During the Italian Renaissance, Florence acquired its renaissance palaces and squares, turning it into a living museum. Many squares exhibit famous statues and fountains. Florence is also a city of incomparable indoor pleasures with its chapels, galleries and museums which represent an inexhaustible treasure. One of the oldest and most famous art museums of the Western world is the Uffizi Gallery, which houses works by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Other great art museums include the Pitti Palace, Galleria dell'Accademia and Palazzo Vecchio. Florence is also home to some of the biggest churches in Italy, including the famous Duomo of Florence, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria Novella and Santa Croce. You can walk across Piazza della Signoria an L-shaped square in front of the Palazzo Vecchio that is the focal point of the origin and of the history of the Florentine Republic and still maintains its reputation as the political hub of the city. The Ponte Vecchio - a Medieval bridge over the Arno River noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops but nowadays tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers.
