Caneel Bay Resort

Caneel Bay Resort is a low-key resort on pristine St. John. Surrounded by some of the Caribbean's most protected forests and white-sand beaches, the resort woos guests from their first steps onto the island. Modern distractions are kept to a minimum as you relax in your charming accommodations, which incorporate the wood and stone of the island and a color palette of blues and greens that complements the natural environment. You're met with a diversity of flora and fauna and a peace and quiet that sets the tone for your "disconnect" from a harried lifestyle. Don't miss the elegant Turtle Bay Estate House.

Hotel Tip

Make at least one reservation at Zozo's, Caneel’s signature restaurant. It is absolutely fantastic and provides amazing views at sunset. –Jeannine Bottorff Hamilton, Connecticut

Caneel is Paradise

We have visited Caneel twice (2007 and 2014), and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the resort and our experience. The location is perfect. The service and food are all wonderful. There are no frills at Caneel, but once you get there you realize that you don't need anything extra. The beaches are beautiful and the surroundings are so relaxing. Caneel is truly paradise. I hope that my husband and I can make a trip back one day. I can't say I didn't cry when we got on the boat to leave.

Caneel Never Gets Old

My wife and I recently went to Caneel Bay with our teenage daughters to celebrate our 25th anniversary. It was our fourth time to visit, our first being on our honeymoon in 1989. The resort hasn't aged at all. If anything, it has gotten better. Given that Caneel has seven separate beaches, you never feel crowded. We loved staying in ocean front rooms at Cottage Point. The view is amazing, and you have plenty of privacy as there is nothing separating your patio/balcony from the ocean. The food is excellent, particularly at Zozo's which is housed in the ruins of a 17th century sugar mill. We are looking forward to many happy returns.

Wonderful hotel. Grounds are beautiful, the hotel feels empty although was full. Peaceful and natural. Wonderful beaches with different options. ZOZO's is by far the best food on the property but recommend making reservations before leaving for the trip. Can't wait to go back

Great beaches, snorkelling and food

Our first time staying at Caneel Bay but we will be back. Great beaches - we would go to 2-3 a day - just making our way to each one. Different snorkeling and feel for each. All the restaurants were great on site and Zozo's was especially wonderful, even though not considered part of Caneel. The Concierge were very helpful and friendly. Rooms are private, spacious and comfortable. Go for Oceaview or Beachfront - it's worth it.

Great "old school" resort

Caneel Bay is an awesome place. Our room was on an essentially private beach and we could hear the gentle waves hitting the sound not far from our room. We had great wifi. Thankfully no TVs or phones in the room. This place is not flashy but is a wonderful place to spend time. We will be back!

Favorite family vacation

This was our second Christmas at Caneel Bay and we enjoyed it as much as the first time. We had an ocean view room and a garden room. As you can imagine, the ocean view room was more spacious and the view was great, but the garden rooms are perfectly fine--especially for our teenagers. We love having everything on site--a variety of beaches, snorkeling, kayaks, restaurants, charters, etc. And the transfer from airport to resort ferry is seamless. The grounds are spectacular, but the staff is what makes Caneel so special. They are, to a person, friendly and accommodating. Christmas Eve dinner when Santa comes is lots of fun! Can't wait to go back.

Beautiful resort! Great location with plenty of beach activities. Rooms were fine. Food was okay also. Very expensive food prices. Service was slow at bars to get drinks.

Our 9th stay at Caneel bay was as always, a visit and stay in paradise. The rooms are terrific, the beaches clean and quiet, the service everywhere beyond compare, and the resort is very relaxed. If I had to choose one place in the Caribbean to go, this would be the place.

We loved Caneel Bay! Beautiful, quiet, cozy beach and bungalow. Loved the donkeys that strolled by daily. Took hikes every morning and saw gorgeous views. The property is expansive but walkable. If you don't feel like walking though there are shuttles to drive you. We had easy access to open air taxis to take us into town. I do wish Caneel Bay had a designated way to call a taxi to get back to the resort though. Definitely would recommend to others looking for a relaxing beach getaway.

Lovely but a little tired

We very much enjoyed our time at Caneel Bay. The property is lovely, the staff is courteous and helpful, the beaches, especially Scott Beach, are exquisite. We did think the room itself (#39) was a little tired. When one is paying $700 per day for lodging, one does not expect missing tiles in the shower, rot at the base of the doorframe in the bathroom, bureau drawers that stick, etc. Maintenance could be improved.

Our stay at Caneel Bay was wonderful! The lovely grounds and beaches of the resort, the activities available, and the good food were all perfect. It's location so near Cruz Bay was especially nice. WE also were pleased at the ease in which we could get shuttles within the resort, and taxis out of the resort. Our one puzzlement was the inconsistency of the staff. Some were very nice, while others seemed very indifferent to our needs. We don't need to be pandered to, but when paying that much money, one would hope that staff would make a point to at least pretend that they wanted to be attentive to our needs. We even had a rude concierge a couple of times, which was very odd. But there were also a number of warm and friendly staff, so I don't want to make it sound like all of our encounters were negative. But it was weird to be in such a nice place, yet never know what kind of treatment you were going to get. Having said that, we would go back to Caneel Bay again for sure.
