Decent hotel in Kyoto, but not certain I'd repeat

A qualified positive recommendation. Gion Matsuri was in full swing and quite difficult to book rooms in Kyoto. We chose the Hyatt as it seemed to get good reviews and was large enough to still have availability. Rooms are clean and have lots of wood finishes and local textiles. Downside: rooms are a bit small, walls are thin, breakfast buffet uninspiring and food quality quite average, level of service lacking compared to similarly priced hotels in Tyoko (for example). If you are looking for a clean, safe and very western-type hotel, this will fit. Much better than your average hotel. A bit expensive for the product being offered.

Excellent stay

We had a marvelous three night stay, enhanced by booking through a great agent (Ben Price) at Virtuoso. The added amenities made us feel like VIP's although we have no elite status with Hyatt. They do a very nice breakfast with all the usual variety. The breads and juices were particularly good. We ended up eating two dinners at the Italian restaurant. It was excellent. The quality was exceptional, the service typically Japanese and the price extremely reasonable for a restaurant in a high end hotel in Japan. (About the only drawback to the hotel is the dearth of dining choices nearby.) The hotel is beautiful in a very understated way. I had a massage at the spa, which had flawless amenities and service. We were not able to get a room upgrade as the hotel was sold out and they have limited larger rooms. Not to worry, the basic room is excellent and still roomy by Japanese standards. The location is fine for sightseeing with a tourist bus stop just outside.

We had a nice big room on the 5th floor of the Hyatt Regency. We appreciate our room being ready a bit earlier due to the heat. Dinner at the Italian restaurant was very nice. Breakfast was standard western. A good choice for a 5 star hotel in Kyoto.
