Itinerary

Day 1
Killarney, Ireland

Hotel: The Killarney Park
Meals: Dinner

You are met upon arrival at Shannon Airport by a representative and transferred by private vehicle to the Killarney Park Hotel. The town of Killarney is known as the ‘home of beauty’ thanks to its dramatic setting, with the Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, the highest mountains in Ireland, dominating the skyline.

This evening, you are transferred by private coach to Muckross House and Traditional Farms, a magnificent Victorian estate that sits on its own promontory, with sweeping views of the mountains. Enjoy a private tour of the house itself, and then visit the adjacent farms where the life and crafts of rural Ireland in earlier times is vividly portrayed. This evening you enjoy a rustic ‘Welcome to Ireland’ dinner.

Day 2
Killarney, Ireland

Hotel: The Killarney Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave Killarney this morning and drive the short distance to Kate Kearney’s Cottage, sitting at the entrance to the Gap of Dunloe. This natural chasm through Macgillycuddy’s Reeks has long been traversed by local farmers and their horse-drawn jaunting carts. Travel by cart through the Gap, enjoying the scenery as far as Lord Brandon’s Cottage, where a barbeque lunch will be waiting.

Return to Killarney by boat in the afternoon. Lord Brandon’s Cottage lies near the head of the Upper Lake of Killarney. Small open-top boats bring you across this lake and then down the river to the Middle (or Muckross) Lake, and thence across the large expanse of Lough Leane. The journey ends at Ross Castle, a fine medieval tower house that is just a short drive from the hotel.

This evening you drive to Tralee to attend a performance at Siamsa Tire, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland. Here the company portrays life in rural Ireland in earlier times, through the medium of mine, dance and traditional music. Dinner is enjoyed at the nearby Galleon Restaurant or one of the associated private dining rooms at the Brandon Hotel.

Day 3
Kenmare, Ireland

Hotel: The Merrion Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Pay a visit to Kenmare, one of the prettiest little towns in this part of Ireland. Built around a triangle of streets, the pretty houses and stores of the town centre have been attractively decorated in a variety of colours. From the harbour, take a 2-hour ‘seafari’ trip by boat into Kenmare Bay. This bay is renowned for its seal population, which is the largest in Ireland.

After lunch at a local restaurant, take a trip to the famous sub-tropical gardens of Ilnacullin. Drive over the spectacular Caha Mountains to Glengarriff, where you board the boat for Garinish Island, where the gardens are located. Here you have time to see the Italian-style layout, in which a wide variety of shrubs and plants have been cultivated in the warming influence of the Gulf Stream.

For those who wish to golf, tee times have been reserved at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. One of the most beautifully located of all Irish golf clubs, there are three golf courses on this site that offer a challenge.

Later this afternoon, travel to a local airport where you board a privately-chartered plane to take you to Dublin. On arrival at Dublin airport, you are privately transferred to the Merrion Hotel to freshen up after your journey. This evening you enjoy a formal dinner in the ornate private dining rooms of the hotel.

Day 4
Dublin, Ireland

Hotel: The Merrion Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
This morning, take a city tour of Dublin in a most unusual vehicle. Your 'tour bus' is over fifty years old and is a surviving amphibious truck that was first produced during World War II. Its official name was DUKW but it is affectionately referred to as the "Duck". During the tour, the captains explain all about how the Vikings first settled in Dublin over 1000 years ago, through its modern status as a thriving, cosmopolitan European city. The highlight of the Tour is when the captain drives the Viking Splash Vehicle into the waters of the historic Grand Canal Basin.

Later visit the world-famous Guinness Storehouse, where you meet a member of the Guinness team to hear the story of this most famous of Irish exports, as well as learning the art of pulling the perfect pint. Your introduction to Irish stout is followed by lunch, served in one of the spectacular private rooms.

On the way back to the hotel, stop to visit Trinity College Library to see the Book of Kells, arguably the most famous medieval illuminated manuscript from Europe. See the beautiful colours on the vellum pages, which have survived in pristine condition over the years. Walk back to the hotel from here. You may wish to have some more refreshments in one of the traditional Dublin pubs that cluster around Duke Street.

This evening your tour director accompanies you to Old Jameson’s Distillery to see where barley was once converted into a warming elixir in earlier times. After taking a tutored tasting of Irish whiskey, you are privately entertained to dinner at the famous ‘Shindig’ evening. This spectacle offers a fine display of Irish music and dancing in traditional and modern styles, which you may like to join in with!

Day 5
Dublin, Ireland

Hotel: None
Meals: Breakfast

You are privately transferred to Dublin airport for your departure flight.
