Palermo – the capital of Sicily hosts International puppet museum "Antonio Pasqualino".
Established in 1975 by the Association for the preservation of popular heritage, the museum collects over 3500 items from all over the world. Among the museum’s various initiatives, particular attention is given to the theatrical project aimed both at the production of innovative shows and the preservation of the traditional opera dei pupi, the Sicilian puppet play.
The opera dei pupi is the marionette theatre of Southern Italy and is made of three separate traditions: Palermo, Catania and Naples. The Palermitan puppets are 80 centimeters tall, have jointed knees and are manipulated from the side of the stage. The subjects are lengthy chronicles presented in installments over a period of many months and based on epic-chivalrous literature, most particularly on the Carolingian chronicle. The repertoire also included the lives of bandits and saints, historical events and Shakespearean dramas. The show of the day was traditionally advertised using decorated panels. In Palermo they were painted on canvas and divided into squares, usually eight, which depicted various scenes.
After the Museums visit you will enjoy a private show at the International puppet museum "Antonio Pasqualino" Theatre. The traditional opera dei pupi will be perfumed just for you.
After the visit your driver will escort you back to the Port.
