Enjoy a picturesque drive to Lamia, where the Battle of Thermopylae – “the Alamo of Greece” - took place during the Greece-Persia war in 480 BC. Some 30 city-states of central and southern Greece met in Corinth to devise a common defence (others, including the oracle at Delphi, sided with the Persians). They agreed on a combined army and navy under Spartan command, with the Athenian leader Themistocles providing the strategy. The Spartan king Leonidas led the army to the pass at Thermopylae, the main passage from northern into central Greece, where their heroic battle with the Persians was lost.

A monument was built to commemorate the battle and is located at the center of the pass, where the final phase of the battle took place, as is attested by the accumulation at the foot of the hill of iron and bronze spearheads. The monument stands opposite the historical hill of Kolonos and represents Leonidas in full armour. It was designed by B. Phalereus, and was erected in the 1950s at the expense of Greeks living in America.

On the hill of Kolonos, members of the Amphiktyony erected a stone statue of a lion in memory of the deceased warriors, with an epigram written by Simonides, but the monument is not preserved today.

DEPOSITS & PAYMENTS

Deposit: Upon confirmation and written acceptance of services an initial deposit equivalent to 30% of the total amount of final billing is to be sent to GREECE A LA CARTE within 7 days, with the exception of airline or ferry passage which must be paid in full prior to issuing tickets. Final payment is to be received no later than 30 days prior to clients’ arrival in Greece.

CANCELLATION POLICY

In the event of cancellation, written notice must be received.

a. Cancellations made from the moment deposits payments are received and up until 30 days prior to the client’s arrival, will be subject to a 10% administrative cancellation fee.

b. In the event we are notified that the clients wish to cancel their travel services within 29 days of departure, the following cancellation fees will apply

c. Within 29-22 days prior to arrival 20% of the total amount

d. Within 21-7 days prior to arrival: 50% of the total amount

e. Within 7-2 days prior to arrival: 75% of the total amount

f. Within 48 hours prior to arrival: 100% of the total amount

g. Non Show: 100% of the total amount

h. Airline/Ferry Tickets 100% of the total amount

NB: In addition to the above mentioned cancellation fees, which are levied to cover administrative expenses, any non-refundable deposits charged by our suppliers and prepaid in full by GREECE A LA CARTE on behalf of clients, will be collected. These charges will be levied regardless of reason for cancellation.

NB: Credit card charges will be processed in Euro local currency of Greece and the company will exchange the Euro amount back into US funds at the exchange rate they have set, which may result in a slight variance between the Euro price quoted and the US price processed by your credit card company.
