence’s jewels of Medici Family. The Medici Chapels in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, Florence comprise two structures added to Brunelleschi's original design, each intended to celebrate the power of the Medici as Grand Dukes of Tuscany. One is the Sagrestia Nuova, the "New Sacristy", designed by Michelangelo. The other is the Capella dei Principi, the 16th and 17th-century "Chapel of the Princes", which is entirely covered with a revetment of colored marbles inlaid with pietra dura.
