Sustainability
Our Commitment
Rocky Mountaineer’s commitment to sustainability focuses on protecting the areas we travel through, using resources wisely as we operate our business, and supporting our local communities. We partner with and support organizations that protect nature and wildlife, honour local culture, and inspire action to deliver meaningful impact in our communities. Lonely Planet unveiled its Best in Travel Picks for 2021 and we are proud to share that Rocky Mountaineer won the Best Sustainable Train Journey Category.
For many years, we have focused on decreasing our impact on the environment. While onboard, guests dine on reusable tableware, which is washed and disinfected on the train. In 2019, we added 10 new GoldLeaf rail cars to our fleet, which have a number of energy efficient enhancements, including dishwashers that use 20% less water than previous models. In addition, we plant a tree with Trees Canada to honour the employment anniversary of each team member. More than 13,500 trees have been planted in Canada since 2008.
In 2020, we set two ambitious goals to further decrease our impact on the environment: to divert 90% of waste from landfill by 2023 and to reduce carbon emissions across our operations for the long term. As part of these goals, we are supporting research that is underway to explore the feasibility of alternative fuel sources for the train, which is an exciting project for the future.
