Half Day Monreale Orientation Tour
You will meet your guide at ship dock or at tender mooring; he will wait for you handling the Onirikos arrival board.
The guide will introduce you to your driver. They will escort you in to Monreale in order to enjoy a unique experience.
Monreale's cathedral and abbey are good reminders that the beauty of a splendid church transcends the single art work, however noble. Set at about three hundred meters above sea level, the town overlooks the "Conca d'Oro". The cathedral and its cloister represent the largest concentration of Norman, Arab and Byzantine art in one place.
The exterior of Monreale's Duomo is pleasant enough, but gives no indication of the golden splendor within. The west facade has two towers, only one of which was finished. The Neoclassical portico was added in the 18th century. Far more interesting is the exterior of the apse, richly decorated with interlaced arch and circle designs made of marble and tufa. It is well worth walking around back for a clear view from Via Archivescovado.
The undisputed highlight of Monreale Cathedral is it’s richly mosaic interior. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, the golden mosaics completely cover the walls of the nave, aisles, transept and apse - amounting to 68,220 square feet in total. The mosaic cycle is second only to the Hagia Sofia in size, and much better preserved. Some of the mosaics were created by craftsmen brought from Venice.
After the visit your driver will escort you back to the Port.
