Sustainability
Our Commitment
Sustainability has been critically important to the Royal Hawaiian since its opening in 1927. The hotel sits on grounds previously owned by Hawaiian royalty such as King Kamehameha the First and Bernice Pauahi Bishop, and is home to over 40 species of plants, many of them native.
We are proud to be a leader of sustainability in Waikiki, having been recognized with awards such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold, an Energy Star certification, and a State of Hawaii Green Business Program Award.
Our Solar Thermal Systems positioned on the roof of our Mailani Tower help reduce our fuel consumption by 85%, reducing our carbon footprint significantly. We are also proud to be a participant in Project Reef, offering guests complimentary reef-safe sunscreen to help preserve the ocean's fragile ecosystem.
