The Surrey-the Perfect Stay

By: Grandson's Birthday Trip to NYC

Reviewed on: 27 Jun 2018

When I first began researching places to stay in New York, I was overwhelmed by the multiple choices. The Surrey was on my initial list of "possible" hotels, and when my travel advisor recommended it, the choice was made. I couldn't have been happier! My grandson and I arrived "way early", and yet, we were accommodated graciously with a temporary room. After we were all settled in our reserved room, I began to appreciate the ambiance, and how much The Surrey felt like a home. The room and hotel captured an era and history of "days gone by", and yet it had all the modern comforts, such as the Duxiana beds, which were divine! The concierge staff was exemplary, and working with them was very comfortable. They truly made us feel like appreciated guests, and they recognized our unique needs. I was sad to leave, and have already begun planning a "next trip" to The Surrey and New York.

Nice location but some staffs were snooty

We stayed at The Surrey for 4 nights. The location is very good if you like to visit the museums. Also, it is right next to Central Park. The area is quieter and less crowded compared with time square. However, some front desk, bell desk and restaurant staffs were snooty. We stayed at Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental before, we were treated a lot better. Perhaps it is typical for NYC. If people pay more than $550/night, I would think it is ok to expect Four Seasons level of customer services even though this is a boutique hotel. The food at the hotel restaurant was very good. However, we were 5 mins late for the hotel breakfast (until 10:30am) one morning (breakfast was included in our package), we were told to get food somewhere else because lunch will not be available until 11:00am. They did not even try to get us a cup of OJ or a pastry. It was understandable but a bit disappointed that they did not try to find a way to accommodate us.

The Surrey hotel is a lovely hotel in a wonderful location. The rooms were well appointed, location was quiet, but central, and staff was very friendly. The Virtuoso amenities and upgrade upon arrival were a real treat. Hotel bar, Pleiades, was great as well as Cafe Boulud.
