Catania Orientation Tour
You will meet your Professional Driver and Guide at ship dock or at tender mooring; they will wait for you handling the Onirikos arrival board and they will introduce you to a wonderful and typical South Italian City: Catania.
Most of Catania's wide streets and majestic palaces were built during the Baroque period in the eighteenth century after the city was devastated by Mt Etna's eruptions in 1669 and 1693.
The principal architects involved in the reconstruction transported the city from its medieval roots creating wide avenues, elegant buildings, squares with splendid churches and monasteries which produce a magnificent black and white effect. You will visit the real heart of Catania, the Roman Amphitheatre, built using basaltic dark lava stones and at a lower level than the baroque town. You will enjoy a special baroque atmosphere having endless promenades through Catania’ s architectural masterpieces. Your professional Guide will introduce you to three thousand years of foreign dominations on the island. You will see archaeological ruins showing you the layers below the baroque town, dating back to the Roman period, the University Palace with its lovely courtyard decorated with Etna pebble mosaic, The Cathedral, two of the “Seven Doors” protecting S. Agatha's treasure and the famous “candelora”, in full silver sculptured by hands and carried on people's shoulders all around the town during the patron saint's celebration week. You can also find an abundance of quaint shops, boutiques, great restaurants, a colorful and picturesque open market and very tempting cafeterias, with unique Sicilian ricotta or almond and pistachio cookies or traditional ice-creams.
After the visit your d will escort you back to the Port.
