I suspect that there are better travel guides in China. We prefer guides with a more professorial/academic approach. Also, we do not like being taken to tourist sites (as in a tea house to sell us tea items) or a bad tourist restaurant.

the arranged transport at sydney airport a debacle, hotel in auckland did not have rooms ready - a room rate of $300/night steep when check in is 3 pm you don't get in until 4 pm and check out is 9 or 10 am - steep hourly rate. hotel shuttle service was substandard . arrangement for a rail pass poorly done confirmation numbers provided did not match those for the rail provider

The trip was wonderful. Every accommodation was excellent except for the hotel in Cairns. The public areas were very nice and the food was good but the room left a lot to be desired. All in all though the trip was well worth it.

My wife and I just completed an 11 week trip in Australia and New Zealand hat had two cruises and two fly/drive segments. Swain provided ; all transfers between the airports and the cruise ships, three car rentals, lodging in 16 different cities as well as small group tours in most cities that we visited. We only experienced a couple of "hiccups" which is amazing considering the number of arrangements that were made on our behalf. When I did have a problem, it was resolved quickly after making 1 phone call. We had requested that our lodging accommodations would be in high end, small boutique hotels or B&B's. The quality of our accommodations was excellent. Between Jodi Fox, our travel advisor and Swain, they "nailed it!". With only one exception, we loved our accommodations. We had many, many small group tours that ended up being a private tour. The quality of the vehicles and the professionalism of the drivers/tour guides was also excellent. They did a great job.

Having done most of our work through Cindy Goldberger she did most of the interaction with Swain in the beginning. They provided valuable LOCAL feedback which proved critical to the enjoyment of our trip. They had activities that I could not believe that we would ever get to try, it was such a unique itinerary. Once we had everything the way we wanted it Swain sent over the travel documents which great and organized, just the way I was so I combined my documents with theirs and didn't miss a beat. Upon arrival they had a car service ready for us and our honeymoon began. It was such an easy experience after everything was booked we didn't have to worry which increased the enjoyment 100 times!

Every tour that was arranged by Swain was met with friendly smiles and professional service! We always were amazed at the knowledge and attention to our needs at every moment of our tour. Everyone at Swain Destinations did a great job in helping us plan our Honeymoon! We loved the little details like the Champagne bottles and desserts they had for us at each hotel we stayed. At the airports they would pick us up with a sign with our names and Swain destinations so we felt special. All the tours we went to in Australia were awesome and we could not have asked for a better Honeymoon. My wife Erika and I highly recommend using Swain Destinations for your next vacation.

All arrangements went off without a hitch, from the car rentals to transfers to pickup of cars at a new location, the cars were always waiting and the pickups and drop offs were fast. The hotels/B&B's were all outstanding, Swain always picked the best places to stay, the coupons for the stays worked well with no issues. The tours/trips were all outstanding, the coupons worked well with no issues. All airline flights also went off without a hitch. Our only issue, its a small one, would be that we never saw or met a Swain representative, we though we were supposed to meet a rep when we arrived. The way the arrangements were a rep was not necessary, but it would have been nice to have someone there to meet us and just say hi and make sure we knew what to do initially and make sure there were know issues.

The Swain folks were my local contacts for any issues or changes to my itinerary. I requested a change in my itinerary in New Zealand, moving sailing in Auckland to a different day so that I could add a day trip to Hobbiton, and they took care of everything. It was great to have a local phone number and email to contact in case I needed anything with any part of my itinerary.

Swain Destinations coordinated the South Africa and Zimbabwe portions of our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa. Swain's representative met us in Cape Town at our hotel to discuss how well our trip was going and to check with us to see if any changes were needed. Ditto in Victoria Falls. What special service! Swain has the knowledge and expertise that resulted in our stay at 1st class accommodations throughout our trip, coordinate our ride on the luxury train between Pretoria and Cape Town, and our flights within South Africa and to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Swain is the very best tour operator for Australia and New Zealand. We had heard that before we took our trip and then we heard it during our trip and certainly experienced it to be a very true statement! The coordination of all the details for 3 weeks was amazing. Swain had drivers planned for our entire trip and without a doubt, they were all prompt, courteous, informative, safe and fun, plus they all had new beautiful cars!! I would highly recommend Swain to anyone that is planning a trip and wants to be assured that every detail will be handled. Australia was our 7th Continent to travel and explore and Swain made it a great journey.

All the arrangements, transfers and tours packaged for us by Swain staff were reliable and the services generally very good. The ability to customize our itinerary (even in country) was a new and wonderful experience. Most hotels and guides were exceptional, a few less so. Swain Destinations did a great job with our itinerary! The excursions were exactly what I wanted in my bucket list vacation! We had to call George from Swain Destinations while in Australia to make some last minute changes to our plans and he was able to make the requested changes without any problems. I also want to recommend the drivers we had to and from each airport to our hotels. They were all very friendly and super knowledgeable about the area. We felt comfortable asking them for recommendations for things to do while in each city. Great experience!

Our trip to Japan had some rough edges. The initial arrangements in our proposed itinerary were incomplete regarding a number of important details (e.g., who would meet us, what type of transport would be used), subsequently clarified. The descriptions used for events and services in our itinerary were sometimes unclear, ambiguous or incomplete, also subsequently clarified but with difficulty. Once in Japan, the private guide arranged in Kyoto for 1-1/2 days was less than satisfactory in terms of her job skills. Finally, the Ritz-Carolton Kyoto provided some of the poorest dining room service we've encountered in a long time - very young staff, not well trained, although well-intended. We were left with the impression that both in terms of office organization in the US and on-the-ground experience in Japan that our group was not well served by Swain, relative to the prices we were paying.

We had an excellent trip arranged by Swain Destinations for our land portion of an Australian/New Zealand vacation. Swain arranged our internal flights, tours and lodging. We gave them specific input as to where we wanted to go and many of the things we wanted to do and they put together an itinerary that was very good for us. We had no problems with any of the transfers (everyone arrived on time or ahead of time to transfer us from hotel to airport to cruise ship, etc.) and the lodging they chose for us was excellent. Overall, this was a stellar vacation itinerary!

All the details were taken care of from hotel reservations, to air and train bookings, to great daily itineraries. No miscues on the ground through the whole trip except for the rainy weather in Hakone (delayed one boat tour and hid Mt Fuji). Professional bilingual guides (had 2 different guides, 3 days each). Private van transportation made the touring very efficient and less taxing on the body and feet. Seemless pickups and drop offs made for worry free travel which is what you want when you are on vacation. Great private origami lesson for the family made for great bonding. No complaints, good value for the wrap around service.

Swain was top notch. Every employee we came in contact with was personable and pleasant. In particular, our driver/tour guide, Gary, for the half day tour of Cape Town and the day drive to the Cape of Good Hope was fantastic. His knowledge of the plant/animal life, geography, and history of the City / Country was immense. There was no question Gary couldn't answer, and he always had interesting facts/trivia to share. Gary even made us a romantic lunch reservation on the bay so we could enjoy some alone time and whale watch. Would recommend to anyone traveling to South Africa!

Our trip was great! We saw the places we requested within the time frame that we had. In planning the trip it was always unclear to me whether we were part of a group tour, or whether the tour was created just for us. It turned out the tour was created just for us. The tour price was never broken down by transportation, hotel, etc. That would have been nice. But then on the other hand, it is probably best not to know the details of how much everything costs. One can enjoy the trip more if one isn't aware of the individual cost of everything.

Our experience with Swain Destinations was phenomenal. They were incredibly receptive to all of our requests. They helped to put together a 17 day itinerary for our travels to New Zealand and Australia. There were certain things we requested to do on our trip but we also let them use their judgement to suggest excursions and places to stay. We had booked our excursions through Swain. We were overall very pleased with the guides and tours we took as we were booking several. Some tours were better experiences than others so once Swain has given the information on the tour company it would be worth a quick glance at their website to make sure your expectations meet the experiences.
We had a little bit of time miscommunication with one of our tours (one-on-one guided fishing) and that was discouraging. So my only feedback is to double and triple check the confirmed times at least 2 days before directly with the tour operator.

The places we stayed were amazing! Wharekauhau was over the top wonderful. The service here was amazing. Nicholas, Grant, Matt and Shannon were especially memorable. We felt very pampered here. Treetops was also amazing. Another place with impeccable service. We loved everything about this place. Cape Kidnappers was also amazing and we had a great day of golf. Blanket Bay was unbelievably beautiful and especially memorable. And of course Southern Ocean Lodge in Kangaroo Island made me feel like I was in a James Bond Movie. Over the top wonderful. These are truly my 5 favorite places I have ever been in the world. I loved having pre dinner drinks and dinner included and it was fun getting to know others at the pre dinner drinks. The food was amazing everywhere. The service was the best at all of the places. Better than anywhere else we have stayed anywhere in the world. I would recommend the same trip to anyone.

Their overall proposal for our trip was adhered to in broad strokes, but important details were changed without our permission & to our disappointment. When we contacted them directly, during the trip, they responded promptly. We felt like we were promised, & paid for, one description of our trip & we received a lesser version - leaving us wondering about what happened to the money we paid, when we received less. As there were no itemized expenses ever presented, it was easy for them to "shortchange" us. Their site recommendations were, in general, wonderful, but one or two of their guides were not up to the Virtuoso level (& one was beyond awesome!), nor were some of the "experiences" they booked. They dropped the ball on a fairly routine train trip, causing an unnecessary interruption, requiring additional ticket purchase & on two occasions asked their guides to handle issues that were strictly administrative (causing confusion for guide & traveler). Wish there'd been fewer snags

Swain arranges the best guides, tours, and services. The guides know how to manage the attractions so you navigate around the crowds and don't miss the highlights. If it weren't for our guide at Franz Joseph, we wouldn't have made it on the glacier--she stayed on top of the rescheduling when weather cancelled early helicopter flights. Suggestions: please provide a summary itinerary with bulleted list of activities and arrangements for each. (I sketch out a calendar on a legal piece of paper so I can see the trip on one page.) The paragraphs of description are helpful but to communicate with all the members of the group it would be easier to have something more condensed. Also, the binder is compact but wasteful, not recycleable.

Swain worked with my travel agent in Arizona to provide an itinerary that met all our requirements. Outstanding. The private tours were the highlight of our trip. We loved looking for kangaroos and koalas in the wild. Absolutely the best part of our trip. The visit to Phillip Island, the tour of the koala preserve and finally the penguin march were all quite fun. We were not as enthusiastic about the Great Ocean Road. I think it was oversold as being spectacular and the visit to the Twelve Apostles was too crowded. That should have been visited first thing, especially when the light would have been better.

We used them before and were very satisfied with them. This time we had several disappointments with them because the equipment their operators used was old and and not comfortable. Also had a bad experience with our driver when we got to Sidney to take us to our hotel. Our plane was about 30 minutes late and it takes a long time to go through customs coming into Australia and the driver was very upset that we were late because he had another group he had to go meet and was just trying to hurry us along and did not even try to help us with our luggage at all, not even to put them into the van. His English was very poor, but he had “ Hurry Up, Hurry Up “ well down pat.

Our experience with Swain Destinations was Outstanding! We used Swain for our recent adventure to Australia and Tasmania. The personalized hardcopy itinerary was a perfect reference with everything in one place; accommodation descriptions, pick up times and locations, tour expectations, flight information, and contact information. That was just the beginning. Our personal drivers were always on time, very knowledgeable, and went the "extra mile" to make our trip perfect. The accomodations were simply awesome and the personalized service was tremendous. Our personalized tour guides were the best; extremely knowledgeable, fun to be with, had special access, and they always looked after our needs. My partner and I had an exceptional experience with Swain destinations. We planned this trip on short notice, and with our travel agent Russell Glasheen, Swain designed the perfect itinerary for us. Everything ran to perfection! The transfers were always timely and professional, the tours were excellent in size and variety, and the hotels were superb. Swain even contacted us on a few occasions during the trip to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. This was the best experience I have had with a travel company, and hope to book with Swain again in the future. I highly recommend them.

We had a very specific itinerary all written out for us. Everything went exactly as planned until we hit some bad weather in New Zealand. We called Swain and within a couple of hours we had alternate reservations & they even got us a refund on the cancellation created by the bad weather.
I had trouble calling as we were in a "remote" area so I emailed - and got a response immediately. Anne and George were both wonderful - and I can't imagine what would have happened if we hadn't used a travel agent and this had happened. I would highly recommend them to anyone. They made it a great trip!

We were very pleased with Swain's in-depth knowledge of both countries and attention to detail in helping to coordinate the different components of our trip. Excellent. Swain was extreemly flexible with our family, as we had to re-scehudle this trip on 3 separate occasions, and was required to augument overall 1 week prior to our departure as some members of our party tested positive for COVID and were required to stay back in the states.
Swain's in-country resources were very helpful.
My only recommendation is that our trip was originally planned for the month of June. Various excursions were planned assuming that season. While we were able to reschuelde for December, some of those activities were not practical to have planned for that time of the year (december) and so we would have appreciated some advance consideration to that. That said, while our whale watching tour was cancelled b/c it was out of season, the in-country Swain rep was AMAZING in scheudling a new tour day that was fantastic!

Swain Destinations, in conjuction with Lestina Trainor, did a fantastic job planning our trip and guiding us through our travels while abroad. I was particularly impressed and grateful for the extra, unsolicited, offer to "meet and greet" our flight after an unfortunate travel delay that resulted in an unanticipated overnight in Johannesburg. Swain was proactive in meeting us, guiding us through unanticipated last minute Covid change requirements and rebooking arrangements. It was great in the moment service and the individuals who pulled it off on our behalf were true professionals and heroes. Multiple on site Swain agents gave us their mobile phone numbers and were available in a surprisingly difficult and unanticipated circumstance. It made all the difference in the world!

This is the second time Vivian has used Swain for local travel arrangements; first time in Melbourne Australia and now in South Africa and Botswana. Each experience has been fabulous. We were particularly impressed with the Africa trip. The logistics of getting to 4 different safari camps in 2 different countries were quite complex and they occurred without any problems. The choice of the Cape Grace Hotel in Cape Town was wonderful. The safari camps were top notch, culminating in MalaMala, the best of the best. I also appreciated their checking in via email several times during the trip. That small gesture was very reassuring that someone was there to help if needed. I would certainly be happy if Vivian used Swain again and would highly recommend their services to my friends.

The specific activities that Swain had lined up for me were excellent. Drivers, tour leaders, and specific events were very professional and high-quality. Mostly worked with Julie who in turn coordinated our trip plan with Swain. Swain was the institutional and local knowledge group so coordination with Julie and in turn communication to us worked seamlessly. They for the most part found accommodations that fit our price range and itinerary during a busy summer vacation time in NZ.

This was a 50/50 experience. Great guides and excursions in Sydney, Melbourne and Cairns. Disappointed with Harbor cruise and communication about transportation in Cairns. Did not seem to be on top of it across the board.

Always there when we needed. Quick responses. Lovely tour guides - knowledgeable and nice personalities. ( with one exception).
